Fox's Sunday news conference
Here's the transcript from coach John Fox's season-ending news conference Sunday:
Q. What did you tell the team this morning?
"We had a great season and a bad game. Unfortunately it occurred when it did. We walk out of here with our heads held high. All in all, it was a heck of a season with a lot of good things. It's a good core of players to move ahead with. It's a very-high character team."
Q. Did you talk to Jake?
"Yes. He had a bad game. He didn't have a bad season. He's not a bad quarterback. It happens."
Q. Do you expect he'll be made a scapegoat for the loss?
"I suspect, like any loss, we all become scapegoats, whatever you guys choose. That's part of it. We should move forward."
Q. What did you see from the interceptions?
"Having not seen the tape yet, I can't really speak to that. Probably the sack-fumble was the bigger play than any of the interceptions. That gave them life. We started great, even on the kickoff that went out of bounds early. We knocked them back out of field-goal range. The sack-fumble gave them the lead 14-7 on the road and it snowballed from there."
Q. Why did you play a zone defense in the first half?
"You've got a heckuva player (Larry Fitzgerald) who caught six balls, two of them he wasn't even covered on. They threw to him 20 some times. I don't think that's why we lost the game. We were fortunate we they didn't score more than 33. You don't give the ball back to the third-ranked team in the NFL five times."
Q. Did you consider dedicating one defender to Fitzgerald?
"We had one by designated. We always had a defensive player on him, sometimes two."
Q. Did you consider shadowing him the whole game?
"No, we haven't done that all season and we didn't do it in the first game."
Q. Did Anquan Boldin's absence factor in how you played defense?
"No."
Q. Julius Peppers is very noncommittal about coming back, do you believe he will?
"Julius, who I've got utmost respect for, is a private person. He's a different person than other people. It's a process. He's been fairly private with the process. I'll leave it at that. I've got no complaints with Julius, no questions about his commitment. It's the business part of it. He did a great job of focusing on football this year and not letting anybody from outside make it a distraction. I've got a great deal of respect for that."
Q. What kind of priority is it to keep him here?
"I'd say it's important. Most people would see that as being important, just like keeping Jordan (Gross) here and all our core players here. I can't predict the future. I'd be at the racetrack if I could."
Q. If you can't re-sign him, would you franchise him?
"You're asking me questions a day after the season's over. They're good questions, but again, it's a process. Right now, I'm look forward to having next week off."
Q. Do you feel like you know where he stands?
"I've had conversations with him. I tend to keep that private. Those things are between me and Julius."
Q. How important is this situation, knowing the decisions you need to make between now and March 1?
"It's still early. So early I can't believe it. We both know how we feel about him and we know how he feels about us. It's the business part of it and I hope it works out."
Q. If Julius prefers not to be here, would you work with him or put the franchise tag on him?
"Again, that's hypothetical and I don't do good with hypotheticals. We'll march forward. Things change."
Q. What will you do in the postseason?
"We'll take next week off...then go to the Senior Bowl. Our staff has been working on personnel all year. We'll go into the offseason process and evaluate our football team. We'll look at things we can improve. We don't share those things outwardly."
Q. Will you make any changes to your staff?
"I don't predict anything. It's too early to predict or decide on anything."
Q. What's it like to be on top of the world, then 24 hours later have it all turned around?
"Thankfully, I've done it a lot. You've got to have that high before you get to the disappointment. There's only one happy team. There will be two sad teams today. Somebody has to lose. At the end of it all, there's only one truly happy person. He's the guy holding that Lombardi Trophy. That's the race we're in and what we're all fighting for. Unfortunately, only one gets it."
Q. Any injuries to talk about?
"Not too many things that I'd want to discuss publicly."
Q. What happened to Landon Johnson?
"He spent the night in hospital. No breaks. No torn tendons. Just a couple of muscle pulls in his hip and groin. It's something he should recover from."
Q. What's it like knowing you'll never coach this same team again?
"It's like this every year. In '03 and '05 and '93 and '89. There are a lot of fun players to be with. There are a lot of good teams that don't stay the same. Even Super Bowl winners don't stay the same. That's the landscape of the league. The neat thing about the team picture is you look back in 15 years and have a lot of great memories."
Q. Will you watch the playoff games today?
"I'm missing one now. I'll probably look at some, but not too much."

A great season down the drain due to horrible play calling and even worse quarterback play by the WORST quarterback in the division, and one of the WORST in the NFL. 15 runs for the whole game. The turnovers in the 1st half happened on either 1st or 2nd down if I remember correctly. No reason to be forcing the pass in that situation. Why not run out of the three WR sets that the Panthers ran starting in the 3rd???? But the most dumbfounding question is...Why in the hell did Fox not pull Delhomme. McCown certainly couldn't have played any worse. Its long been time to bring in another QB that will be given an opportunity to win the starting job. Fox, I feel, for the most part is a solid coach but he has a blind loyalty to Delhomme as does Hurney. I understand that the Panthers value loyalty, character, and class and that makes me proud, but not when it hurts the goal of the team....winning the Super Bowl. Its time to cut ties with Delhomme. He is due to count 11 million against the cap next season. 11 million! Either through the draft or free agency the Panthers have got to upgrade the QB position if they want any chance of winning in the playoffs.

I agree with Thomas. It is time to put the QB role up for competition. Jake's passion is OK but his unpredictable play is killing us - how many fans said "here we go again" last night on Jake's first interception - that should tell you something.

The reason Jake was NOT benched was because Fox wanted him to finish what he started. At the very least, he deserved that, after the amazing season we had UP to the game last night.
I'm not a Jake advocator by any means, but even with all of the issues Jake had, this game was his to finish whether we won or lost big. Unfortunately, it didn't go our way.
With that said though, I believe Jake does need some competition next season at QB. Sure many loyal Jake fans will call me fairweather, but I tell what the facts present. Jake is serviceable, at best. He had a magical season in '03 and a decent one in '05, but they surely weren't due to his precision or mechanics.
One person said it best....he's a gunslinger. You take major risks with Jake, win or lose. We lost big with his risks last night, and looking at this film will give every NFL team a leverage over us should Jake still be at helm next year. Without an accurate QB who can go to several receivers on the field, every NFL team will play us next season like the Cardinals did last night. Just stack 8 up front to shut down the run and force Jake to throw the ball.
If you all didn't see last night's game, go look at how Jake started panicking the moment he realized Smitty was covered. He hesitated, many times too long, and even tried to force it to Smitty, which resulted in picks.
A good QB should be able to dissect the defense, and if the intended man isn't open to be able to see the other WRs on the field to see if there's an opportunity. If not, you throw the ball away and live for the next play. Jake couldn't do that, and NEVER has done that. He'd rather force the issue than try to live for another play. All he had to do was run for a few yards, and if no one is open still, throw the ball out of bounds.
I counted at least 20 points that were just given to the 'Cards from Jake's mistakes. 2 TDs and 2 FGs off of those 6 turnovers. Say it as you want, but if Jake played mediocre, at least, and we actually explored the running game that we're known to have done well in, this game would have been down to the wire.
Good job to Arizona for panicking the Panthers coaching staff and Jake. Either way, with Jake at the helms, we'll make the playoffs but not go anywhere far. This year was the BEST year we could have made it all the way. Now, it's wasted and gone. At least Jake deserves credit for getting us this far and accepting responsibility. Now, he needs to understand his skills just can't keep up with the rest of the new QBs like Matt Ryan, Matt Cassell, Brady, the Mannings, P. Rivers, and D. Brees. There are too many more precise QBs in the NFL today that Jake will never be considered a good or elite QB in this league. Time for the organization to understand that.

Jake, lucus, and peppers has to go....we are paying these guys toooo much for them to do nothing, I feel sorry for steve smith, he needs to go to a better team the panthers are not cutting it.
Posted by: Cedric Jacobs | Jan 11, 2009 3:14:19 PM
I agree totally, Jake needs to go. The Panthers had an excellent shot at the big game but give it up Jake let the whole team down again. He is surrounded by quality players but he is not one of them. The Panthers have a great duo in their two running backs but John Fox allowed Jake to go to the air over and over and over again. Where was the run? Worst coaached game of Fox's time in Charlotte.

I forgot about McCown!! JThomas is right he could not have played any worse than Joke, I mean Jake -who BTW I heard just got an offer from Southwest for a wanna get away commercial. Besides McCown was benched by Kurt Warner in AZ so he could have had extra motivation, and has a more lively arm than Joke anyway.
But before keep piling on Joke, what about Fox??!! They play calling was INEXCUSABLE, as a matter of fact he seems to always do the opposite to common sense, you know getting conservative at the wrong time, getting wild with a mediocre QB in a playoff game at home when you have one of the best 1-2 RB combos in the league. Time to move on, sometimes a shake up is what the team needs, remember Tony Dungy in TB, I mean he is a great coach and ultimately won an SB in Indy but his replacing enabled the Bucs to win it all with Gruden.

My only question is why did we get away from the run so early, please don't suggest that they were shutting it down as both backs avg'd over 5 yd/carry. The way to slow down a "high powered" passing offense is to keep the ball away from it, hence run the ball, ram it down their throat. There's an old saying "Dance with the one that brought 'ya", and the passing game did not get the Panthers in the playoffs.

If Turgovac and the secondary coach are not gone by next year then this Panther orgainization has no desire to be a Super Bowl contender. Yesterdays performance by the defense displayed nothing but coaching ineptitude. Yea Jake stunk it up but I'm sure he felt that if he didn't score everytime we had the ball then the game was lost. A golden opportunity is now gone. Thanks Foxy.

Pnthers need to fire Defensive coordinator. Defense need to be aggresive like eagles or Ravens. For Fitzgerald to just catch any pass thrown to him with no Panther around him and gice Quarterback so much time to throw to him is just inexcusable.
They also need to look at QB with strong arm and CB.
OC needs to come up with some good pass plays and in playoffs different plays and gadget plays as well.

Coach Fox said it all. The team picked a bad day to have a bad day. Don't forget, last year, 7-9 without Jake, this year, 12-4. Granted, Jake made the mistakes.....consistently, but you have to hand it to Arizona. Their defensive schemes bated Jake into throws sometimes, and he unfortunately bit. That one throw he made to Smitty to the right started as one-on-one coverage with no safety help, but at the snap, they reshuffled and then there were 3 around Smitty, the ball got batted around and intercepted. AZ played smart football.
I'm a little surprised that all of the blame is being thrown on Jake's shoulders. Does nobody recall how wide open Fitzgerald was all night? How did he ever get that wide open, that frequently? I believe Trgo has some questions to answer. That is one coaching position Fox should reconsider, and I hope some other team is foolish enough to pay JP 16 mil for a handful of good games....it shouldn't be us!

The mark of a champion is to win when the money's on the line. All this regular season hoopla is marginal stuff, I much rather we win when the money's on the line (playoffs). We can't win with Jake. His risk management system is out of whack for years now and our Panther ownership group and coaches continue to have blind loyalty to Jake which I cannot understand why. Let's upgrade him just like we did the O-line year over year.
Our defense is troublesome too as we don't seem to get a lot of pressure on the QB rushing 4 and we don't seem to have the sophisticated schemes that a Baltimore or Pitt bring to the table.
We have a lot of offseason work 2 do.

Jake obviously didn't play a good game. I'm shocked that on a local or national level there is not much talk about how bad our defense is. No offense can win a game if the other team scores every time they get the ball. I definitely agree with Cedric about the players leaving. I'm torn on Peppers leaving but Jake and Lucas have to get out of town. Lucas might be the worst starting corner in the league. On every play he is about 5-10 yeards away from the WR. We have a nice core of young talent but need some focus areas in the draft (QB,CB,DE,DL,WR). I wouldn't mind seeing a new defensive coordinator either. We don't blitz nearly enough and you have to fault the coaching staff for not changing that zone in the first half. Trgovac has to go.

Fox is making excuses again for his players and saying it was just a bad time to have a bad game. When did our defensive line ever put pressure on Warner like they did on Jake? Will any one of the Richardson's recognise how bad our defensive backs are and have been all year and make a decision about how do we improve the team? As stated before there are multiple needs that continue to be left alone as they have for years.

What stinks now is that the city just lost millions since the Eagles won and we would've hosted next week. How can you be so high after one possession and the doors fall off so quickly? 2 people beat us last night Larry & Jake. Unfortunate!
Posted by: Clark | Jan 11, 2009 4:21:13 PM
bring on bill cowher. he turned down numerous teams last week for a reason.
Posted by: BC | Jan 11, 2009 4:22:37 PM
Last night was proof of why Trgovac is never mentioned when a team is looking for a new head coach. It is because Trgovac is HORRIBLE as a DC, and if Fox does not fire him, then Fox needs to be fired period. Enough is enough concerning Trgovac and his ignorance.

JOKE HAS TO GO !!!!! Looks like he is scared to go past the play off's. Please get us a quarterback that will not CHOKE!!!

The Panthers will never win a Superbowl with Jake at QB. He is too emotional. There has never been an emotional QB like that to have success. You must be cool, calm, and collected, not yelling at your own teammates and running around like a 13 year old. Gunslingers like him can have good regular seasons, and a few good playoff games here and there, but when the game is on the biggest of stages, gunslingers always crumble. It's time to move on.

This game was thrown. It's that simple! A few coaches and players threw this game and were paid multi-millions by the folks in Vegas. The NFL is looking into it right now and it will be headline news next week. MARK MY WORD!

John Fox is a great guy, but cant motivate a team through the tough times. Trgovac I'm sure is a great guy, but cant motivate a defense to smack somebody in the mouth without helping them up after they do. Mr. Richardson, call Mr. Cowher. We need somebody with a mean streak.

This team has no heart, plain and simple. I saw a couple players leaving the stadium last night laughing and goofing off. They were talking about leaving for the Bahamas next week and seemed really glad to be done and able to go on vacation.

I just saw a top NFL analyst comment and he said this might be the worst defensive game plan he has ever witnessed in a game of this magnitude...EVER! Jake was really really bad but a third grader could have put together a better game plan. No excuse for it.

It's saddens me to see once again how the Panthers fair weather fans have turned on their team. How about cut the fans. You guys are so unappreciative of your team it makes me sick. Don't blame the team that all week you guys couldn't work, go to school or do your daily routine because of a playoff game. All week it was all Panthers all day. So if anyone is to blame it should be the backwoods small town mentality THE FANS have. So how about blame yourselves.

1> jake is jake hes never going to be the best qb, and hes going to hve games like that, hes a leader and a winner, and in the 4th quater hes one of the best.
2> i was more pissed at de-fense with 2 weeks to prepare, jake probaly could hit fitz with the ball
3> with super speed at lb, and you could argue the hardest hitter in football at saftey you need an attack, attack defense
4> panthers will keep both peppers and gross, they keep the core players
5> good season, piss poor ending
Posted by: tony | Jan 11, 2009 5:19:44 PM
15 rushing attempts all game says it all. Poor game plan on both sides of the ball. Thanks Foxy.
