Panthers hire Baker to coach D-line

The Carolina Panthers announced late this afternoon that they’ve hired Brian Baker, most recently with the St. Louis Rams, as their new defensive line coach.

Baker replaces Sal Sunseri, who left last month to become assistant head coach/linebackers coach at the University of Alabama.

Baker’s hiring completes the remaking of the Panthers’ defensive staff after several offseason defections.

Baker, 46, spent the past three seasons as the Rams’ defensive line coach after previously working as a defensive assistant for the Vikings, Lions and Chargers.

“We are pleased to welcome Brian Baker to our coaching staff,” coach John Fox said in a statement released by the team. “Brian is a veteran coach and excellent teacher who has thorough knowledge of the game. We look forward to the energy and style he will bring to our club.”

Baker coached Vikings all-pro defensive tackle Kevin Williams in 2004 and earlier worked with Pro Bowlers Robert Porcher and Luther Elliss in Detroit.

Before joining the pro ranks, Baker was an assistant coach in the ACC, first at Maryland (1984-85) and then at Georgia Tech (1987-95).

He played outside linebacker at Maryland from 1981-83, helping the Terrapins go undefeated in the conference in 1983.

Baker played for coach Bobby Ross at Maryland and later coached under Ross in San Diego and Detroit. In 1996, Baker spent a season in San Diego when current Panthers’ general manager Marty Hurney was working for the Chargers.

The Panthers previously hired Ron Meeks to replace Mike Trgovac as defensive coordinator, Richard Smith to succeed Ken Flajole as linebackers coach and Ron Milus to take over for Tim Lewis as a defensive backs coach.

The dude has coached players to the Pro Bowl level...he can't completely control the W's & L's so he comes from a crappy team...with a one dimensonal offense...there were 2 impressive games they played, one was at FedEx against the RedSkins who were hot and coming off 4 w's in a row...the Rams D stuck em
The other game was against the Cowboys the following week, holding the Pokes to just 14 points.
