Coaching change: McCoy to Denver, Scherer likely in

Ripscherer200pBLOG

Turns out Carolina assistant coach Mike McCoy indeed is leaving to become Denver’s new offensive coordinator, and the Panthers appear set to hire his replacement.

Rip Scherer, Cleveland’s assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach under recently-fired Romeo Crenel, was in Charlotte for an interview Saturday and was expected to land the job.

Scherer, 56, formerly worked with Carolina offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson when Davison was on the Browns’ staff.

Scherer helped Cleveland quarterback Derek Anderson to a breakout season in 2007, but Anderson struggled this season and eventually was replaced in the lineup by Brady Quinn.

Scherer is said to be an oustanding quarterbacks' tutor and to have been well-liked by Anderson and Quinn.

Scherer joined the Browns in 2005 after spending 30 years in college football, including serving as head coach at James Madison (1991-94) and Memphis (1995-200). He was with Memphis before the school recruited Carolina running back DeAngelo Williams.

McCoy, 36, spent nine seasons with the Panthers, most recently as passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He was a finalist for the offensive coordinator position in 2007 before Davidson got the job.

Now, McCoy will coordinator the offense for new Broncos coach Josh McDaniels, who was hired to replace Mike Shanahan.

Hum....does this mean that Derek Anderson is not too far behind? Looks like Cleveland is moving on to Quinn.

The defensive cord. needs to go. Since they don't have the balls to fire Fox! I like what Jeff Davidson has done, especially with the zone run blocking scheme! Its the QB with no poise and noodle arm that spoils it all.

i love to see panthers play but maybe it is time for biil cowers and for sure anew quarterback.

I think there is a good situation here with Cleveland. At the end of the day Peppers can only make his wishes known that he wants to play in a 3-4, it isn't a guarantee. I say trade Pep to Cleveland for a 1st rounder and Derek Anderson. Win-win situation. Panthers can get back in the first round to draft a young DE, get a young, proven QB like Foxy loves, and ship Pep outside of the NFC.

tonytiger - Panther fans screaming for Fox to be fired and Bill Cowher to be hired.here is some History for you.. Cowher won (1) Superbowl in '15' years.. he was terrible several years, Steeler Fans called for him to be fired after he went 7-9 and 6-10 in 1998 & 1999.. In 2000 he went 9-7 and missed the playoff's again, by now the fans were screaming for Cowher to be fired even more.. Rooney stuck with his man, even though in 2003 he went 6-10.. His loyality was finally paid off with a 2006 SuperBowl victory. The next year (2006) he went 8-8, and the fans started up again,, Cowher retired at the end of the 2006 regular season..

Guys have you already forgotten about Matt Moore? ok he didn't look outstanding in the preseason but before we go blowing money in FA on a QB doesn't he deserve a shot to show the faith the Coaching staff and players have in him is well placed or not?

Think maybe they'll go after Derek Anderson now that Scherer is gonna be the new QB coach. I think he's gonna be a free agent....... I've never seen Anderson play, but remember him having a pretty good year a couple of seasons ago.
Has anyone seen him play? If so, do you think he'd be an upgrade?
Also I'd still like to keep Jake at a reduced salary, and as the #2 QB.

There's goes another stupid Cowher plea. What is wrong with you people? Does he walk on water or something? Do you honestly think that he'll come in here and takes us instantly to multible SB's? No he won't.
He retired for a reason and has not shown any desire to coach again.
Besides, if you're gonna mention the man's name atleast spell it right. Idiot.

P.S. Good post Mountaineerdynasty. Wish it could be posted every time some so-called Panthers fan mentions Cowhers name.

So, Josh McDaniels looked around for a co-ordinator and he saw mike McCoy who was the passing co-ordinator of the Panthers who hardly threw all year and whose QB threw 5 INTs in a playoff loss..I mean what is he thinking?..well, then again, maybe the problem is Delhomo and now McCoy

For all of you calling for Cowher to come coach, did you not see him say on CBS that he does not plan to coach in 2009. Get off it already.

All these comments are good we all agree something needs to happen in the QB section my opinion Delhomme must go and we need to get stronger in the secondary.

I think julius pepper & Derek Anderson trade would be a dumb trade for the panthers. Derek Anderson is a 10 game wonder he fell apart bad throws, bad reads.Don't fire fox,FIRE THE QB.

Panthers need to keep Fox as head coach but need to put new life into their defense. A new defensive coordinator really seems to make sense.
As for Peppers, put a franchise tag on him and trade him. The money he would cost to keep him would be better spent to retool the defense.

I like Scherer as the QB coach.

Cut McCown get Anderson not saying he's going to start but he could be good in Carolina and at least be a open QB competition

And to the people who want Bill Cowher, um why? Cowher is one of the most over-rated coachs he is not that good

I am fine with Foxy as current head coach though Trgovac should go and it looks like he most likely will (i pray)

Also I wasnt thrilled with McCoy as our "passing cordinater" we had a lot of weapons not used well in the passing game.

Scherer + Davidson = Our TE's are going to have a big year next year

Please just fire Trgovac so awful..

Posted by: Matt Anderson | Jan 18, 2009 11:50:56 AM

the broncos just hired a guy we should have fired.

Posted by: angry psl owner | Jan 18, 2009 11:57:46 AM

Everyone keeps yelling to fire Trgovac, but it's John Fox's scheme that he's deploying week in and week out. WAKE UP PEOPLE! The defense is never going to change under Fox's watch! McCoy did the best he could with Delhomme. He's upgraded a lot by getting a QB like Cutler to work with now. Some of you look at the I.P. (identifiable problem) too much instead of looking deeper to find the real problem. Peppers should retire a Panther regardless of what anyone says. The defense needs to be philosophically overhauled...meaning let's be more nasty and actually utilize the talent that we have instead of playing this soft zone crap. I say Fox has one more year and if he doesn't get it done then it's time to call Cowher. Sports News Radio just said yesterday that the reason Cowher said he wasn't coaching this year is because the one job he covets isn't available. They went on to say that he covets the Carolina Panthers job. Well, a lot of fans covet you too Mr. Cowher!

look people Fox isnt going anywhere ok...he is one of the best coaches around..and Jake isnt going anywhere either...so get that out of your heads..Jake is the best QB today in my book..

trade peppers and deLlame, fire the DC get a first and second pick for peppers another pick for JAKE and rebuild the"O" around smity, and the running game, the "D" around the linebackers, two safeties, and move on Peppers is good but didnt make enough plays, thanks for the good years but there are some good de coming out of college from LSU, TEXAS,ETC, oh yeah a 3-4 would be a good fit b/c we have the linebackers and they would thrive in that, remember don capers and that guy name Green

Posted by: GENE | Jan 18, 2009 2:48:54 PM

The defense is not nasty enough, corners dont worry anyone, wide outs running free makes for lots of 1st downs! Special teams? Where are they? When was the last fake fieldgoal? All those tree n outs! that already makes our Panthers not too scary for other teams, did i mention Steve Smith? get him the ball 8-15 times a game before he leaves, 31 other teams would take him! Come on Panthers no more prevent defense, it doesnt work here...

Posted by: R.Perez | Jan 18, 2009 4:36:39 PM

Ok Jacob..you have to get rid of that book where you have Jake as the top QB...its just not worth reading..no top QB throws 5 INTs..those are some horrible choices by an avg QB..we need to give him some competition in training camp..he is too relaxed..knows Fox wont change him even when he throws 5 picks..

Posted by: Pantherzzz | Jan 18, 2009 4:52:45 PM

they need to get rid of john fox period ! and also that washed up QUARTERBACK JAKE DELHOMME. you don't get your team to the playoffs and then choke! and that's what happen. we should have won that game period !!!!! also get rid of ken lucas he is not what this team needs. we need to go after a QB in the upcoming draft. and build up our defense to were we will give in to teams like the cardinals. and last the issue with peppers if he wants to go let him go! because john fox will not change to a 3 4 defense if he would then maybe peppers will stay maybe!!!!!!

i would really like to see our carolina panthers be the next superbowl champs real soon. i have been a big fan since day 1 1995 and i believe they can do it with the right peaple in place. staff, coaches, trainers what ever it takes to make that happen. go panthers........

Posted by: robert | Jan 18, 2009 7:12:19 PM

We here in Cleveland will miss Rip Scherer.
Cleveland's loss will be the Panthers gain.

Posted by: Pat McGervey | Jan 18, 2009 7:23:00 PM

Jake Delhome needs to leave. So does John Fox. I hope he doesn't end up like Joe Zorn and the redskins. Zorn had 27 seasons with the redskins. McCown would be better as the quarterback or maybe even a draft pick would be better
