Munnerlyn expects to return punts, and other Wednesday p.m. notes
Rookie cornerback Captain Munnerlyn said he expects to be the Panthers' punt returner in Sunday's season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Munnerlyn said he was told before practice that he'll the role and that he got some repetitions catching punts.
The Panthers wanted to sign free agent Mark Jones, who filled the role last season, but he failed his physical exam. Jones likely will be signed after his hamstring injury recovers.
(x) Running back Jonathan Stewart and linebacker Jon Beason participated in practice and said they're set to play against the Eagles.
Stewart's practice was his first since Aug. 11. He was resting a sore Achilles. Beason bounced back quickly from an MCL sprain in his left knee.
(x) There were two number changes on the roster: Linebacker Dan Connor was switched from 57 to 55 and defensive end Hilee Taylor from 66 to 97.
(x) Wide receiver Charley Martin was added to the practice squad. He was with the San Diego Chargers in the preseason and played at West Texas A&M. He became the eighth and final member of the practice squad.
(x) Beason remarked on how hard running back Tyrell Sutton ran for the scout team against the first defense The Panthers claimed Sutton on waivers this week from Green Bay.

" that he'll the role "
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

I'm a Chargers fan and Charly Martin (yes, spelled Charly) is a poor man's Wes Welker. He had a good pre-season and I am glad he was able to be brought onto the Panther's practice squad. The kid can play.

Oh Captain, my Captain: hold onto the $#(%!^& ball! I want to see a "Captain Morgan" pose in the end zone at some point this year.

Man... dunno how i feel about connor taking 55... i really liked dan morgon he was one of my favorite players and he could have been one of the best if he had stayed healthy...25 tackles in the SB?? do i need to say any more... hopefully connor can come near his level of production and intesity while staying healthy when he is finally put in the starting lineup.

i knew stewart and beason would be ready, i say a heavy dose of double trouble the first game, don't make jake win the game, because we will loose the game..lets go panthers

sutton's highlights on youtube are pretty impressive...he elusive in the open field and has good speed but also isn't afraid to lower his head...now only if he could field some punts and kickoffs...

This is AWESOME news for Panther Nation! For some reason I feel like the guys are going to prove ALOT of the doubters wrong this year! Hopefully they'll stay off the wagon and make room for the believers!
GO PANTHERS!!!

hmm I wonder what the nay sayers are going to say know that we have all our boys back on the field
Posted by: charles | Sep 9, 2009 3:33:36 PM
The nay sayers are going to say the same things and we'll keep hoping that we're wrong. Jake is average, D-Line is garbage and FS and SS look to be in doubt. The schedule is tough and last year was smoke and mirrors with a soft schedule and several last second W's. 7-9 is what will happen but I hope we win them all.

I remember the same kind of negative talk last year...the schedule is too hard(remember opened out with San Diego and Chicago), the Panthers are too soft, and Jake sucks....keep on doubting because it seems like the cats play better when there is more doubt in the air...because as soon as we thought they were super bowl bound they let us down...but I hoping for a great season lets cheer em on guys!

Sounds like it's coming together. GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good news about Stewart and Beason. And yes Munnerlyn can be a real weapon for us in the return game if he learns how to hold onto the ball.

Csptain was always the scariest player on the field when he returned kicks for the Gamecocks...scariest player for both teams, that is. Seemed like he always either made a big return or lost the ball, rarely anything in between. I'll be holding my breath when he's got the ball, that's for sure!

*Captain. Whoops.
Posted by: Jim | Sep 9, 2009 4:13:32 PM
FYI Louis Leonard was 97 during the first preseason game, now 94. Also, Harris 77 and Sutton 22.

According to Panthers.com, the team captains are as follows:
Offense - Jake Delhomme and Jordan Gross. Defense - Jon Beason and Julius Peppers. Special Teams - John Kasay.
Are the teammates picking these guys, and if so, are they using a secret ballod? I smell conspiracy to justify wretched offseason contract extensions and signings (except for a couple of them, of course).

Ha. I love how Delhomme is average even though he's got one of the top-five winning percentages among active QBs and has more fourth-quarter comebacks than anybody in the league since he became a starter.

Of course they will let that post go through, and filter most of the rest of my post attempts...
Communist Capatalism at its finest! What's next, a so-called Universal health care plan where instead of taking tax payer's money and making hospitals free to the public, you force your citizens to give a percentage of their earnings (like it or not) to a middle man (such as AIG). Give me a break alredy!
Posted by: SYRPIS | Sep 9, 2009 4:41:07 PM
maybe not
Posted by: SYRPIS | Sep 9, 2009 4:42:02 PM
Procton you know why people say Jake's average. He's not flashy, definitely isn't one of the more physically talented QBs, and doesn't put up big passing numbers. And most people think we win in spite of Jake so the wins argument gets ignored when it probably shouldn't.
