Fox weighing QB change, unsure about "status quo" with Delhomme

Panthers coach John Fox said today he still believes Jake Delhomme is the team’s best quarterback, but that doesn’t mean Delhomme will start Sunday against Arizona.

“The reality is we’re not operating very well there, and I don’t know if status quo is necessarily the answer or not,” he said.

One day after a painfully disappointing 20-9 loss to Buffalo, in which two of Delhomme’s three interceptions led to touchdowns by the Bills, Fox left wide open the door that he could make a switch to Matt Moore or A.J. Feeley.

“We definitely need to do whatever it takes to get better,” said Fox. “If that entails a quarterback change, that’s what it’ll entail.”

Fox acknowledged that the Panthers’ confidence in their passing game is waning.

“I don’t know that there’s a lot of confidence in that part of our offense, whether it’s by the offensive players or what-not,” he said.

“As an offense, your job is to score points. When you kind of travel quite a few yards and get no points, it doesn’t do a lot for your confidence. We have to get over that, plain and simple. Nobody’s going to come rescue us. We have to fix it. We’ll do the necessary things to do that to the best of our ability.”

Of Delhomme’s league-high 13 interceptions, two have been returned for touchdowns and five more have directly led to TDs by the opposition, including four that were returned to the Carolina 10-yard line or closer.

Fox was noncommittal about when he’d announce his decision, but he said he hadn’t arrived yet at what he plans to do.

Probably the earliest he’d make an announcement would be after practice Wednesday, after the Cardinals install the majority of their game plan. But Fox could wait until just before kickoff to reveal what he plans to do, primarily to keep Arizona guessing.

“I think there’s a competitive nature to that, and we’ll leave it at that,” he said.

The big question Fox faces is whether he has a valid option other than Delhomme.

He certainly would have if Josh McCown (31 career starts) wasn’t on injured reserve. Moore is in his third season and has made three starts. Feeley is a nine-year veteran with 15 starts, but clearly is best-suited to be a backup.

When asked about Moore, who’s been the No. 2 quarterback with Feeley No. 3 for the past five games, Fox said:

“He’s a young quarterback. He’s gotten some playing time, albeit not a lot lately. But he’s been in the offense. He understands the offense.

“The other guy, A.J. Feeley, has not been in the offense that long, albeit he’s been in the National Football League a little longer. Time will tell.”

START MATT MOORE FOR FVCKS SAKE!!

Posted by: FireFoxNow | Oct 26, 2009 2:22:08 PM

Feeley is best suited to be a backup? How is that any different from Jake? Moore needs to start now and the Panthers need to determine if he can do the job. If not something major needs to happen next year.

Oh and "Fox would certainly have a valid alternative if McCown wasn't hurt"? Lay off the crack, Charles. McCown is almost as bad as Delhomme

FoHurn banked their careers on Jake and Pep...and now all four will be gone soon.

Posted by: WhoCares | Oct 26, 2009 2:27:19 PM

WhoCares: I'd like to see Peppers stay, he's playing with a fire under his ass lately and I am really impressed with the defense overall this season. Jake's the only one who must go, Fox can stick around if he finally swallows his pride and benches Jake and starts Moore.

This season is shot. Might as well see if Matt Moore even deserves to be seen as a viable backup. Otherwise, next year will be just a repeat of this year.

Start Moore now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We want Moore!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: FireFox | Oct 26, 2009 2:37:53 PM

Jake sucks, always has always will. Yeah so what he took us to the super bowl. He didn't do that with his arm or accuracy. He did by handing the ball off. Same reason we went to the playoffs last year. He handed the ball off. This year is a tough schedule and you see what happened. We need a QB that can keep the defense honest. Most defenses come in a know Williams and Stewart are the only threats. stop them, you stop the panthers. Jake's play makes Steve Smith suck. He's a great receiver, but Jake's gay self makes him and the entire offense smell like something left in the toilet at a bad mexican resturant. Ship Jake off. CAN YOU BELIEVE THE ASSWIPES THAT RUN THIS ORGANIZATION GAVE THAT STUPID GUY A 5YEAR EXTENSION????? WHAT ARE THEY SMOKING? CRACK OR WHAT"S NEW IN CHARLOTTE....HEROIN. SHITTY ASS OWNERSHIP. GIVE ME $50,000 yearly and I'll QB this team and maybe, just maybe, we can get 4wins. Remember the shirts "Got Jake?"? Well you tell we have him.

Feeley has proven that he is a career backup, and let's not act like he is a young 32. Moore, although very raw, at least has a winning record as a starter. He goes 2-1 against three playoff teams in 2007, and has for some reason been in the doghouse since. Why can't we just see what he has? What is there to lose at this point? I too love the comment about McCown. Why is it that we always bring in turnover machines to backup Jake? See: David Carr, Josh McCown, AJ Feeley. Does anyone else see the irony in that?

Posted by: Stewart | Oct 26, 2009 2:52:50 PM

This QB list is horrible.....Fox literally screwed us over by handing the keys of the franchise over to Jake Delhomme. As if he was Tom Brady or Peyton Manning......
Let's just install the "Georgia Tech Wing T" offense and just run the whole game. It's not like we can be any worst offensively.

Has anyone checked on Jake's elbow? Better yet, has anyone checked to make sure Jake isn't colorblind? Perhaps the different colors of Carolina jerseys are confusing poor Jake. I mean, Arizona, Phiadelphia, Buffalo - he could be red/green colorblind.

Just to be sure, maybe Steve Smith could wear a Cardinals jersey in practice. I'm sure Jake wouldn't mind.

Obviously, changes are needed. Declare Moore the starter for the rest of the season and stick with him, no matter how things go, to see what we have. Drop the price tag on Peppers - if anyone offers a 1st round 2010 pick, take it, especially if it's an offer from a bad team. And get a new coach. Fox has done all he can here. I'm glad he brought us from 1-15 to mostly relevant, but it's time for a new voice.

Mike Shanahan.

Trust me, it kills me to say that. I was an Oakland Raiders fan my entire life before the Panthers started playing. Part of me still views the logos of the Broncos & Chiers as signs of the Antichrist. So hiring a longtime Bronco brings me some pains. But, other than last year, he was a winner almost his entire career in Denver and WON 2 Super Bowls. Let's give that a shot.

Moore definitely needs to get the shot, but lets be realistic and not forget that 2-1 record came against playoff teams who had already secured berths. Those teams were playing a lot of backups. Regardless, its not like our QB play can be much worse right now.

It is pretty sad that Tecmo Bowl for the Nintendo had more plays than the John Fox playbook. RB up the middle, Moose slant, Force it to Steve for INT.

Good to see they added one new play against Buffalo: Missed FG.

Of course I meant "logos of Broncos & Chiefs." Brain is faster than fingers. Kinda like Kenneth Moore.

Please keep Jake in as QB. Your #1 pick will be a Top 5 pick for us in the 2010 draft. Thanks for the trade!

Love,
Coach Singletary

Why wouldn't you bring in Matt Moore? The season is lost at this point and wouldn't you want to see if Matt Moore has anything to offer? At least you can see if the Panthers should draft a quarterback or not in next year's draft.

Posted by: Kevin | Oct 26, 2009 3:09:21 PM

Had a great day today.....I burned my Jake jersey today......maybe we should go get Vinny Testaverde or Chris Leak.....they are both 10 times better then anything we have now on the roster now!!!!!! maybe we can talk Boomer Esiason to come play for us...LOL

Posted by: Mark | Oct 26, 2009 3:13:35 PM

Clearly, the Panthers' offensive players need to work on their tackling technique.

Posted by: dogear | Oct 26, 2009 3:14:00 PM

If McNabb can be benched due to poor play why has it taken this long for Fox to even consider benching Jake? Take his job a way and force him to earn it back. That's called coaching.

Posted by: Ed | Oct 26, 2009 3:17:15 PM

Fox says he still believes Jake is his best quarterback. He should be FIRED for putting the organization in the predicament where a QB is playing pedestrian like is consider your best option. that's incompetence and VERY DANGEROUS for Mr.Richardson. He should be concerned that his product may be being untintentionally sabatoged.

Posted by: Sidney smith | Oct 26, 2009 3:25:19 PM

Jake shouldn't start again. This season is shot and it's time to see if you need 3 new qb's and not just 2. Give more a shot. I don't look for him to do well, but at least he is young and has an excuse to stink if he does.

Posted by: Wayne | Oct 26, 2009 3:29:01 PM

I think we should give Moore some time as the starter to get used to the offense just in case he HAS to be our long term starting QB into next season. Without a top draft pick coming up, we'll likely miss the marquee QB's in this strong class unless one falls to the early 2nd round (which is where it's looking like right now). So we may need to have Moore groomed to be our guy.

Plus, if Fox is here next season (and that's looking like a BIG if) we know that he doesn't like spending high picks on QBs... although we have got to find a dependable WR to play across from Smitty ASAP. The best route for that may be Free Agent or trade. I would say that Moose may retire after this atrocious season... which is a shame.

Posted by: appstategrad | Oct 26, 2009 3:29:40 PM

It doesn't matter what the panthers do. We had 7 draft picks and didn't draft not one receiver. Until we get another receiver the Panthers aren't going anywhere.......and they better hurry up Before we lose Smitty.

Posted by: Dherac | Oct 26, 2009 3:30:48 PM

McCown should even start in arena football. He is AWFUL and Fox is even dumber than I think if were to have put McCown in as the first back up.
