First Quarter Update: Panthers 14, Saints 0
The Panthers got off to a fast start against the unbeaten Saints, taking a two-touchdown lead in the first quarter. However, New Orleans was driving and at the Carolina 5 as the period ended.
Carolina score on its second play from scrimmage when DeAngelo Williams broke free for a 66-yard touchdown run one minute into the game. He ran up the middle, got into the open, and easily outran the Saints defense down the right side of the field.
Midway through the period, Williams scored again on a 7-yard run after a turnover gave Carolina the ball at the New Orleans 11. Saints quarterback Drew Brees fumbled when he was sacked from behind by Tyler Brayton. Jon Beason recovered for the Panthers to set up the Williams TD.
As the period ended, the Saints had drive from their 21 to the Carolina 5 and appeared ready to score.
