Morrison says he couldn't turn down "extraordinary opportunity"

Danny Morrison said it would be an understatement to say he was surprised when Panthers team owner Jerry Richardson called over the weekend and told him about "an extraordinary opportunity."

In a telephone interview with the Observer this afternoon, Morrison said Richardson was initially sketchy about details, but then offered him the job of team president on Tuesday, after announcing the surprise resignation of sons Jon and Mark Richardson as team and stadium presidents, respectively.

Morrison, who has been Texas Christian's athletic director the past four years, said the Carolina job was one he simply couldn't pass up.

"It's one of those situations where you have a fabulous job already and an incredible opportuntiy to work with a first-class organization," said Morrison. "It's a great challenge to be able to compete in the NFL, which is the best (sports) brand in the world."

Morrison described Jerry Richardson as a personal mentor. They've had a close relationship for years, including when Morrison served as Wofford's athletics director in the mid-1990s when the Panthers first began competing in the NFL and holding training camp at the school in Spartanburg.

"We've had a pretty long relationship, really more from a mentoring standpoint," said Morrison. "You probably know Mr. Richardson is great about writing notes. Every year, it seemed I'd get about two or three notes from him when we did something well here at TCU -- and even before that."

Morrison, 55, said he expected to retire at TCU, but now enters an entirely new realm of athletics. In additon to being in charge of the Panthers' stadium and business operations, he'll represent the club in league matters.

"Mr. Richardson and I talked about that. I was straightforward with him that I haven't had NFL experience," said Morrison. "Obviously, I have a lot to learn. A positive factor is that there's a great staff already in place. It's nice going to an organization where things are already very well run.

"Hopefully, I can learn the Panther way of doing things and contribute in ways to make things even better."

In between his jobs at Wofford and TCU, Morrison served as commissioner of the Southern Conference.

"I've seen athletics from a lot of vantage points. Now I have the opportunity to see them from the vantage point of the very pinnacle of professional sports," he said.

Morrison said he'll likely begin work in his new job in late September after making sure he leaves things in order at TCU.

Uhhhh...OK.

Let's get this totally straight: Mark Richardson was doing such a great job that he can be replaced, on the fly, by a total NFL neophyte whose chief qualification seems to be that he ran a nice Wofford?

At this point does anyone else think the Big Cat has been in the catnip?

Jerry really seems to think the world begins and ends at his golf cart.

JAT...I second that....

I 3rd that

The rift between Mark and Jon must have been so disruptive that Jerry decided that he'd rather let a "rookie" run the organization than to continue suffering the sibling rivalry of his two sons. The relative suddenness of naming the successor leads me to believe that Jerry had etched this plan out some time ago before finally pulling the trigger. This is one less distraction the Panthers franchise has to worry about.

super catnip

Posted by: genep | Sep 2, 2009 3:49:10 PM

Lets not forget the qualifications of those who are being replaced:

1. Mark - played football at Clemson and........oh yeah, is a member of the lucky sperm club.

2. Jon - Collected trash in Chapel Hill and.......oh yeah, another member of the lucky sperm club.

Morrison has all the credentials that Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb never had, less the lucky sperm club membership. That means he got where he is on talent and intellect which is much more than be said for Mark and Jon.

Danny Morrison is an excellent choice! He has been very successful everywhere and in every endeavor! He has left all situations much better than he found them. This will not be an exception. Danny is a great leader with excellent organization skills.

As someone who knows nothing on how the Panthers organization is runned from the inside, it would appear to me from the outside looking in that "Daddy" Richardson wants to pull in the reins on how this team is being runned day to day? Just my thought! But that's the only way I can make logic of possibly forcing your sons out and bringing in someone who probably initially for all intents and purpose, will be a "Yes Guy". And that's not a knock on Danny Morrison, but he obvious looks up to Jerry and considers him a mentor, so I expect that he will be looking to Mr. Richardson for a lot of the decision making.

I think we should get Defensive Tackle from Redskins Anthony Montgomery. He is young and so Big 6'6 330 Pound just like Albert Haynesworth And would help up our Defensive so much. I think we should make a move Quickly and give 5Th Round or Third Round. This Trade as to happen so Fast. Panthers playing Four great Running Back in first Four game of Season--WEStbrooke, Tuner, Barber, and Clinton Portis.

C'mon haters (JAT), at least do your homework;

Morrison oversaw the development of TCU into one of the most successful college programs in the nation. During his four years at TCU, he helped usher the Horned Frogs into the Mountain West Conference. During the 2008-09 athletic season, TCU had 16 of its 20 sports represented in postseason play, finishing with the seventh ranked football team in the nation. A total of 12 sports were nationally ranked and four conference titles were won with three coaches receiving coach of the year honors. Five of the school's 20 programs were ranked in the top 11 in the nation.

As Commissioner of the Southern Conference, Morrison established numerous progressive initiatives, creating partnerships with corporate entities while expanding and enhancing the television schedule for the conference through various networks. "My business approach has been developed in large part from observing Mr. Richardson over the years," said Morrison, who first met him while playing basketball for Wofford. "It is a philosophy that I have come to trust. Mr. Richardson has emphasized the excellent staff and leadership in place throughout the organization, and I look forward to joining that team."

A native of Burlington, N.C., Morrison, 55, attended Wofford, where he lettered four years in basketball and graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics. He also obtained a Masters of Education in administration and supervision from the University of North Carolina in 1981 and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of South Carolina in 2000.

It occurs to me that Jerry Richardson, having created a NFL franchise out of nothing but a dream, is in a better position to make decisions regarding what is best for the Panthers than a bunch of negative commenters. I wish him well with his recovery and I also wish his team the best of luck in the coming football season.

Go Panthers

Kenneth Irving, I absolutely agree, but I think the reason for so much speculating is because of the timing and manner in which both sons stepped down without giving a great deal of insight on the decision...so people are left to wonder. Again, my comments were not a knock against Danny Morrison (actually seems like a great guy and administrator), but moreso an observation on my part. Maybe Jerry is the most capable family member in running the franchise and as opposed to having relations strained between himself and sons, this was best for the franchise.

Right on, Kenneth Irving!

There were two people in the catnip - Jon and Mark Richardson - and they couldn't even agree on how to share it. Everyone is just shocked because these guys seemingly had ultimate job security - but they weren't doing their jobs.
The fact that Jerry fired (or let them give "resignation") his own sons, which he obviously didn't take lightly, shows you that the Top Cat will only keep personnel who do the right things on and off the field - aka Fox, Hurney.
Hopefully this sends a message from the front office down to the cornerbacks - do your jobs or go elsewhere.
PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know, it's funny how you all (probably teachers and bank associates, sales people and restaurant managers know more about this than JRich-hahahaha. Get lost you homers and follow something else. Your words are complete wastes of time. Obviously the man is running one of the most successful franchises in all of sports so I think he can make the wise decision here to hire a hometown product with sports management knowledge. The old man made a great choice-Keep Poundin JRich-haters beware~~~~~

JAT = dumb. That is all.

hurney runs the team.big cat owns the team. morrison goes to nfl meetings and paperwork. he will never make a major decision. jerry ain't playing around. losing season and he cleans house.jon gruden was showing interest for the coaching job on the monday night panther preseason game when he said deangelo was the best back in the nfl.

Posted by: joe cool | Sep 2, 2009 6:02:14 PM

Hope he doesn't runned the team into the ground. At least he has runned a program before. I runned to the store on foot. Then I runned to the gym and runned on the treadmill.

Couple things. NFL.com is reporting Alfonso Boone run stopping DT is expected to sign with Panthers..anybody???? Also, Corey Williams got demoted in Cleveland and won't start. Wondering what it would take to get him. 4th or 5th and conditional 2011 pick? Hmmm....wonder if they could fit him under the cap??? Too bad Nate "I can't ever get on the field" Sally is taking up 1M in cap space!

Posted by: Jb | Sep 2, 2009 8:03:59 PM

Remember, this is Jerry's team. I think the boys might have forgotten that and started to think they had already inherited the team. ANYBODY that is brought in would be a YES man, because as I said, this is Jerry's team. Hopefully Mr. Morrison won't be afraid to present new ideas to Mr. Richardson, but when Jerry says "jump" the only question the other guy needs to ask is "how high?"

Posted by: ManInCharlotte | Sep 2, 2009 9:18:48 PM

You have to be kidding. I'm sure that Danny Morrison is a great guy and a good administrator at the college level. There are much more qualified candidates inside and outside the NFL. Running TCU and Wofford is not anything near managing an NFL franchise and it's stadium. Danny is going to have to go to the NFL 101 course to find the bathroom. Instead of having someone in here that knows the business and has the relationships with owners and the league. The job is too big for Danny. His words, "I have a lot to Learn", "I HAVE A LOT TO LEARN"!!!!! People!!! That's what I don't want to hear from the new president of our team.

Posted by: truth | Sep 2, 2009 10:08:06 PM

truth (and all you other freak outs), what is it that you think the team president does? He certainly does not manage the day to day functions of the team, now does he? Take your medicine and go to bed. Again, what is it that you think our team president does?

Posted by: Mills51 | Sep 3, 2009 12:08:10 AM

Mills you are all over the place. First it was Morrison is an outstanding high-achiever with a track record of success. Now it is team president is a do-nothing, empty-suit job anybody could do.

Which is it?

Again, why should we trust Jerry's judgment now if he kept Mark around so long?

Finally, Mills let's cut to the chase so we can see how tinted your glasses are. I say -- and I hate to but this is my head -- the Panthers go 6-10 this year -- what say ye?

Posted by: JAT | Sep 3, 2009 7:26:01 AM

Mr. Morrison does not/cannot block, tackle or plug up the middle. Therefore it really does not matter who is the front office guy. He just has to keep the BS away from Fox and Hurney and let them do their jobs.

Posted by: George | Sep 3, 2009 3:28:04 PM

I'm saying that he is an outstanding administrator and that's all he needs to be. The Panther's may go 6-10 this year as you say, but Mr. Morrison will have had no affect on that outcome.
