#Panthers cut-down day observations

-- If there was any doubt the Panthers are serious about finding help at defensive tackle and (probably) punt returner, there's none now. After cutting 23 players and placing rookie DT Corvey Irvin on IR, they're at 51 players, so the decision on whom to cut to make room for two new guys has already been made.

-- They made room on the defensive line by putting Irvin on IR and cutting Marlon Favorite and George Hypolite. They're down to three DTs -- Damione Lewis, newcomer Louis Leonard and Nick Hayden. If there was a surprise in the cuts, it might have been Favorite being let go.

-- The pickings will probably pretty slim on Sunday's waivers list for DTs -- it will range from veterans like Shaun Smith (with a trouble-making reputation), cut by the Lions; to rookies like Terrance Taylor, the Colts' fourth-round draft pick last spring.

-- Makes sense for the Panthers to check out Mark Jones, who returned punts and kicks for them last season and was just cut by the Titans. Jones had hamstring problems in training camp, though, which might be a red flag.

-- They kept five defensive ends -- Julius Peppers, Tyler Brayton, Everette Brown, Charles Johnson and Hilee Taylor.

-- All of their rookie draft picks -- except Irvin -- made it. Offensive lineman Garry Williams is only the third undrafted rookie to make the team in coach John Fox's tenure with the Panthers.

-- Among those waived whom the Panthers would probably like to place on their squad (if they're not picked up by somebody else): LB Jeremy Leman and QB Hunter Cantwell. DE Casper Brinkley, another of Saturday's cuts, could be back for another stint on the practice squad. -- David Scott

Yep Shaun Smith cut by Lions, hopefully we can sign him.

Glad we kept Hilee Taylor he showed some flashes at the end of last season. With him and newcomer Evertte Brown maybe our pass rush will improve more even with Peppers.

Shaun Smith needs to be signed asap !

I have a hard time understanding how Landon Johnson makes this team over J Leman. All I remember seeing this preseason is Leman getting in the backfield and tackling the RB.

Is there any substantial DL help we can actually afford at a Peppers-induced cap friendly figure? Picking up retreads off practice squads is all well and good, but I would rather take a one-year flyer on a proven commodity. Problem is-the same guy complaining about no help (Peppers) is the same guy making it impossible for the Panthers to actually sign help.

thiers more dl out there just can't remember their names also waait and see what the Panthers going to do I don't know why we kept Landon Johnson not that hes bad but for money reason we could have get more cap space if we let him go will see.

Based on his track record, Shaun Smith might come in here and punch Jake in the face. No thanks.

Shaun Smith sounds like a sound move on face value, but we already had a superb DT (Kris Jenkins) who was so disruptive it ruined the defense. We don't need that act again, and that is Smith's reputation. The pickings are slim, but I'd trade before bringing in a troublemaker. I think they'll bring in two DTs and let Captain and Moore return punts (after learning how to catch the ball).

personally....being a panther's fan who's wife is from Detroit (therefore being FORCED to watch Detroit games) Shaun Smith is an amazing talent who was the only good thing on that defense. BRING HIM IN....i don't think he'll be disruptive on a good team. it's almost like Ron Artest in the NBA...if he isn't the best player on the team he'll fit right in. he is not TO in that regard. SIGN SMITH!!! PLEASE!!!

no way...jenkins in no way brought down the play of our defense...in fact his being traded and being unable to be replaced is what's killing our defense right now and at the end of last year....we don't need the guy to run for president just stop the run and don't get arrested(which he hasn't yet)

Shaun Smith might have a bad attitude, but playing for Detroit can do that to anyone. Maybe he'll be happier as a Panther - if he lasts until our #28 slot on the waiver wire.

I say we trade Peppers for a stud defensive tackle. Either Brown or Johnson could start at end. I mean Brown had at least 4 sacks in the preseason, and Peppers didn't do a thing. We could probably get a quality DT for Peppers. Peppers probably won't even stay in Carolina much longer, so why not go ahead and use him as trade bait to upgrade at a position that we drastically need help at right now!!

It would be worth it to sign if he'd punch Jake in the face. I'd pay to watch that.

we wouldn't have to wait to clear waivers for Smith. he has over 4 years of experience under his belt. he is an unrestricted free agent now.
and if we were to cut Landon Johnson, it would actually hurt our cap figure more. I agree, he's dead weight, but it's not worth the cap hit getting rid of a guy that doesn't suck. peace.

I love you people that just throw out trades like anything can just happen. One reason we couldn't trade Julius besides him being our best D Lineman.... he's making 16 million this year, no one could fit him in their cap at this point!!!

Posted by: Pisspot Pete | Sep 5, 2009 11:39:48 PM

i think a guaranteed starter spot is enough to make smitty wanna come here;)....he won't get paid great money here in year one but if he can work his butt off next year could be a great payday for him...and let's be honest he has the best chance at winning and being successful here.....

Maybe Smith is the guy we do need. Ruck and Jenks had some attitude and it fired up the team. It couldn't hurt to wake up these guys with a little mean streak on the DL. I have a feeling he will be OK on this team.

Sounds like some intelligent comments from some serious Panther fans! Thank god foxy is making the decisions and not these bright lights if you know what I mean cousin Eddie!

Posted by: pantherman | Sep 6, 2009 1:25:04 AM

Cousin Eddie here, get yourself something "real nice Clark" if you know what I mean!

Posted by: pantherman | Sep 6, 2009 1:33:16 AM

Shaun Smith, this guy is good, and we can work around his bad attitude. I would get frustrated up in Detroit to.

Posted by: williwonka | Sep 6, 2009 9:23:30 AM

I would much rather sign either Yamon Figurs or Dexter Jackson to be our kick returner. Both are young guys who can actually run as compared to Mark Jones.
