The end zones: Paint it black

The Panthers have painted the end zones black (with the words "Carolina" and "Panthers" inscribed at each end -- at Bank of America Stadium for Saturday's game. That hasn’t happened since the team’s last home playoff game against Dallas in 2003. It happens that seldomly because the paint kills the grass. There’s the potential for just one more home game after Saturday: Panthers could host the NFC Championship Game next week if they beat the Cardinals and the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New York Giants in the other divisional playoff game this weekend.

It looks VERY cool. -- David Scott

That is what I am talking about!

Black jerseys, black endzones, fans in black...white towels? They dropped the ball on that. I wish they'd just admit it was too expensive to get black towels. Oh well. The place will STILL be bananas.

fans are to be in white this weekend...it's a WHITE out...and the panthers will be in black...i think that is cool...

Clay, the official plan is to have fans DRESS in black with the towels in white. That way, the towels stand out with all the black around (jerseys, fan dress, night, etc)

Yeah, Clay, wear black. You moron

no Clay...it's a BLACK out w/ white growl towels:

Best line so far was on f
Foxsports.com where the Panthers home field record was compared to the commercial for the new Clint Eastwood movie....."get off my lawn".

Dear Panther Nation,

Please check out my panthers songs on www.tobaccohead.com. They are free, totally clean, and high spirited. I hope you will enjoy them.

It's awesome knowing your team has a homefield advantage.

GO PANTHERS!! DOMINATE ALL THE WAY!!!

Hey SSGPat-

I don't know how many people have thought of that before, but I having been thinking for a while that black pants would be the bomb! About a year ago, or maybe in preseason, I heard someone on the team suggest it in an interview, but who knows if anything ever came of it. I do know that the NFL is very strict on uniform changes. It's not like the team could just decide on a Wednesday they wanted to wear black pants that weekend. I think there is a lengthy procedure through the league office to make such a request.

Either way, it would be cool to see. I love the black end zones, too. I also like that they only do it on rare occasions. It makes it much cooler.

Oh, a "blackout" is done by wearing black. I hope the ABC store lets me return all this liquor.

Posted by: patrick | Jan 8, 2009 3:56:51 PM

Do does this mean only black people can attend?

Or is it only white people?

I'm yellow, please advise.

I don't care if they wear black, white, teal or sequins, JUST WIN BABY!!!!!!!

GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Folks, there was a recent article that suggested Steve Smith was lobbying Jerry Richardson just to change the socks from blue to black, and Big Cat didn't even like THAT idea. Don't think we'll see the pants for a LOOOOOONG time, much less the helmets. I don't think a team has ever used an "alternate" helmet, as opposed to a retro one that goes with a specific old uniform. You'd likely only see a new helmet with a full uniform overhaul.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jan 8, 2009 4:13:49 PM

There are no rules pertaining alternate uniformas in the playoffs.

Posted by: chris | Jan 8, 2009 4:43:07 PM

There are no rules, but the home team does have first choice, and you can't introduce any new uniform without league approval.

did anyone else see the gran torino comment that cmo did about "get off my lawn"...id like to know if it was an article or on tv...would love to see it

Black pants AND black jerseys would absolutely suck. Thank god Jerry Richardson, or whomever he has making the call, has enough sense to not give in to such a lame idea.

A lot of teams nowadays, from the Seahawks to the Eagles to NC State, as well as many others, have implemented this monochromatic scheme with their uniforms. The Jacksonville Jaguars do it. They go with the all-black look, from their helmets all the way down to their cleats -- and the look is butt-effing-ugly. It looks like the players are wearing full-body leotards.

Keep the jerseys and pants different colors.

If the Panthers would come out with black pants, I would run on the field and make a few plays!

If a clothing blackout is being pushed, I sure hope they're selling black ponchos at the stadium.
