Panthers restructure Baker's contract

The Panthers have restructured the contract of punter Jason Baker, his agent Frank Murtha said Friday.

Baker, who was scheduled to make $1.1 million this season, will now make $850,000. The rest of his deal, which runs through 2012, now includes $1.37 million in '10, $1.4 million in '11 and $1.55 in '12.

"(The Panthers) felt it was the right thing to do, so they moved a little money around," said Murtha.

The restructuring saves the Panthers money against this year's salary cap. They've already released cornerback Ken Lucas and are considering whether they should re-sign free agents such as long snapper Jason Kyle and returner Mark Jones. -- David Scott

KEEP Jason Kyle... Let Mark Jones leave... Jason Carter can beat Rhyne robinson for the job... Carter was AWESOME before he got hurt...

Yea, Carter's THE MAN !!!!!!

The long snapper can cost you a game if he screws up. The Panthers better not screw around with Kyle. Resign him.

arrrrrggg.... this is the most boring offseason ever!!! i never thought i'd be checking blogs periodicly to check and see if we resigned our LONG SNAPPER!!! no free agents no first round pick.... this is gonna be a long 7 months.

J Thomas I totally agree... Can we please get rid of pep and get excited about the first round pick we get for him??????

My bad that comment was for Matt S.

I just need someone to answer this cause maybe I was looking at it wrong then. But weren't we a couple of years ago one of the top franchises when it came to having money available?(cowboys, redskins, that short)or were we just in the middle?(Although you wouldn't know that this year). Because to be this strapped so quickly...thats all I'm saying.

do you folks even know how much Jason Kyle want or do you have any guess in how much he got last yr

maybe you should find out before you say sign a guy & lat the CB on our roster be all we have or are you happy with our Depth at OLine because we don't even have enought cap space to sign our upcoming draft picks & YES WE ARE IN CAP HELL

Posted by: kenneth picklesimer | Mar 13, 2009 3:53:38 PM

This is nickle and dime stuff. Messing with 400,000 is not going to make much of an impact on the cap. Lets talk about Jakes cap and a few high dollar players. And move Pep. Dropping pep will allow us to aford a few better than good players rather than one great.

The Rams just released Torry Holt. Bring him in (i know a lot of you think he is washed up)and we will have us another "possession" receiver. I know he is old but the man can still play. I also know we need to focus all of our cap room on defense but we can get him for a good price. Resign Mark Jones and keep Jason Carter.....Carter can ball. Resign Jason Kyle also.....he is one of the most consistent players on our team.

One more thing.....The Ravens are probably about to release Samari Rolle. The already released Chris McAllister. Let's pick one of them up to give us some DB depth. I know they are also old but as i said above, we can get them for a good price just simply because of their age.

If Jake is a team player, then why is he not restructuring his absurd contract. Kurt Warner is willing to take a pay cut to re-sign Boldin. Gotta trade Pep or sign him long term, can't pay that much for one year, no matter who the player is. Let's bring in Holt and open up our offense some more. Another WR threat takes the pressure off of Smith and will make our ground game even more explosive.

All of this free agent chatter is great but never gona happen unless pep either signs so we can trade him...a team steps up and makes an offer sheet for him, or he signs a lesser deal so we can sign some guys. Please make the call to the Pats...i hate them, but would love 2 of their top 4 picks and more so the salary cap benefits.

Jason hit it right on the head Jake needs to wake up and smell the roses...Jason Carter will be good, im countn on it. but a T. Holt be great.
And just so everyone is clear we cant trade pep until he signs the tender...otherwise we wait for an offersheet from a team that we agree to...sendm to the Pats.

What i don't get is why the Panthers haven't approach Jake agent about getting has deal restructured. Jake agent said two weeks ago the Panthers haven't call him...11 millions...Jake nowhere near worth that & its keeping us from signing someone like Holt who we really need because this will open S.Smith up even more.

no new deal or restructures for Jake cause that will extend his contract. if we are looking to replace him if he blows up this year, it's harder to do that if he's contracted out for more years under a restructured deal now, and we carry a bigger cap hit longer. but don't worry.... Cutler's comin.

Torry Holt is 3 yrs youger than Moose. I love Moose, but this is probably his last year anyway. So bring in Holt, this way when Moose retires, we still have a proven number 2 with experience. This is a no brainer. I agree, we are in cap hell. The crap just hasn't totally hit the fan yet. Basically though, if we trade Peppers and Delhomme, we are no longer in cap hell. I would be fine with trading Peppers for multiple 2nd and 3rd round picks and handing the team over to Matt Moore and trade Jake for a few more 2nd and 3rd round picks. The middle round picks are cheaper, quality, add depth and less risk. Dropping Peppers and Jake and picking up all middle round picks would solve all of our problems. Although, I admit that it would not be flashy and wouldn't excite the fan base. However, it would be solid and mean something where it counts, on the field.

Hey Charlie, I vote us as the knew Dual GM's for the Panthers. Let's do it. We get Holt, trade Pep....NOW LET'S HIT THE DRAFT!

I have said it before and I will say it again. Cut Jake and all these problems go away. We have an excellent running game what better time to put a Matt Moore in there. Take a lesson from Atlanta. One last thing as long as Jake is our QB what difference does it make who our wide outs are. He cannot make the pass anyway.

Posted by: chop503 | Mar 14, 2009 6:54:24 AM

Where were you guys when this team was going 12-4 and battling for the number 1 seed in the NFC? Cut Jake? Yes the guy has some really bad games but how many NFC championships has he led us to? Sign Holt?!? Great another aging receiver. In case you haven't seen this team has lost 3 OL. The OL was a strength as seen in our running game. The problem is Peppers!! We can't restructure his contract because he wants out!! He is CAP number is equal to the tax increase going through Congress. Its time to trade him and get ready for the draft. A second and third with an quality OL will do!!

Posted by: figment | Mar 14, 2009 8:55:21 AM

With all these players restructuring their contracts to help out the team and stay here longer. Why is Jake not restructuring his to help the team out especially after that terrible playoff game and if Gross really wants to be here he would help out too.
