Cadogan fills void of LT backup for Gross

Cadogan200p When the NFL draft ended Sunday, the Panthers' depth chart was void of any legitimate backup to put behind left tackle Jordan Gross. So they addressed that needed quickly in the wild-and-wooly undrafted free agency market, signing Penn State's Gerald Cadogan (6-5, 309 pounds), who some analysts had projected to be a third or fourth round pick. He was ranked No. 82 in the Observer's Top 100.

Cadogan (at right, AP Photo) played left tackle for the Nittany Lions after replacing first-round pick Levi Brown as a sophomore. He was a first time All-Big Ten player last season.

Cadogan's agent, Scott Smith, said he received "tons" of phone calls after the draft from teams wanting to sign Cadogan, but that the Panthers offered the best opportunity -- and of course backed that up with competitive signing bonus.

"You're getting a guy you didn't have to use a draft pick on, but someone who is a very talented blocker who should be in the league a long time," said Smith.

Smith said Panthers officials told him Cadogan would start out as Gross' backup.

Cadogan's 40-yard dash time of 5.12 seconds was tied for fourth best among offensive linemen at the NFL combine in February.

According to various internet reports, here are other undrafted free agents the Panthers have signed:

-- Louisville QB Hunter Cantwell -- Filled in for last season after Brian Brohm (Packers' second-round pick) left for the pros. Passed for 2,493 yards, with 16 touchdown passes and 16 interceptions. He becomes the No. 4 QB behind Jake Delhomme, Josh McCown and Matt Moore.

-- Penn State SS Anthony Scirrotto -- A team captain for the Nittany Lions who had 66 tackles and a fumble recovery.

-- Rutgers TE Kevin Brock -- Started six of 13 games last season, catching 26 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns.

-- LSU DT Marlon Favorite -- Was a part-time starter last season (7 of 13 games) and has not shown much as an inside pass rusher, but is much better against the run.

-- West Virginia LB Morrty Ivy -- Starter the past two seasons, playing WLB in '07 and SLB in '08. Had 90 tackles, six pass breakups and three interceptions last year.

-- Illinois LB Brit Miller -- Hard-nosed player had 132 tackles from the middle linebacker position. Led the Big Ten in tackling. Was a team captain.

-- Pittsburgh C-G C.J. Davis -- Started the first seven games at left guard last season, then filled in at center when the regular starter was injured.

-- California LS Nick Sundberg -- A former walk-on who spent four years working exclusively as Cal's snapper. The Panthers have a need at the position with veteran free agent Jason Kyle still unsigned.

-- Central Florida OT Patrick Brown

-- Morgan State DT Lonnie Harvey

-- Purdue LB Anthony Heygood

-- Michigan State DT Justin Kershaw

-- Wesley College KR/WR Larry Beavers

-- Louisiana-Lafayette WR Jaron Chery

-- Connecticut center Keith Gray

-- Bishop College RB Jamall Lee

I heard a lot of good things about Cadogan before the draft. This is like getting another draft pick this year. Nice to have the added depth.

This is an excellent pick up. I was hoping this would happen. Now after this season we can trade Gross and free up more cap room to sign Peppers to a 20-25 mil a year contract. You dont let taltent like Peppers get away. We need to lock him up. This is going to work out great.

I like the way the panthers are thinking with getting Cadogan to back up Gross and getting Everette Brown and how they actually got a QB, but I still think we should pick up a QB in the future draft to come if not next year the following year.

Cantwell has an excellent arm, NFL starting caliber from what I hear. If he impresses in camp, he might just make the roster.

Jamall Lee has good bloodline. His father was the last Canadian to lead the CFL in rushing yards. Could rise up and take the 3rd RB spot.

Catogen should have been drafted. No idea how he snuck through out of the draft altogether.

Good pickups. Just want to comment on what Procton said though. Trade Jordan Gross in favor of a undrafted free agent? Surely you must be joking. He would be the draft gem of the century if he becomes anywhere near the player that Jordan Gross is. I wouldn't count our chickens before they hatch.

Money is not going to entice Julius Peppers to resign, we already offered him a contract to make him the highest paid DE in the league. He just doesn't like our team. Period. He wants to be a Patriot.

I'd rather have a balanced D-Line with good solid players in all positions than a weak D-Line with an overpaid star at defensive end.

In response to Michael Procton...

Seriously, like Revshawn said, trade Peppers because we signed an undrafted free agent? That would probably would be the absolute stupidest thing an NFL team has done in years.

Then resign Peppers to a $20-$25 million dollar deal? In what world has he deserved that type of money? Is it his 10 sacks per season average or the fact that he does not want to be here next year or ever again at this point?

The Panthers will be lucky to have three guys from this list to make the 53 man roster. I appreciate the enthusiasm but we can't go overboard here.

Why was Cadogan undrafted. Its cool if we got him on a steal, but that's a little strange...

GUESS WHO IAM???? I TRADED A FIRST ROUND PICK FOR A SECOND. I RESIGNED A TERRIBLE QB TO FIVE YEARS WHO IS 34.
Here a song about me:
I ruined the panthers draft, could have helped but i got high. could have cheated and listened to a smart guy but i got high. jerry richarson really needs to fire these guy because they got high.

cadogan will be the only one that will make the team, and he probably will be expected too...especially if was purposely signed to be a backup, you know he will make the team

Tackles - Gross, Otah, Schwartz, Cadogan
Guards - Wharton, Vincent, Robinson
Centers - Khalil, Bernadeau

looks like it should be pretty solid to me...

Posted by: brad | Apr 27, 2009 9:24:20 PM

WOW g8panther96, that sucked. I just love it that the Panthers have so many fans like you.

There must have been some reason why Cadogan wasn't drafted, but somehow good players manage to slip through the cracks sometimes and turn out to be gems as UDFAs. Hopefully Cadogan will be one of those. This should fill out our need for OL depth, with him and Duke Robinson to go along with Schwartz and Bernadeau.

Oh yeah i defend the panthers draft, NO BECAUSE IT SUCKED. Im so cool and mature with the name jim. i would be beter at drafting then them

panthers traded afirst round pick for a second, because Fox and hurney got high. Could have cheated and listened to a smart guy, no because fox and hurney got high. Stuff was already wrong with us until i got high. signed jake delhommo because i got high

g8panther96, why don't you go get high? You were probably high when you wrote this.

I'm so tired of these nonsense comments that some of these Panthers fans are making. According to some of you, the Panthers can't do anything right. This is not Madden 09 where you can trade anyone for anything. Get real and grow up and support your team.

At least we're not Lions or Raiders fans.

A FLA State player is an excellent pick and I like Hurney's philsophy of trading away our first round pick for Mr. Brown. You guys need to lay off Fox and Hurney and you know who you are. Mr. Richardson is a very talented business person and talented football mind, if he thought that Fox and Hurney should go, they would be gone.

THE FOLLOWING WAS POSTED BY PROCTON AKA "D-A" DA 2 words think about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"""""This is an excellent pick up. I was hoping this would happen. Now after this season we can trade Gross and free up more cap room to sign Peppers to a 20-25 mil a year contract. You dont let taltent like Peppers get away. We need to lock him up. This is going to work out great.""""""

Procton,
you must be a complete idiot if you think carolina is going to trade an all-pro LT who they just payed big money to!!!!!!!!!

The problem is not not having money to sign Peppers the problem is that he said he wants to play elsewhere!!!!!!!!!! I would love to keep him and I hope they can work out a way for him to stay, but They offered him a Huge contract, estemated to make him a top 3 defensive player in term of $ in a contract and he refused!!!!!!!!!! Think before you type, because they are not going to turn over the reigns of the LT position to a second year undrafted Free-agent, when they have an All pro!!!!!!

g8panther96 is a little young to be high...I'd say he's 13 years old at the oldest. Stay in school kid, and remember, dope is for dopes!

Posted by: Jim | Apr 27, 2009 10:41:18 PM

I agree with "Jim" in terms that I am tired of hearing from fans like "g8panther96". You sound high from your grammar mistake riddled posts. If you knew anything about the draft you would know that Brown was a first round player that slipped into the second round. So in essence we drafted a first round player this year instead of next year just like what we did last year with Otah.

I cant believe what I'm reading...Isn't this the charlotte observer? How can such noninformative & childish rhetoric be tolerated. I came on here to find out some info about our UDFA's & these are the comments...?I dont know you Mr. Chandler, but I think you should at least take some responsibility for the posts that are left under columns with your name attached to them. I know you cant control what people post, but you or someone in your staff could show some censorship sometimes. Thank you. GO PANTHERS!
