Holt to Carolina? Owens to Hall of Fame?

Less than a year ago, St. Louis Rams receiver Torry Holt let it be known he'd one day like to play with the Carolina Panthers. At the time, his brother Terrence, a safety, was on the Panthers' roster.

Terrence is gone now, but Torry is available via trade and could be on the market soon if the Rams can't find a trade partner and instead release him.

St. Louis needs to make a decision by mid-March, when Holt is due a $1.25 million roster bonus.

It's hard to imagine the Panthers trading a draft pick for Holt and there's virtually no way they'd be able to keep him under the $6.65 million base salary he's scheduled to make in 2009 with his current contract.

But if Holt gets released, thinigs could get interesting. Holt, a possible future Hall of Famer, might not be a top-flight No. 1 receiver anymore, but teamed with Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad, would give the Panthers a dynamic trio. Holt would have to be signed at a deal that is very cap-friendly, however, because the Panthers have a very tight cap situation.

But the Carolina depth chart might already be too crowded for a player of Holt's accomplishments. As good as he is, he lacks Muhammad's excellent blocking abilities and thus might not be as good of a fit in the starting lineup as Moose.

The Panthers could use another receiver, but they could opt to add a prospect in the draft, or perhaps sign a lower-priced veteran free agent.

As for Terrell Owens, released by Dallas, it goes without saying Carolina wants nothing to do with him. He is the anti-Panther because of his consistent penchant to be divisive in the locker room.

Kudos to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for realizing the T.O. experiment did not work. It's likely that some team will sign Owens (is it time for the Raiders to step up?), but whoever does should expect the same trouble the 49ers, Eagles and Cowboys have experienced.

The problems Owens has caused on all three teams is a huge part of his resume and deserves to be given serious examination when his time comes to be considered for the Hall of Fame. Honestly, that's a tough vote to envision casting right now. I'm leaning strongly toward "no." He has the stats and the skills, but he may have caused more problems for his teams than any other star player in recent history.

sign Holt, then what happens with Jarrett? It would ruin his chances long term, I'd want out if I was him.

Dre Bly is out there too...and vonnie holliday...

I saw Torry Holt at NBA AllStar weekend in Phoenix and was speaking to him.....me and my buddy told him that we were from Charlotte and he said that he was SERIOUSLY thinking about moving to Charlotte. That made me think....hmmmm, is he coming to play with the Panthers? I hope so, but then we'll have to get rid of one of our other receivers. But which one?

No to Owens HoF...he lacks the human pedgree necessary to represent the NFL's best with dignity.

The problem here is we have all of this power game at WR, but we still need to address a QB issue. More WRs are not gonna solve this problem. We need a solid QB. Not a pro bowl QB one game and a High School QB the next. I think its time Moore got a better shot at it.

At 32 Torry Holt has a 2 or 3 good years left in him. We need a receiver to replace Hackett. Holt wants to retire in the Carolinas and he needs a few years of playing time here to increase his visibilty and secure those retirement endorsements. This deal can get done if Fox/Hurney want it.

i think it would be a great move if jarrett could do kr's. we could have stevie, moose, and holt as yop 3, jarret could be 4, also having kick return added to his plate. you never know unless u try!!! any1 feel the same???? go panthers a championship will be ours this year no matter who we sign get rid of!!!!!

Doubt Holt would make the team. Assuming Carolina still wants Wr's who see downfield blocking as part of their job description!

Bring back Ricky Manning @ CB (St.L)

12 yr vet Chris Naeole @ OG (Jack)most certainly would bring in tons of experience--whats wrong with a vet. backup who could also tutor the young guys Carolina has left on the roster.

4 yr vet Richie Incognito (St.L) has played and started 3 different positions (OC & both OG spots)which is a value Carolina lost with the departure of Hangartner

Holt was thinking of Carlolina because of his brother...How cool it would be to play with his brother. Thats it...NO discounts for wanting to be a panther anymore. Top dollar now that we cut his bro.

Panthers needs a quarterback like Matt Ryan

Posted by: Panthersfan | Mar 5, 2009 6:16:14 PM

What's good about Delhome: throw the ball up to air
And hope Steve brings it down. It's time for him to go

Posted by: Panthersfan | Mar 5, 2009 6:21:43 PM

Lets let Matt Ryan and Matt Cassell play more than 1 season before we crown them star quarterbacks and not potentially one-year wonders.

sign Jerry Rice, Gene Washington and the other available receivers....give me a break

Posted by: Terry Bradshaw | Mar 5, 2009 6:28:50 PM

quit complaining about Jake. You Jake haters are immature and ignorant. Jake is our starter for next year, and then may be our number 2 or a while. Our QB situation is better than at least 20 teams. So buzz off dimwits.

I believe Torry will end up in Dallas

Posted by: jbw | Mar 5, 2009 6:59:10 PM

jbw! hahaha Dallas? They jsut swallowed 9 million to cut Owens. No WAY he goes there. They just don't have the cash.

Carolina doesn't either, but they'll have just enough when we get rid of Ken Lucas.

SIGN TORRY HOLT!!! We would have Smith, Moose, Holt, Jarrett, Robinson. Both Moose & Holt would only be here for a year or two and allow Jarret time to grow into a professional WR. If Ryne Robinson can stay healthy and get involved in the offense, he can have a big impact. However, we need a QB. I really like Matt Moore. The kid was 2-1 when he started and was never given a full real chance. Another year on the bench this year has given him another year of experience from the sideline. Time to hand over the reigns. We have a power run game, so Matt would have to manage the game and offense. We would not put the game on his shoulders. Give Matt Moore an extension for a few years and make him the starter. Trade Jake for two midround picks (2nd & 3rd), trade Peppers, Brayton and load up on mid round picks (2nd,3rd,4th).Save on cap, load up on picks to add depth & give Matt Moore a chance.

sign holt.hes still a great reciver and easily in the top 10 best wrs in the nfl with smith being number 1.if caro signs holt they easyily have the best wr tandrom in the nfl.he way better then any rookie or young reciver or any other vetren so sign him because i think he should easily still be the number 1 reciever on most teams but we got steve so holt should be number 2 in caro with moose being number 3 and we got a perfect recieving corps.

Posted by: hyj | Mar 5, 2009 8:17:16 PM

Eric,

Holt is from Gibsonville, NC. His desire to play for Carolina was more than just being on the same team as his brother; he wants to come home.

I agree with Charlie. How many times are we going to read "cap space is tight" because two player Peppers and Jake are taking almost $30 Million. Come on - someone on the Panthers must know this is ridiculous. Fox is know for holding on to players too long. Give Moore the ball and let's go play with the young guns.

Get off Jakes Back you Morons...HE had one really bad game...It trips me out all you idiots out the the season he hurt his elbow...I went to every game and all I heard was man I cant wait for Jake to get back...WE NEED HIM...All you people no very little about the entire game of football. A lot more goes into it than you see on TV. The game against Arizona wasnt all his fault. There are about 20-25 Teams out there that would love nothing more than to have a guy that is a PROVEN WINNER...Remember this morons WE WERE 12-4 with him and terrible without him...HE will be our starter next year so get over it...LEARN THE GAME....

Posted by: JUSTIN | Mar 5, 2009 11:25:06 PM

Justin-
1) No and know = 2 different words. Learn that
2) Delhomme is a liability. 15 TDs to 12 picks is not demonstrating greatness.

would love to have Torry Holt on the Panthers but Jake Delhome has got to go.... that dude imploded in the worst way on the biggest stage... he isn't that accurate any way, and if steve smith, mushin, and jarrett aren't jumping out of the stadium to catch his horrible throws than he looks like he did during the playoffs... c-ya jake your time has come and gone...just like that...
