Hurney: #Panthers put McCown on IR because wait was too long without vet QB backup
Here's general manager Marty Hurney's explanation for why the team decided to put backup quarterback Josh McCown on injured reserve. McCown suffered knee and foot injuries in Sunday's 38-10 loss to Philadelphia that could have kept him out up to six weeks.
Said Hurney: "It's going to be a length of time that we just feel like would be very difficult to go without another veteran quarterback on the roster."
Starter Jake Delhomme threw four interceptions and fumbled once in the loss to Philadelphia and was benched in favor of McCown with 4:24 remaining in the third period.
McCown's injury occurred early in the fourth quarter, and he was replaced by Matt Moore, who threw the team's fifth interception.
The Panthers plan to sign A.J. Feeley Tuesday after he arrives in town tonight. He figures to be thrust into the playbook and likely would be the first QB called up if something happens to Delhomme in Sunday's game at Atlanta.

This is an awkward situation facing the Panthers, a quarterback some of us believe wholeheartedly is finished, a veteran QB coming in who has to learn the system and probably play, and the 2nd most difficult schedule in the league. All of this says one thing to me. If Marty Hurney and the front office could not see this coming some heads should roll. Having seen how the Panthers operate this will probably not happen during the season but something should be done now to shack the team up and give everyone the notice this team means business and will do what has to be done to put a quality team on the field. They really seem to have problems looking for and finding a decent QB while others teams do not have that problem at all.

i thought matt moore played pretty well considering... he made a couple of really good throws. wonder why they keep bringing in career backups when we have a young guy (with upside) who needs experience if we ever plan to make him the starter....

Heads should be rolling anyways, how do you sign Jake to a 5 year extension after his meltdown in the playoffs, I'm all for a vote of confidence to try to settle him down but wasting money for someone that is finished is a very poor decision.

Hey, unless this O-line improves and I mean like DRAMATICALLY... it wouldn't matter if we had Dan Marino in his prime at QB. Didn't anybody else notice how many times blitzers came in UNTOUCHED?

i have a hard time understanding why marty hurney cant trade some picks and a player fpr derek anderson
Posted by: kevin | Sep 14, 2009 6:32:34 PM
I agree with John, the O-line got man handled over and over again and what looks like 2-3 seconds on TV was really like 0.5 seconds in Delhommes face, you try making accurate throws with that much time to think while a 250 pound linebacker flys at you. Though I'm all for a replacement, it's not going to happen anytime soon unless Jakes next 2-3 games are pathetic like the one against Philly. It's also Jakes/Fox's fault for not running shotgun formations even though you can clearly see the blitz coming straight through the A-gap (between the center and guard for you simple minded).

They would rather bring a proven Flunky who they will probably give more money to than Moore is making, as well I'm sure they did McCown, who knows zero about our offense.
Moore has shown potential since 07.
Lets do it The Fox and Hurney way "BASS AKWARDS"!!!!!

I completely agree John. Peyton Manning or Tom Brady couldn't have done much better with that much pressure in their faces. Delhomme, McCown and Moore had people hanging all over them on almost every play. Even on the passes that Delhomme did complete, he was doing everything he could to avoid getting killed. Oh and Delhomme haters here's a stat for you, Donovann Mcnabb is the only NFC QB to have won more games then Delhomme since 2002! Delhomme may not have the best technique or the most talent, but he pushes this team to win!
Basically, the problem is two-fold. 1st the line HAS to play MUCH better, and 2nd Fox needs to let Meeks blitz more. The Eagles showed all of us just how good a defense can be when people blitz. Our "conservative" defense is a joke.

Why in the world do you bring in a career back up that has shown nothing more than being a back up when you have a guy that needs to get in the game to see if he IS the guy or not? If they don't believe Matt Moore is at least as capable as AJ Freeny why did they bother keeping him. Heck, the practice guy can do as well as AJ so this just reeks of poor decision making on the coaching staff. Give MOORE a chance or let him get picked up by a team that will, I am sure other teams would!

RobNclt you're a moron. Jake is and will be our starting quarterback! John and I promise to love and protect Jake until death do us part.

Feeley seems like a lateral move from McCown.
Make no mistake about it Jake Delhomme is the quarterback for no other reason than his contract. They know that if the bench him then his career is over and they will be covering his guaranteed money. And forget about a trade with his contract. Hell he is so bad that he is a free agent in my fantasy football league. So they aren't going to just give up on him yet. Not just yet.
I agree with John. That offensive line pass blocking was horrific. Alot of that falls on Jake for not making reads and adjusting but it was still poor blocking.

Matt ur right we need to blitz more and so is kevin. why not trade some picks and get derek anderson a proven qb with a good arm.

Man imagine if we had done this in the off season, maybe there would have been an even better solution out there...

* sound of gum being chewed *
Jake gives us the best chance to win...
that's not a good chance, but
* more gum chewing *
IT IS WHAT IT IS!!!!!

Why dont they like Matt Moore?
Posted by: matt | Sep 14, 2009 6:52:20 PM
Unless we have a quarter back that can scramble, any quarterback put behind that offensive, and they are OFFENSIVE, line is in a world of trouble. The o-line got their butts kicked yesterday, plain and simple. And HOW stupid to keep your best running back in the game when the game was obviously way out of reach. I really hope they can turn it around, but I'm preparing for a long season. Ugh!!!!

Fire Hurney Now Please

Man Jeff just signed with of course the team who Jake help win the game yesterday the Eagles now I might get rip for this but hey its a idea why don't we call the Cardinals and offer a 2nd round pick plus on of are players or this year 2nd round pick plus next year 2nd round for Matt Lienart. Yes people I said a 2nd round pick even though we don't have a 1st round this year why? easy the Panthers FO said they won't draft a high draft pick on QB so Matt is a veteran been in the NFL for 3 or 4 years ,also don't forget we have a guy well a WR who is name Jarret who Matt know how to get the Ball to also other player like are TE, and if you people think the Cards won't do that trade you wrong the Cards coaching staff didn't even draft Matt and really don't like the guy they just waiting for another team to come ask for him, to bad those team have 1st round pick to take a chance on a QB so this is just something to look at. and by the way how old id AJ man it seem like he been in the NFL as long as Jake okay he probaly wasn't but long enough

Derek Anderson can't even win the Browns starting job, the fucking Browns you morons.
Posted by: Jody | Sep 14, 2009 7:27:45 PM
They dont like Matt Moore cause there in too deep and dont want to take the chance. They have been deflecting blame since got rid of Henning and then Turgovac and traded 1st round picks, Fox trying to save his ass the past 2yrs.

I think most of you would agree that Matt Moore played well enough in the preseason to at *least* secure the backup role. I've always thought of McCown ("l" begrudgingly withheld) as "Diet Delhomme," so losing him game me hope that Moore would finally get promoted.
If they put Feely, the 2ND QB off the street (McCown was handed the backup role his 1st day on the job), in front of Moore, then we're probably going to miss the boat on Moore. It was bad enough they pulled Vinnie the retired grandfather off the couch, and shafted Matt for the 1st time a few years ago (and I can only dream of how that season might have ended up if Moore got half a season to work with). What does this man have to do to earn a shot?!
Let's look at the Eagles from last year. I don't think many people would disagree that McNabb is a better QB than Jake. Reid benched McNabb when Donovan's play was getting really sloppy and disruptive to the offense's overall success. So McNabb sat a game (or maybe a game and a half; not sure). When he came back, he was sharp, and a lot more focused. My point in bringing this up is: would it kill Jake to sit him down for at least one game? If our philosophy is "ball control, power running game & play action," and all a QB is required to do in this system is "manage the game," then shouldn't we let Jake sit back and observe from a fresh perspective while we see what Moore can do? For Lombardi's sake, he's 2-1 as a starter! If he blows chunks, then we know he's not ready....but how will we know if we don't put him out there?! Hello? McFox? Anybody in there?
Posted by: Newsinz | Sep 14, 2009 7:39:56 PM
Jody...your point is....
Delhomme couldn't win a job here in the states and had to go overseas, then 3rd option down in NO, before getting an opportunity here.
Sure, the line didn't block well. They are all maulers, not pass blockers.
The play calling was WAY off...notice when the Panthers called Shotgun with Max Protect with the first play called for Matt Moore, he actually had a pcoket to step up and throw.
Defense, it didn't do well until they, GASP, started to blitz...by golly, we have an answer!

Trade what picks?
We don't have a first rounder next year, we gave it to 49ers for Everette Brown.
If thats a top ten pick, Hurney should be fired and would probably considering what that means our record would be
