#Panthers' Smith: 'I'm no longer an asset'

Panthers receiver Steve Smith, who caught one pass for four yards against the Bucs on Sunday, said after the game: "I'm no longer an asset to this team."

Smith, who has six career 100-plus yard games against the Bucs, has 21 receptions this season for for 259 yards and no touchdowns this season.

Smith is regularly double teamed and the Panthers tried to get him the ball deep twice early in the game. His longest catch of the season has been a 28-yarder against Atlanta.

"Two guys are committed to him every play," said quarterback Jake Delhomme. "We try to take shot shots, but it's difficult." -- David Scott

fault

The reason he's not an asset, is because Jake Delhomme doesn't have the ability or intelligence to get the ball to him.

It's a shame we have a weapon like Smith that never gets taken out of the holster because we have an incompetent QB.

Smith, dont be hard on yourself, even though you dont get the ball youre still taking up 2 defenders, opening up other things even though Delhomme cant take advantage of it. One of these days the Panthers will get a decent QB then you will be able to show your value again.

Steve Smith is correct but it is no fault of his- Jake Delhomme is just an awful quarterback who has no business playing in the NFL. Smitty got open on two long plays in the 1st half and Jake overthrew him miserably both times; any decent qb would have hit on at least one of those pass plays. I am very tired of watching JD continually hurt this team- the coaching staff has got to realize that Jake will prevent any chance we have at making a run this season. Jake threw only 17 times today and managed to to throw 2 terrible interceptions- unbelievable! I have no hope for the Panthers b/c of Jake, regardless of the nice improvement in the run game and defense.

Fox likes to pontificate about how efficient Jake is as a QB-------as Fox said after the game, Jake is most efficient when he hands the ball off( i. e. the last drive). Sorry Smithy, "IT IS WHAT IT IS" !!!!

Wow with that comment coming from Smitty, its gonna be a LONGER season than I thought!!

Posted by: junipher | Oct 18, 2009 8:23:58 PM

Hello...Smitty aren't u like supposed to b the second best wide receiver in the NFL?? U r the mac...I don't care what anyone says. You all just need to get on the same page...who's really running this show anyway??

Posted by: Angel | Oct 18, 2009 8:24:52 PM

P.S. Thankyou Panthers for a victory over our Division loosers!!

Posted by: Angel | Oct 18, 2009 8:26:09 PM

The key is to figure out some new ways to get Smith the ball. It seems like the only play calls to him are the "smoke" route or a deep post. He needs work from the slot, some quick slants and reverses where he can use his shiftiness to get free.

Posted by: Tp | Oct 18, 2009 8:29:10 PM

Well people we knew this was coming! but honestly can we blame S. smith? I can't! I mean the reality is He's 100% right! he's a all pro 60 Million Dollar WR! In a offense who "wants" (key word) "Wants" to run the ball but are forced to run it more because they don't trust the QB! So after this season..Jake has to be out! (maybe sooner) or smitty will ask out! (and if I'm his agent) That would be the best move for him..

At least Smith caught the one Jake threw to him. Smith did not take a cheap shot at an opposing player either like another Panther did, effectively ousting himself and a Buc starter from the game. That was as low a blow, cheap, and poor a hit as I've seen in 20 years, if not more. Hits like that put people out of the game forever. I hope the NFL fines and suspends him. Smith will get his due when Jake comes too, they get another qB, or when Steve gets onto antoerh NFL team.

very troubling comment, but not unexpected. when steve is lined up on the left, jake doesn't even turn his head to look his way. if i was smith, i'd be plenty frustrated, especially since i'm not getting any younger. we don't have a quarterback who can get the ball to steve in double coverage and let him showcase his skills, so he will opt to leave the panthers, and who can blame him.

Steve that is because our bone headed coach has receivers and tight ends just above the lawn maintainence people as far as priority for this organization.

Does anyone in North or South Carolina other than John Fox believe that Dewayne Jarrett is worth a darn? That he'd make another NFL team anywhere? That he should have been picked BEFORE his teammate the other Stee Smith?Does his career slightly parallel the marvelous career of Eric Sheldon?

I would demand to be traded if I was Steve and go somewhere where the quarterback isn't just a nice guy but a fine NFL quarterback who isn't leading the league in interceptions and turnoers.

Jake is done and we all see it but Fox.

I don't know how this team can continue the season with a QB that limits the team this way. Against just about any other team in the league they would've lost today, save the Redskins, Rams, or the Chiefs.

When one of the top three recievers in the entire nfl does not get a reception until six minutes left in the 4th quarter....THERE IS A MAJOR PROBLEM...and stop giving the "he's always doubled" bullshit...you don't think T.O. and Braylan Edwards and Randy Moss get doubled as well !!!! Like Smitty said earlier in the season when he was suposedly joking..."I love you as a person but not as a qb ".....we need to draft a QB plain and simple or get Jeff Garcia....he would be better than Jake...he really tried to give the game away today too....to an 0-5 team !

Posted by: Elliot | Oct 18, 2009 8:38:11 PM

Hey Steve, you need to sucker punch Jake. Get ready to play elsewhere when your contract is up. As long as Fox is the coach, Jake will remain the qb and you will not get the ball.

Posted by: Glo | Oct 18, 2009 8:38:36 PM

Yep this is the Fox/Hurney idiocy. Ya see they always get rid of good players..like Ricky Manning Jr. to name one. Steve Smith is next. They got "Double Trouble" and trying to build the team around them and when it comes to the passing game it sucks because they are using Moose and Smitty as blockers.
Jake is finished but that's ok--they give him a fortune while he is the worse QB in the NFL. Sit back folks while Jake, Fox, Hurney and Richardson destroy good players.

I was always a Jake defender but no longer. Enough is enough. I believe Jake should have taken another year out. I believe he was hurting a year before surgery and came back too soon and is now unable to perfect his game and he is too selfish to say so. He will play bad rather than care about the team. Best of all who's stupid idea was it to give him that big raise as bad as he was playing??who I ask? The bad year has begun and they will never recoup.

Best player on this team - hands down! This guy is a beast - works his ass off and is never around. He should be in the slot every 3-4 offensive plays and running all obver the field. You beat double coverage by moving it around and keeping the defense shifting. I hate it that you have a beast in Peppers and another one in Smith and these guys are so underused it's crazy. MADDENING CRAZY.

Posted by: Kevin | Oct 18, 2009 8:48:30 PM

Mac: Ricky Manning Jr? You mean the same Ricky Manning Jr who picked up a couple of assault charges and is currently playing in the illustrious UFL? The same one who signed a $21 million offer sheet with the Bears back in the day? Gimme a break. If the Panthers still had him, you'd probably be complaining about overpaying a terrible cornerback.

Posted by: Justin | Oct 18, 2009 8:54:22 PM

Smith was at his best going deep and fighting for the ball down field. Unfortunately, Jake can't throw the deep ball anymore. We need to play Moore, he can throw the deep ball. Run, run, then run some more, and when the opposing defense plays 8 in the box, go up top to Smith for the big play.

Posted by: Ghoul | Oct 18, 2009 8:58:43 PM

Trade him now while he has value. Patriots have been doing it for years...cut them a few years early rather than a few year slate. He deserves to go to someone else and we need to draft a qb for the future. I guarantee there would be plenty of suitors willing to give up a couple of 1st rounders for him

Posted by: Obsrevenge | Oct 18, 2009 9:04:56 PM

John Fox can continue to defend the human turnover Jake Delhomme all he wants, but the fact of the matter is, if all that we need is a QB that can turn and hand the ball off, let Matt Moore play. If all that we need is 17 pass attempts out of our QB, let Matt Moore play.

It continues to baffle the mind how Fox can continue to defend Jake with a straight face after every game.

Posted by: heelatious | Oct 18, 2009 9:06:28 PM

I feel bad for Smith and Jake both. Steve needs someone to get him the ball in the way that he does it best.
I feel bad for Jake because I know that he really wants to get Steve the ball, but his throws just are not what they once were. Jake's deep ball are floaters that make downfield, but take forever to get there. There is a lack of a spiral on those deep throws, and to make up for it he overthrows the receiver in hopes that they can catch up to it.
Weather or not Jake can still get it done, is getting clearer by each game.
