Davis loss a big blow to Panthers' defense
This was the breakout year the Panthers had been waiting to see from Thomas Davis ever since they picked in the first round of the 2005 NFL draft.
Finally comfortable at the linebacker position and clearly an excellent fit for the new scheme installed by defensive coordinator Ron Meeks, Davis was playing fast and free this season.
There's no doubt he was having a Pro Bowl year before getting injured in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 30-20 loss at New Orleans.
The news this afternoon confirmed the team's fears at the time of the injury: Davis tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and is out for the season.
That's a huge blow to Panthers defense that's been fast-improving since struggling in the first three games. At the midway point of the season, Carolina ranks ninth in the NFL in total defense.
Davis ranked second on the team in tackles with 69 -- unofficially because the updated, official tackle totals based on coaches' tape review won't be available until later this week.
Davis and middle linebacker Jon Beason gave the Panthers an outside-inside linebacking duo that was as fast and talented as any in the NFL.
Now, Davis will be replaced by Landon Johnson, who has plenty of starting experience with the Cincinnati Bengals, but isn't nearly as dominant as Davis.
The timing of the injury comes just as Davis was getting poised to earn a big payday. He's in the final year of his contract. The Panthers almost certainly will still try to re-sign him.
Earlier this afternoon, coach John Fox was still awaiting final test results on Davis, but clearly had concern that the injury could be serious.
"I feel bad for the young man because he's put a lot into it," said Fox. "He was playing at a high level. It's unfortunate. I feel bad for him and his family.
"He's a tough-minded guy. ... I know he'll deal with it in the right manner."

This is awful news. Get better Davis, you are young. Be strong and get better. Next year will be a little better. We have a good defense, we just need a receiver and a quarterback with experience. Everything will be fine.

definitley a huge blow to our D. not only this year, but players often have trouble recovering from torn ACLs. we seriously need to fire whoever is in charge of conditioning and keeping our players healthy. it seems all our players, good or bad, are getting hurt. godfrey, beason, davis, kemo, stewart, muhammed, rosario, mccown, hoover, diggs, fiametta, even williams has had to go out at times...

Get better Davis, we will need you next year!

I think I've already said every explicative word that comes to mind. We need Davis probably more than anybody else on the team. But, unlike previous years, Fox can't blame injuries on the team not winning. Thats why you have 53 men on your roster, and not 22.
Countdown till the Fox Firing--->8 games

oh crap!

I knew it was his ACL the second he went down. I'm no doctor but usually when players go down without any contact like he did its the ACL. Gotta feel bad for TD, he was having an amazing year. Who knows what our record would be right now if we didn't have him flying around the field these first 8 games.
Seems like the Panthers are just perpetually cursed by injuries. We're one of the top teams in the NFL when healthy but we almost never are. At least not in consecutive years, which explains why we've never made the playoffs in consecutive seasons. I guess that's a good thing in the sense that based on our history we should have an injury-free, playoff season next year, but it still hurts that this season appears to be over at the halfway point.

Josh, our conditioning staff shouldn't be fired at all. They are consistently rated as one of the best in the NFL, but they can't make the players condition themselves. Injuries happen. It's not a specific persons fault.
Also, ACL injuries are definitely recoverable with the right surgery and rehab. I just tore my ACL not too long ago, and with the regiment I'm on, I've been able to walk with little pain in three weeks. I bet T.D. will be alright.

Nice. What's next?

My prayers go out to T.D. for a speedy recovery.I hate to say this ,but with T.D. healthy or not ,they wont win with Fox and Delhomme .One's too conservative and the other has no confidence. The o-line can run block, but they stink at pass blocking.

The Panthers are gonna be ok, theyre a really good team they just need a qb. & Even with Delhomme at qb, theyre gonna win at least 3 more games this season, hopefully more. After seeing how well they played against whats probably the best, or at least second best team of the year i seen they can do what they have to to win against average teams.

If the Panthers lose to Atlanta on Sunday, it's time for them to find out what their younger players can do. Special attention needs to be payed to the QB and WR positions.Jake is a decent guy but we need a QB that is mobile, accurate and confident.
