Trgovac on Peppers, staff departures

More from our interview earlier today with outgoing Panthers defensive coordinator Mike Trgovac, who today accepted a job to be Green Bay's defensive line coach:

(x) On Julius Peppers saying through his agent that he wants to continue his career elsewhere after his contract expires Feb. 26 in order to reach his full potential as a player: "I'm not going to get into the Julius issue much. Of course, you're disappointed in that. I have not spoken to Julius since then. I had a great relationship with him. I hope he feels the same way."

(x) On internet reports that Panthers assistant coaches were perturbed that contract extension offers were late arriving, leading to the departure of Trgovac and three other defensive assistants: "I don't speak for other people, but that had nothing to do with me. That wasn't the case for me. I truly had seven good years with John (Fox) and I appreciate everything he and (general manager) Marty Hurney did for me.

"What this thing looks like is not really what it is with everybody on the defensive side of the ball going to other places. I know in my case, it was for myself I did this. It was nothing to do with John. This was not something that, from my perspective, had anything to do with contracts ..."

Good Riddance, maybe now the "handcuffs" will be taken off the defense and we can unleash the full potential we have on the defensive side of the ball.

Just like I had sad before on this board. Trgovac is not a true DC in the NFL and no one else would hire him as one. Go become a position coach and good luck with getting your knowledge together to become the head of an NFL Defensive unit. You're horrible!

3-4defense is the way to go

Scott Fowler's point was quite valid (players being more important than coaches)... I just hope that we don't lose Peppers outright without getting anything in return...Herm Edwards just became availible, isn't he a defensive guy? Played with Coach Fox in college, right? Hmm.

The writing is on the wall...Peppers to the Packers for Kampman! Capers LOVES Julius and knows how to motivate him...And Don't forget GB is switching to a 3-4D. If this comes true, and I hope it doesn't...FIRE Fox, bring in Cowher and start all over. AND find a new PANTHER FAN too!!!!!!

Capers left the panthers years before they drafted Pep. Capers has never been on any staff Peppers played for. So my question would be exactly how do you surmise that Capers knows how to motivate Pep?

^Thats What I Was Thinking BPenn^

I think the Panthers will be fine, I still can't believe we let the Cardinals beat us at home like that and now their in the superbowl, but whatever!

We have a chance to become better and get some fresh blood on the staff!

*Lets hope we make some good hires, and have another solid draft!

If an NFL player needs motivation he'll never be great. JP's search for this motivation is a futile one. Either you got it or you don't, don't blame the city don't blame the coaches. If you're 6'7" and a star DE for any team people will pay you attention whether it's Charlotte or NY. Stop whining and work harder.

Trgovac was horrible! He couldn't call a game, make adjustments at halftime, no blitzing, no pressure, too much cushion for WR's, couldn't stop the run..the list is endless. Trgovac lived off of all the talent we have on defense. Also, our defense was overrated all year. We won because our offense (Williams,Smith,Stewart,Moose, exploded! Thank God for that! I am glad all our d coaches left, now we can be aggressive! Go get the defensive coordinator from the Chargers....Ron Rivera!! He is excellent! He is not signed yet either. He used to be the Bears D Coordinator when they went to the SB. Took over the Chargers defense when they were 4-8 and led them to the division title and playoffs!!! He is the one and a 3-4 defense will put Beason, Peppers and a few others in the HOF!!!!

I guarantee that with Trgovac in Green Bay coaching their defensive line that they will rank in the lower 5 of sacks next year. When we went to the SB a few years ago, it happened because their was just too much talent on our defense. A high school coach could have called the defense that year.

Needless to say Trgovac was the defensive line coach under Jack Del Rio. Now he is going to have the same job under another great defensive mind. Green Bay's defense was already getting good, it will be that much better next year.

It ain't the defensive schemes that are lacking, it's player toughness...guys who aren't quitting on plays...who have an attitude that says to the other team "you're not gonna run or pass on us!" A defense either has that mentality or it doesn't. The Panthers didn't at the end of the season.

Yo, just read pj's post about finding a new panther fan... Panther nation doesn't want u and sure doesn't need u! Posts like that just prove ur a bandwagoner and a fair weather fan.. Good riddance and know his true diehard fans stick thru thick and thin and not just dependent upon who leaves and who stays! Panther Nation rise up!

Lets not go blaming everything on coaching folks - the players deserve some "credit" for that meltdown against Arizona also.

Trgo was always a bit of a 'C-' coordinator. His defenses played with proper technique and were generally schematically sound, but he couldn't keep up with OCs in the league, and hence our D would always start strong, then fade as OCs found ways to exploit it, and Trgovac didn't have what it took to make the quick adjustments needed. I think as a DC, he was a victim of the "Peter Principle:" a very good position coach, and an average to below coordinator. He should be fantastic as a position coach.

Haslett would be a great hire -- a stellar coordinator who was a fair to middling head coach. Exactly what we need.

Peppers (and the rest of the defense) has an issue with Jake giving games away. So do 77 percent of the fans!! They are keeping Jake and losing the key component to so many victories by this franchise. Why did the Charlotte Observer take down that "what to do with Jake" poll. Did the results reflect too much of the truth??? What a communist/hick propaganda pamphlet this paper turned out to be!

Posted by: Keeping It Real | Jan 25, 2009 12:35:51 AM

even though jake turned the ball over a good defense will stop the other teams offense anyone watch the pittsburg baltimore game turnovers happen we just went into the card game with the same ole gameplan you have to change some plays once in awhile if you cant run the ball then you change blocking schemes so you can you dont abandon the run all together especially when thats youre bread and butter and on the defense you have to make changes so you can get to the quarterback .even jake would light up this defense

"Now the handcuffs can be taken off of the defense," you say? That is funny. John Fox handcuffs this team. He is the head coach/defensive coordinator and until he gets his hands off, nothing is going to change.

Trade Pep for Matt Cassell fron New England even out and see if we can get to the next level

Posted by: lifelong | Jan 26, 2009 6:26:02 PM

:) :) WOOHOOOOOOOO This makes losing the Arizona game totally worth it now. F U Trgovac you worthless piece of crap

Posted by: FireTurdgovac | Jan 26, 2009 10:56:04 PM

i hope youre wrong about fox handcuffing meeks.it was worth the loss to arizona to get trdo out.now all we need is a def tacckle and def end. we should be able to do that with draft picks from the peppers deal and the money we save from not signing that loafer.
