Fox doesn't rule out #Panthers adding another QB

Panthers coach John Fox kept in play during his Monday news conference the possibility that the Panthers will bring in an other quarterback before practice resumes Wednesday.

He said he "wouldn't rule it out" until after he learns more about Josh McCown's availability for Sunday's game at Atlanta. McCown suffered knee and foot sprains in the Panthers' 38-10 season-opening loss to Philadelphia.

Fox said he wouldn't necessarily expect the Panthers to add a quarterback even if McCown can't play against the Falcons, noting that the team has gone into games with two quarterbacks before.

Among free agent quarterbacks available: Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese, A.J. Feeley and Joey Harrington.

Fox said Jake Delhomme remains the starting quarterback despite a five-turnover performance, which followed his six-turnover day in Carolina's 33-13 home playoff loss to Arizona in January.

When asked how secure is Delhomme's hold on the starting job, Fox said: "Probably like the security of all of us, day to day."

Fox noted that no one has a perfect day or game, just as Tiger Woods doesn't play perfectly in golf and Roger Federer isn't a perfect tennis player.

More coming from Fox's press conference.

DON'T EVEN COMPARE JAKE TO ONE OF THESE GREATS.....totally absurd.

the whole world knew he should not have been resigned to the team for what he got, not a team on the planet would've given him 20% of what the panthers did, we deserve to lose with that kind of business and football thinking.

I'm not jumping ONTO that sinking ship.

we may need to add a qb. no shit einstein. it's obvious were screwed. wait until the owner finds out someone gave jake a new guaranteed contract, when he was laid up and not involved in running the team. garcia is a winner on bad teams, imagine what he could do with the talent on this team.

They left Vinnie off the list.

What about JP Losman?

Someone is starting to feel the pressure. Hope it's not just hot air.

I say go after Griese...Garcia won't last much longer, and we don't run the west coast offense...he'll fail miserably.

Good thing we can take a QB with our first rounder in 2010 since it will be a top 3 pick.. Oh wait we traded that away to draft EVERETT BROWN in the 2nd round, BRILLIANT

I'm too stunned to comment more than to say that its obvious changes are in order. If your only weapon is Steve Smith and your QB has tunnel vision, what does it say for the whole team situation?

I have been saying this for two years now...JAKE needs to be GONE! So what if he has a few good games. It's a JOB and he has shown us time and time again he is INCOMPETENT!

McCown is a Joke. It's time for me!

Brian Brohm maybe.. why not just count this season as a loss... see what the Kid's got.. he could be a find.. he was highly rated comin out of college.. or trade for Chad Henne or Tavaris Jackson.. both may be able to play.. Gus Frerotte.. There are so many possibilities

Given Jake's performance during last years playoff game and yesterday's season opener, I'm still not giving up all hope for him. It is only the first game of the regular season and there is always room for improvement in all positions on the team. Regardless on what kind of team we have this year I will remain as I have from the very beginning, through good and bad games, a loyal Carolina Panther fan.

Please.....Brian highly rated coming out of college....How quickly we forget. Do U remember the name CARR? He too was highly rated coming out of college and look where that get us!
I say just give Moore a change I’ll pay to see him any day…

I feel like a broken record saying the same thing year after year after year..When are the Panthers or shall I say the people in charge going to realize that Jake is not this big time QB that they all keep wishing him to be..He's always been a horrible QB in pressure situations and its not going to change. Yeah, they've won some games, but Jake was ridding the recievers coat tails..He will be a good back-up but until the higher ups realize we need a real QB, we will continue to be disappointed.
From what I was told, thats why the two brother quit!! They wanted to get rid of Jake, and no one would listen..Can u blame them from walking out?
I can't...

Let's see how Jake does against Atlanta. If he's truly a leader, maybe he can get the O-line fired up to protect him. If he has another game like yesterday, then go with Matt Moore until you find something better.

Travarias Jackson for a 2011 1st rounder. That's something Fox and Hurney would do -- screw this team's future draft chances even more.

All these posts should remind yourselves why you work in a cubicle and not in professional sports....pathetic

You do not just let QBs that are worse give it a try....this is the first game of the season....go back to Arizona last year at this time and tell me what everyone was saying....I could keep going on but you guys / gals would not get it.

Fox is who needs to go. They are who call the plays. They are who sees that Jake is in a bad area and THEY keep letting him throw the ball. The Eagles defense was laughing at our offense...they knew what we were going to do. That is as much coaching as any player. They mandate Stewart gets carries when he has not played in over 8 months. They call 2 50 yard bomb plays to a 37 year old reciever that is there for slants.

Jake may need to go but you will never know without a whole new coach and philosphy. Fox WAS good but it is time to go...just like we have term limits on presidents. He has lost is motivational ability, coaching ability, and put us in a situation without draft picks...NO money and fans that hate their team.

Time to go

I know Garcia is a west coast offense QB but he would still give the Panthers a better chance to win than Delhomme. Garcia would be perfectly capable of taking the snap and handing the ball to DeAngelo or Stewart. If we need to throw the ball you just put him in the shot-gun and let him play ball. I know he shredded the Panthers defense plenty of times.

Jackson or Rosenfels can prob be had for a 4th or 5 rounder really...they both want out and can both play.. Jackson very mobile decent thrower, Rosenfels can sling it all over the park, but not a leader.. usually would only qualify a decent back up. Something has to be done.. My vote is for Tavaris Jackson

Posted by: Clay | Sep 14, 2009 2:08:36 PM

I've never really been a fan of Jake. He may be a nice buy but its been Smith and the rest of our receiving corps who have made Jake look even remotely good. I thought Weinke was a stronger QB than Jake so bring him back. I was actually shocked that Fox took him out of the game, guess the kitchen is getting pretty hot. Maybe that is what was needed, it worked for McNabb in Philly last year. Start Jake next week but the moment he turns the ball over he becomes the 3rd string QB and we look for another unless the remaining 2 step up and show something. We should sign another QB.

Clay, seriously, Tavaris Jackson? This guy is absolutely terrible. It took Gus Frerotte to salvage the Vikings season last year.
