Delhomme: 'Possess and protect'

Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme has a simple recipe for beating the unbeaten New Orleans Saints.

“Possessing the ball and protecting the ball is … paramount,” said Delhomme.

The Panthers (3-4) face the Saints (7-0) Sunday in New Orleans’ Superdome. The Saints, with the league’s top-ranked offense and an opportunistic defense, are one of league’s two remaining undefeated teams (with the Indianapolis Colts).

Delhomme thinks the Panthers are capable of an upset, especially if they can stick to his formula. Carolina, which has won three of four, opened its victory against the Arizona Cardinals last week with a 15-play drive that produced a touchdown. The Panthers scored their winning points in a victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier this season after a 16-play drive.

And Carolina’s victory against Arizona also came without an offensive turnover.

The Saints’ defense has scored six touchdowns this season (more than the Cleveland Browns’ offense, which has produced five). Veteran safety Darren Sharper has seven interceptions and has turned three of them into touchdowns.

“He’s not slowing down,” Delhomme said of Sharper, 34, who is in his first season with the Saints after 12 years with the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings. “He lines up on the line of scrimmage, then a second-and-a-half later, he’s 20 yards downfield. He’s covering half the field.”

Delhomme, who left the Cardinals game with a bruised chest, said he felt fine Wednesday. -- David Scott

I think some of these vocal fans have given up the ship are so negative. They harp on Jake and these same people were the ones that said that Peppers was a money grabbing bum. Oh nobody can throw 5 interceptions a game. didn't Pro Bowler Kurt Warner do that?
Isn't Eli throwing his fair share. I heard someone comment that although Jarret caught a pass his moves on that play showed he is not a threat for opossing defenses. Heck he made a play at a clutch time.Come on guys support the team or move on. Take up knitting or bingo.

If jake sticks with the short pass which seems to be his game right now, our running game can take it from there. Manning and Brady make a living on the short pass why not Jake. Long pass are high risk and that seemed to be all Davidson gave jake. last game was mostly short passes and he did very well in the completion percentages. Stick with the formula and keep running even if you are behind.

Smitty needs to be put in motion, lined up in the slot, and even put him in the wildcat. Imagine Smitty getting the snap with D Will in motion with Stewart in the backfield beside him. We need to be more creative with getting him the ball!

Protect the ball and run it.
