Panthers release Lucas

The Carolina Panthers announced today that they have released veteran cornerback Ken Lucas.

Lucas started 49 games in four seasons with the Panthers and had 13 interceptions.

“Ken Lucas has been a very valuable player for us over the last four years and played an important role on two playoff teams during that span.  Ken is a true pro and we wish him the very best,” said general manager Marty Hurney.  “This year, we have re-signed some veteran players and this move means some younger players will have an opportunity to step up.”

Lucas was the center of a major preseason news story in 2008 when he was punched in the face by teammate Steve Smith during a training camp fight. Lucas quickly forgave Smith, however, helping the team avoid what could have been a major distraction.

Happy days are here again............

It helps the cap, but Ken was an excellent corner, he just wasn't allowed to play his game (one on one) instead of our hole-y zone!

And nothing to show for it, dang. I can't believe someone wouldn't give up a 7th rounder for him.

Who is Steve Smith going let his frustrations out on now?

have a feeling several teams have been waiting for this to happen....21 is a solid/experienced pro...and they will jump on him quickly...wish Carolina could have held out for a trade, but why would other teams trade if in the end they felt they'd have a shot at 21 for nothing...best of luck to 21 more times than not over the last 4 yrs he played consistently well...

I've sent him a list and you're on it.

Watch Atlanta pick him up to cover smitty and the two get in a fist fight during the game (kinda like when Deangelo Hall punched smitty in the jaw a few years ago)... my money is on Smitty...

The most important thing is, how much cap space did they free up?

Roughly 2.4 Mill

from what i can remember

Well it sure looks like the Panthers are drafting a CB in the draft with one of their first two picks.

He didnt fit Trgo-TRASH's wack scheme. Ken Lucas is a cover 2/man corner. Not that soft zone we played last season

wonder if this means they are also getting ready to do something with Peppers, maybe for a corner and picks

THANK GOD!!!!

Don't let the door hit you on the way out...and get out of town before I see you crossing the street in front of me.

Maybe Peppers can play cornerback!

I do wish him well, but I think this is a good move. He made me nervous on big plays.

Send Gamble with him.

Could this be the beginning of acquiring Torry Holt?

Send Gamble with him.
