Panthers promote LB Kelvin Smith from practice squad to fill Davis' spot

The Panthers have signed linebacker Kelvin Smith from their practice squad to fill the spot on their 53-man roster vacated by linebacker Thomas Davis, who was placed on injured reserve due to his season-ending ACL injury.

Smith played in four games for the Miami Dolphins in 2007.

Why dont they go get Jeremy Leman. He was a beast in camp but has since went to phil, and is now on san diego practice squad as of 11/3. Whats the knock on the guy. He was great here this summer

Why are we discussing Jake Delhomme on a post dedicated to dealing with the Davis injury??????

Jay has good points, but not the best use of language to express his thoughts! I do agree though that Jerry Richardson needs to get off his hands and do something ala the Tennessee Titans owner. It's okay to intervene when you have your own money, interest and effort invested into the team. At some point, Jerry and the fans are going to wake up and demand better results. I'm already on that ship waiting for the Big Cat and others to join me.

No chance that Kelvin starts - Landon Johnson or James Anderson are first in line.

why would jerry richardson be concerned when he already knows the outcome. if the plan is and has been replacing fox after this season why would he intervene now? My guess, when Jerry and Fox had "the meeting" awhile back, he told him what the deal was, win or your out. Last year was it, right now, jerry is just keeping fox until the coach he wants is ready/available.

Has that been the plan?

Obviously Thomas Davis is one of our best LBs (I think the best Weakside LB in the league at this moment) but also I think that our depth at this position its very good and I think that Anderson, Connor or Johnson will make a very good job at the position, only remember Anderson's and Leman preseason, both looks like a playmakers!!!

Posted by: Rock | Nov 10, 2009 6:47:07 PM

I vote Jeremy Leman. The guy rocked the preseason head and shoulders above any of the practic squad guys.

I think Jerry is a business man. I dont think he would allow season to whither on the vine. He looses seats in the stands he looses money. he is not purposefully sinking the team to get anyone out. If he wants him out he will fire him.

Posted by: MBPantfan | Nov 10, 2009 7:21:39 PM

He fired his kids just before the season. He is patient but hard core.

Offense is too conservative. Simple as that

AMEN, JAY!!! Dir3ect, vulgar, accuarte, and politically incorrect! ALL GREAT QUALITIES!!! I LOVE IT!!!

Posted by: Scott | Nov 10, 2009 8:46:37 PM

Mr. Richardson is a terrific man, great for this city. As a businessman, he is good. Dennys? Made a bunch of money for him, you eat there? Hardees? You eat there? Either of those places winners?

He sells a product and face it, the PSL's paid for his stadium. He paid 200 million for a team valued at 1 billion with a free stadium. Good businessman.

He never talks to the media or tha fans via the media. His stadium seats are full every week because of all the transplants. The Panthers are winning the seat owners are there. The Panthers are losing, the out of town residents from wherever the opponent is from fill the seats, park the cars, eat the hot dogs and drink the beer. He makes the same regardless of how the team does. Why else would he tolerate Fox's yo yo record. Has never had two winning seasons in a row.

Do not confuse a great man with a good business nose as someone who wants to win. He wants to make money and does so either way.

Hey Jay, I did all that, as have all the other posts, with a real vocabulary, not potty mouth.

To cmo at 8:58. He "tolerates Fox's yo yo record" because he's been one of the 10 best coaches in the league throughout his tenure. He took a team that was 1-15 and in 2 years had them in the Super Bowl. He's had them competitive in every year, even the ones that they've been injury plagued(which seems to be every other season hence why he's not made the playoffs in consecutive seasons. Whenever, they have been healthy, they've been contenders(see 2003 Super Bowl appearance that was only lost because John Kasay kicked it out of bounds, 2005 NFC Title appearance that was lost because they lost their top 3 running backs, and last years 12-4 team that lost because Jake Delhomme gave it away). So get your facts straight!

Posted by: Reid | Nov 10, 2009 10:37:49 PM

Hey Reid, facts by definition are not subjective. They are facts. Check the facts, the numbers speak for themselves. Your explanation/excuses do not change, as you say, the facts. His record is Yo Yo, for whatever reason, never had back to back winning seasons.

Here is something subjective for you to consider. Fox refuses to give up on players. He played Foster at running back long after it became apparent he was worthless. In FACT he played him after they drafted Williams. Had they played Williams and discovered what they know now a year earlier, they would not have had to draft Stewart. If they did not draft Stewart, they could have drafted Joe Flacco. Wouldn't this team look alot different had your top 10 guy actually coached as opposed to managed?

Just saying. Opinions are opinions, you have stated yours. FACT....no back to back winning seasons....not even two.....plenty of coaches have done that over the past 8 years. Their players don't get hurt? He does not develop depth/players.

Posted by: cmo | Nov 11, 2009 6:59:05 AM

One reason for yo-yo records is that following a good year (i.e. 12-4) the NFL toughens up the schedule the following year for that team. So your "great" team is exposed the following year when it plays the 2nd toughest schedule (based on last year's records) in the NFL, which is what the Panthers were given for '09. The slow start (Jake and many other reasons) only exacerbated the Panthers poor showing for the first 6 games. The next 3 games are going to be a test...but the real test will come the last four games, with the Giants having the "worst" record of the 4.

Posted by: Ron | Nov 11, 2009 12:28:54 PM

I understand all the reasons folks, that isn't the debate. The good franchises overcome them. You think NE gets an easier schedule year after winning year? Pittsburgh? So far we have heard injuries and harder schedules as excuses. I know those things happen but they happen to every team in the league. Why can't the Panthers develop the depth and manage the cap the way the teams do that win almost every year?
