QB change? Fox leaves the door open to replace Delhomme

For the first time tonight, Panthers coach John Fox didn’t follow a subpar performance by quarterback Jake Delhomme with a commitment to keeping him as the starter.

“Like all positions, we’ll evaluate it and whatever changes we need to make, we’ll make,” Fox said after Carolina lost to Buffalo 20-9 to fall to 2-4 on the season.

Pressed further on whether he’d replace Delhomme with Matt Moore or A.J. Feeley for next week’s game at Arizona, Fox said: “We just got off the field and have not evaluated the thing. I think he played the whole game. I think we moved the ball effectively. The turnovers were critical.”

Delhomme threw three interceptions, including two overthrows that rookie safety Jairus Byrd picked off and returned to the Carolina 7 and 27, respectively, to set up Buffalo's only touchdowns.

Carolina lost despite outgaining the Bills in total yardage 425-167 and topping them in first downs 20-9 -- ironically, the flip-flop opposite of the final score.

Delhomme said, in his heart, he’d like to believe he’s done enough to keep the job, but he understands that may not be the case.

“Let’s be honest -- I don’t think I’m a dummy -- when you’re not playing well offensively, you always have to look at the quarterback,” said Delhomme.

“I’m certainly not looking to give it up by any stretch of the imagination. But let’s be real here. Two big turnovers today really affected us.”

Delhomme described the loss as “disappointing, just crushing” and added: “Usually, I’m not too much at a loss for words, (but) I’m almost numb.”

Delhomme leads the NFL with 13 interceptions. Opponents have returned two of them for touchdowns and five more have directly led to TDs.

Left tackle Jordan Gross went into full protect-Jake mode in the locker room, pledging allegiance to Delhomme, who also threw five interceptions in the Panthers' playoff loss last season to the Cardinals.

“I went up to him at the end there and said he's our guy," said Gross. "He's won too many games here. We've been down the road of the quarterback shuffle a few years ago (2007, when Delhomme missed the final 13 games with an elbow injury) and that didn't work out too well. There's a lot of time to evaluate quarterbacks from the spring all the way through camp. It's not like there's some magic, hidden gem.

"I’ve got faith in our backups, but (making a change) seems like a break-glass-and-pull-the-handle type of thing if you do that. That’s not my call. But Jake’s my guy. I have faith in him.”

Jake starts next week. Fox will be sure Feeley jumps Moore on the depth chart though....he can't eat crow and have Moore come out and look good.

Fox and Davidson should be fired tonight. Let Meeks run the team the rest of the year, and let old man Richard Williamson call the offense.

God knows that Matt Moore will come out and throw a 25 yard pass on the first play to Muhammad like he did in the game against the Eagles...

Posted by: Cameron | Oct 25, 2009 10:02:27 PM

Doesnt matter who they start. They have bad play calling and they are destined to lose.

fire fox and replace him with meeks is a great idea.I get a bad feeling jake gets replaced by feeley and moore gets passed over, then fox brings back jake. if moore is not first up fox should be fired asap.fox not playing moore is nothing but stubborn pride. next coach whoever he is will look like a genius and will make only one roster move, cut jake and put in anybody at qb. this team is loaded with talent.

Why start or play Feeley over Moore? Moore showed promise as a ROOKIE in 2007 with a less-talented offensive line than our current one. Feeley has already determined what he is in the NFL: a journeyman third stringer (he had his shot as a starter in Miami 5 years ago and flopped). Moore has more upside as he is young and could become the franchise QB if things go well. I would rather see Jake come back than Feeley start, well maybe not.

I have an idea, tell Gross his paycheck will now be cut in half for every loss and see if he still wants Jake as QB. This is business nothing personal, friends don't equal wins.

If Jake starts they should charge him for every interception 100,000. And when the defense gives up touchdowns they should charge each player 100,000. I bet they wont lose another game

wow I got every winner right this week except for the Panthers-Bills game...LMAO....this season is lost and hopefully so is John Fox career with the Panthers...sorry John, it just isn't happening anymore..thanks for the goodtimes, it was fun while it lasted....

Why was Kenny Moore in there to return that punt? Seriously, Munnerlyn had returned all of the punts before then. Why all of the sudden put someone in there to return punts who is not used to returning them? Fox is a freakin idiot. Please fire him!!!

Either Jake needs to be replaced, or Fox. Maybe both. Replacements should have been made over a month ago. We are PSL owners, have attended the games from the beginning, and are ashamed to make the Panthers our "picks" on Turbo Tourneys (so we DON'T).

“I’m certainly not looking to give it up by any stretch of the imagination. But let’s be real here. Two big turnovers today really affected us." -Jake Delhomme.... DUH JAKE!!! I wonder who had those turnovers... hmm. Can I take a guess? Was it you? DING DING! Now for me to say the missed field goals, and the muffed punt didn't kill us would be lying, but goodness the QB play's got to get better before we can win any more games against anyone else this year (SERIOUSLY: if you think we can beat even Tampa Bay again, you're fooling yourself after today)

Jake has played horrible this season, but why in the world did we try to pass so much? The Arizona rush d is the worst in the league, and we were never down by more than 2 tds. Fox is supposed to be all about running, but whenever we get down by any amount of points Fox's dumbass panics and does nothing but pass. He knows we have two great RBs and 1 struggling QB but he puts the ball in Jake's hands all of the time. Fox is a Moron and MUST go. Jake is a problem, but Fox is the biggest problem!

Posted by: Matt | Oct 25, 2009 10:46:05 PM

Matt Moore is my nigga. Put him in.

Posted by: Brad | Oct 25, 2009 10:46:37 PM

Give Matt Moore the goddamn ball! How can things get any worse in the passing game? Jake is done, it happens to every player. We have got to move on, and the sooner the fucking better.

Fire Fox (is that a film?) Clint for coach?
Really now.
Fox he just has not got what the Panthers need. Fox is terrible and Davidson, ahhhhh
Jake is a nice guy but nice guys don't win. Jake its time to go and go NOW.
Feeley, OMG NO
Moore please help us all.
The season is gone so lets try new people look to 2010 / 2011

The play calling is B.S because of Jake

Some people dont see that at all

Posted by: jake the snake | Oct 25, 2009 11:13:33 PM

Duh Fox, yes the turnovers killed us! But, you moron, your playcalling prompted and has prompted a lot of those turnovers. Take some blame for your own stupidity this year and do SOMETHING to get this team moving in the right direction instead of having the same run it up the middle gameplan week after week. Today was humiliating as a fan. Your days are numbered and your pink slip cannot come soon enough.

After watching Kyle Orton and Jake this year, I'm more impressed with McCoy. Fire the new qb coach. It's obvious he stinks.
Rip Rip.

what about Jeff Garcia? Is he still around and available? He beat us a couple times with Philly when McNabb was hurt, those were better Panther teams than we have now.

Posted by: Dave Kiefer | Oct 25, 2009 11:39:59 PM

I've been watching Jake's throwing mechanics and it's clear to me his accuracy is gone! Many of his passes sail on him, get tipped and intercepted.....it's time to finally admit that and move on!

Fox has a long history of refusing to sit down players who can no longer do their jobs. Here a just a few examples -
DeShaun Foster - Remember, Fox actually played him in front of Williams.
Keary Colbert - kept this guy way longer than we should have.
Dan Morgan - Year after year we let this guy come back.
Mike Rucker - Great guy, but he was done before his serious knee injury, but Fox kept him even after the injury.
Mike Minter - Fox kept him around until Minter himself finally knew it was time to leave.
Chris Weinke - Kept this guy as a backup even though he was so bad we actually played a game by creating an offense with no QB.
The list goes on and now you can add Jake, he's thrown 13 interceptions in 6 games, so he's on pace to throw 34, plus he fumbles a lot, not a sigle Wide Out has caught a TD, and the team is 2-4, yet Fox still refuses to say a change is needed.
Either Fox is an idiot or he believes that Moore is even worst and if that's the case, then Fox is a fool for having Moore on the team.

Jake has made misstakes because he is afraid he is going to loose his job and I think he is trying too hard. He needs to be out of a few games and give the other QB
a chance to save the Panther team this year.I also think that Fox needs to step down..he is to soft with the guys. Lets get a coach that puts his foot down and tells them like it is....We have a good team they just need to get it together. That is where the coach comes in. So let's try a new coach and QB and just see what happens..can not be any worst then it is now...I WANT A SUPPER BOWEL WIN.
