Goodson fined for gesture vs. Giants

Panthers rookie running back Mike Goodson was fined $7,500 by the NFL for unsportsmanlike conduct for his throat-slashing gesture following a 14-yard touchdown run in Monday night's exhibition against the New York Giants.

Goodson's debut with the Panthers was packed with thrills and chills. His touchdown run was a nifty cutback to the left after he found the right side of the line stuffed by the Giants defense. On the previous play, he ran 16 yards with a pitch down the left sidelines.

However, he also fumbled twice after pass receptions, losing one, and was penalized 15 yards for the throat-slash, which is not allowed in the NFL.

The league announced the penalty this afternoon.

On a brighter note, Goodson was back at practice with the Panthers Friday two days after suffering a bruised leg in training camp.

foolishness. the NFL FO is a soft bunch. Who actually cares?

Posted by: ripp | Aug 21, 2009 5:35:40 PM

I care! The NFL needs to distance itself from this type of gangster stupidity unless it wants to sink to the level of the NBA.

What's a "sloat-slashing"?

Posted by: Susie G | Aug 21, 2009 6:02:20 PM

Whoever cares about this is a fool. You're the same ones that dont want them celebrating after touchdowns.

He moved his hand past his throat. Big Deal.

How is that "gangster"?

Posted by: Todd | Aug 21, 2009 6:07:56 PM

These guys don't get paid during preseason do they??? That would put him in debt before he played his first NFL game. :-)

Attempted to define the word "sloat" in my websters dictionary and found no listing. Are there any openings on the editing staff of the observer?

Pretending to slash someones throat is totally cool with me because this is a mans game and zero impressionable youths were watching that game at all anyway. For Goodson's next TD run I think the whole team should get on it and have Goodson throw the switch and pretend everyone is dying of electrocution. That would surely make Goodson more of a man's man and not the sissy guy who just wants to win the game and not get a hit in the wallet.

Would you consider it a big deal if the throat was yours? Maybe being against NFL guidelines makes it a big deal. If you break the rules you pay the price!

Posted by: Richard | Aug 21, 2009 6:26:56 PM

it was wierd tho and uncalled for... didnt really have any significane in the moment...save that for a game sealing touchdown not a td scored when your allready down ten in a preseason game... dont know what dude was thinking...

Posted by: matt s | Aug 21, 2009 6:27:06 PM

No more FUMBLES and keep scoring those TDs!!! Fox will pick-up the tab.

There IS no editorial staff at the Observer. Budget cuts.

the one guy who thinks that a throat slask gesture is gangster is a bit-ch and has never physically competed. You're also the reason they give every kid a trophy, even the one's that suck. If you were guarding me and I was hitting jump shots left and right or I speared you coming through an A gap while I'm playing strong side LB, you're going to hear about it. It's competition, not gang related. Go play Wii you punk!!!

sorry you spell check morons...."slash"

Posted by: Pantherheels | Aug 21, 2009 7:09:23 PM

I,for one dont mind the "throat slashing" gesture. It lets the opposition know that they are done for.

It's b.s. that the nfl calls it as a penalty, even more so when it has multiple meanings.

Talk about No Fun League.

Posted by: Ghost of Sparta | Aug 21, 2009 7:42:07 PM

In the words of Chad Ochocinco, the NFL = "No Fun League."

For his next trick, Commish Goodell is going to outlaw celebrating in the stands too!

Such a dumb bunny. Scoreboard you little punk. Have some class and style. Go look at Jerry Rice tapes for a few hours and learn dummy!

Posted by: DumbBunny | Aug 21, 2009 8:17:21 PM

Only a complete idiot taunts and makes ridiculous gestures in the first pre-season game. What a moron. Cut this idiot now before he does real damage in a real game. I'm sick of thug players in a thug league charging enormous sums to watch this crap behavior. Grow up and act like an adult!

Posted by: Jack | Aug 21, 2009 8:44:52 PM

Good son gets a fine for being bad. Is that an NFL oxy MORON!

ANOTHER FUMBLE

Posted by: Terry Bradshaw | Aug 21, 2009 8:48:22 PM

Football is a violent sport, if you've never played it you wouldn't understand. To get the best of the opposing team or player is an accomplishment, so why not celebrate. Jerry Rice scored so much it became boring to him. If Mike had not been Black, would it have be considered gang related. Grow up Charlotte, this is the NFL, we need some rowdy players instead of the good little boys that we have. Thats why we have no respect in the league, we are not mean enough. Let them be football players, not nice little sunday school boys.I love the comment about the youth leagues, all getting trophies, at what point do you teach a child that awards are earned, not given.

Posted by: robray | Aug 21, 2009 8:51:15 PM

if you go back and watch the replay it wasn't even a throat slash....he did the whole flat of the hand across in front of his neck which universally means "cut it".....the throat slash is the the hand balled into a fist with just the thumb sticking out, then you draw your thumb across your neck while touching your neck....either way i could care less...u people do realize he wasn't actually slashing anybody's throat right?????

Hey richard are you stupid or dumb you said"
! The NFL needs to distance itself from this type of gangster stupidity unless it wants to sink to the level of the NBA. memo TO YOU THE nfl is 10 times worse than the nba with gangster, murders, dog killers, rapist..i don't think i hear anything like this from the NBA lately..football is just more of a popular sport thats all, and they are few more whites in football so you white guys can relate a little..but the nfl has more gangsters than tha NBA all day

Posted by: tim | Aug 21, 2009 9:48:19 PM

Oh, so now stupid embarrassing childish conduct is nothing but interpretive dance of gaiety? We should round up everyone who thinks that being a punk is OK, and slit all their throats in a mad dance of retribution. (public notice - the "Hitler was only Misunderstood" meeting has been changed from 7 to 8pm this Saturday night- Be sure to bring your long knives for the "Dance of the Fools" extravaganza).

Posted by: charlesbright | Aug 21, 2009 9:48:58 PM

Fact is, it was stupid. Then he says he regressed back to college days, but it's illegal in college, too.

He's a rook, he'll learn.

Posted by: Authority | Aug 21, 2009 9:59:06 PM

What is the big deal, you people talking about throat slashing, it isnt real dummies its some1 excited for scoring. Let them play & let them celebrate when they accomplish something, it makes them happy & a happy player is a good player.

Posted by: mrbernz | Aug 22, 2009 1:43:53 AM

Stupid move, rookie. Learn from it.
