Godfrey's injury another blow to defense
Coach John Fox had few details to report about safety Charles Godfrey's broken right hand on Monday, except to say he'd had surgery on it. Fox didn't say how long Godfrey will be out (he's "day-to-day" according to Fox) or if he'll wear a cast on it when he returns.
It's another blow to the Panthers' defense -- especially up the middle -- where nose tackle Maake Kemoeatu (torn Achilles) is already out for the season and middle linebacker Jon Beason (sprained knee) also continues to be day-to-day, according the Fox.
-- Linebackers Thomas Davis and Landon Johnson returned to practice Monday after being out for extended periods with injuries. RB Jonathan Stewart continued to rest a sore Achilles and guard C.J. Davis also missed practice with an ankle injury he suffered early in training camp. S Nate Salley (knee) wasn't at practice.
-- The Panthers are now in the process of winnowing their candidates for the No. 4 receiving position and at kick/punt returner when they released Jason Carter. Carter hadn't had a strong training camp, and that came after he was very impressive in Spartanburg in '08 before suffering a season-ending knee surgery.
That leaves the receiver's job to Kenneth Moore and Ryne Robinson, although Moore has been more impressive in the preseason. There's a chance Moore will return kicks on Saturday against the Ravens, too.
-- The Panthers signed S Kevin Kaesviharn to take Carter's spot on the roster. Kaesviharn (pronounced CASE-vih-harn) is in his ninth year and played with the New Orleans Saints last season. Panthers fans might remember Kaesviharn from 2006, when he intercepted a last-gasp pass in the end zone from Jake Delhomme to Keyshawn Johnson, preserving a 17-14 victory for the Cincinnati Bengals. -- David Scott

Anyone ask FOX about Beason??

I felt like we needed another safety anyway. Just didn't want us to have to bring him in this way. So much for Godfrey getting the interceptions I though he would get this year in the new defense. I figured his cornerback skills would have worked out pretty good with the scheme.

His CB skills would work at the CB spot
Not the S spot. What is up with our organization and this backwards moves

Good, Godfrey sucks! He is no safety...maybe a corner back at best. Safety's actually tackle and make plays...he sucks!

Justin shuttup, you are a homer, a real homer. Real fans recognize the boneheaded stubborness in their team & could already point to this disaster of a season unfolding.

D.W.G. shuttup, your a dumbass, a real dumbass. A real fan backs the players on their favorite team not whine and complain all the time. Give the guy time, safety is a tough position to play.

Really? I thought Godfrey had a good rookie year. I'd rather have him out there than Kaesviharn. Good move though to sign him, if Godfrey's hand makes him a liability then Kaesviharn is good insurance.

Panther Pat is a Dallas Cowgirls fan who knows nothing about football.

Maybe that bye in week 4 isn't such a bad thing after all....

Het folks...Post whatever you want, but keep in mind that the OTHERS will post their feelings about your post. BTW, I still feel that the O will come together, but I am concerned about the D. I think 10-6 is both a realistic, and optimistic, goal. Just MY two cents.

I meant "hey", not "het"...sorry.

the jury is still out on how godfrey will work out but he made a few plays out there last year and got burnt a bit too. not every rookie is john beason or julius peppers. some are more thomas davis or brad hoover. let the dust settle. i think the team is good but the injury's and salary crunch issues will call for a 9-7, 8-8 type year. the team is better than that but not when starters aren't starting and when we were already thin to begin with.

Kaesviharn...Who else was considered??? Maybe we will win the SUPERBOWL. Because this season is starting out kinda rough. We get our share of injuries, maybe we need a new strength and conditioning coach??? OR maybe we need to get one,if we don't have one.

i cant believe you people. youre all as nervous as a whore in church. godfrey can play with a cast when the season starts like gamble did and beasons knee is strained, not torn up. reeeelaxxxx! we needed a vet at safety anyways and connor will do well till beason comes back.
p.s im not a big kemo fan. i feel it will be a lot easier to replace him than people think. ray lewis asked the ravens not to sign kemo and pf weekly didnt even rate kemo in the top 25 last year.

Too bad the Bucs don't play the Panthers early in the season!
Posted by: SONOFBUCSTER | Aug 25, 2009 7:57:32 PM
... because the Panthers would only beat my Bucs 21-6 instead of 42-3
