Panthers' pass-defense ranking tumbles

All it took was a big-play filled, 330-yard passing game by the Saints' Drew Brees to send the Panthers' pass-defense ranking from No. 1 in the NFL to No. 7 through Sunday's games. Carolina, which had been ranked atop the league in that stat for two weeks, now allows 181.8 yards per game.

DeAngelo Williams is fifth in the league in rushing through Sunday with 768 yards. Only league-leader Chris Johnson of Tennessee (959) has a higher per-carry average among the top 10 rushers than Williams. Johnson averages 6.7 per rush; Williams 5.2.

The Panthers' rushing offense, however, is up to third in the league after gaining 182 yards on the ground against New Orleans. Carolina averages 153.0 yards per game.

The Panthers still rank 32nd (last) in the league in kick-return coverage (30.7 yards). The Panthers did hold the Saints to an average of 21.7 yards on three returns Sunday.

Although Jake Delhomme hasn't thrown an interception in the last two games, his 13 for the season still lead the NFL. Detroit's Matthew Stafford and Chicago's Jay Cutler (both with 12) are gaining fast, though.

Carolina has also climbed out of the league's cellar in turnover ratio (minus 9). The Panthers are tied with Oakland at 30th, ahead of only Cleveland (minus 11). Carolina was minus-one in the department against the Saints, losing three fumbles, but picking off Brees once and recovering a fumble of his. -- David Scott

O how I would love to plug Fox

It wasn't D. Williams fumble that sank the Panthers, it was their pathetic play calling! The Panthers were marching down the field in a short series of plays with plenty of time on the clock and ist and 10, when Jake decides, or rather Fox, decides to go for a bomb that was nowhere near Steve Smith. Why not continue the short steps. At least a field goal would have tied the game and perhaps win in OT. As long as Jake and John Fox are at the helm, I refuse to watch their stupid games again.

I will refuse to miss another Panthers game as long as they continue to play well. If only the turnovers would stop and this game it was the fault of both RB's. It's that kind of year but I still love the Panthers!!!

most panther fans suck.

DeAngelo made two crucial mistakes that cost us the game. Steve Smith stopped running which is why Jakes pass was nowhere near him. Dwayne had an opportunity to make a huge play and he flopped. Jake played really well and managed the game with what he was given. Those few plays cost us the game. For once it wasn't Delhomme. WE can bounce back though. I am calling for a 9 and 7 record! Possibly 10 and 6 if we get on fire!

poooooooooor play calling in the 2nd half sh*** now fox you have to stop with dumb play calling when your team is moveing the chanes and you want to go deep instead of running the ball for atleast to try and tie the game, fox you guys really let this one slip away,so dont blame william for that fumble at their goal line it was the dumb play calling earlier

I am pulling for 9 and 7 or 10 and 6 as well, which is what i said at the beginning of the year but losing Thomas Davis is a big lost. Jake did not lose this one, but the team is strong and should pick themselves up. If we can beat atlanta, we may be okay.

no way were 9-7 this year. retarded thought.

Matt, that's disgusting. Please keep it clean and keep your perversions to yourself. And where were you jokers complaining about conservative play calling last week, when that rushing attack was rippin' em a new one?? Yeah, some Panther fans are lame "humanoids." Their reality is whatever chuck and his cohorts report, and nothing else beyond that. What tragic joke.

BTW, The Golden Biscuit Eater did have a costly turnover that game. It was his limited participation that made his mistakes look minimal. Nice try Chucky.

We should just draft the Navy QB and run the triple option. We mize well, we run the ball every play...
