Panthers notebook: Kalil looking bigger
-- Center Ryan Kalil looks a bit bigger and more muscular than last season, which should serve him well next season.
-- Among those who helped convince former Panthers safety Mike Minter not to enter politics was close friend and ex-defensive end Mike Rucker, whose primary concern was the amount of time a campaign and the public office would take Minter away from his family. Minter said he also conferred with his pastor and didn't discern a calling to make the move.
Minter may receive some friendly razzing from his buddies for appearing on the cover of the June issue of Today's Charlotte Woman magazine. Minter is featured in a Q&A about his diverse post-football career path.
-- If fourth-round draft pick Mike Goodson is anywhere near as good as he looks in summer school practices, the Panthers have added an extra dimension to their offense.
-- There was a reunion of former Carolina defensive linemen at a fundraiser Thursday night. Rucker, Sean Gilbert, Al Wallace and Shane Burton were present and all still looked capable of doing some damage on the field.
-- The Panthers held their annual golf outing this week, which coach John Fox likes for its team-bonding value. According to several participants, the event included lots of fun, a wide diversity in golfing skills and some bizarre shots that belied description.
-- Wide receiver Steve Smith had some fun in informal position drills last week during school when he lined up as a defensive back, joking with coach Fox that he was excited about playing Cover 2. Just to be sure no one gets the wrong impression, Smith will remain a full-time receiver.
T-- he Panthers are scheduled for eight more days of summer school practices – Monday through Thursday for the next two weeks – before getting their long-awaited break before training camp.

I'm just going to laugh about the idea of Sean Gilbert "still being able" to do damage on the football field. We sure never saw that when he was a player.

yea i'm laughing hysterically at the Gilbert comment. He should never be allowed to do anything with the organization. Goodson, on the other hand, is going to be a baller. Great scouting by the team during the spring

Good to hear the panthers are doing team building outside of the football field! With a squad of mostly returning starters....you have to do "fun stuff" to lightin the atmosphere and "reenforce" chemistry!

It's good to hear Kalil has bulked up. I'm sure he's still the smallest guy on the line and a bit undersized (according to some analysts) at the C position. But still, if he's gotten stouter, that's a bonus in the run game against opposing DTs.
It also appears that Mike Goodson has probably got a lock on a roster spot now. He's the easy replacement for multi-purpose Nick Goings, only he's probably an upgrade talent-wise. If he's got good hands and enough spring in his step to takeover KR/PR duties, serve as a good tackler on special teams, a backup RB, and a slot WR...he's got big-play potential from a variety of positions. I just hope he doesn't have any character issue flare-ups while he's with the team.

Kalil bulking up will help him endure the season at one of the toughest, physical positions in the game. We don't have room for O-line injuries this year.

Good for Kalil. However, you have to hope he didn't overdo it and add on so much bulk it'll hamper the mobility and athleticism that made him such a highly regarded prospect in the first place, despite being "small." His size before was very comprable with the Pro Bowl centers of the past few years.

kalil will be a pro bowler very soon.great scouting job by hurney and don gregory.i drank the goodson koolade as soon as i saw the u-tube video.hopefully fox will have the sense to get him the ball 8-10 times per game, including punts and kickoffs. i would love to see him working in the slot against safeties and linebackers.i honestly have not seen moves like his since barry sanders retired.i thought that u-tube video was altered at first. he looked like the roadrunner and everyone else was wile- coyote.

Hey guys! Guess what?
Dan Morgan just retired again! :D We won't have a raging Morgan terrorizing Williams and Stewart on the field.

dan is smart to retire.one stewart knee to the head would have given him brain damage.
