NEW ORLEANS – The Carolina Panthers gave the unbeaten New Orleans Saints a scare Sunday, but couldn’t pull off a potential season-turning win at the Superdome.

The Panthers scored first, led by 14 points at halftime and didn’t trail until late in the fourth quarter, but still lost 30-20.

Carolina fell to 3-5, while the Saints improved to 8-0 and ended a seven-game home losing streak to the Panthers. It was Carolina's first loss to the Saints in Louisiana during coach John Fox’s eight-year tenure.

New Orleans and Indianapolis are the NFL’s lone remaining unbeaten teams at the halfway mark of the season.

The Saints trailed 17-3 at halftime, but came roaring back behind two long pass plays in the third quarter.

Drew Brees’ 63-yard pass to Devery Henderson on the third play of the third period set up a 10-yard touchdown run by Pierre Thomas.

Then, after Carolina drove for a field goal, Brees struck again with a 54-yard touchdown pass to Robert Meachem.

New Orleans went ahead for good on John Carney’s 40-yard field goal with 4:45 remaining.

The Saints put the finishing touches on the win when running back DeAngelo Williams fumbled at the Carolina 1 and defensive tackle Anthony Hargove recovered it and returned it for a touchdown and a 30-10 lead.

The Panthers drove to inside the New Orleans 5 in the final minute, but ran out of downs and didn't score.

After trailing 17-3 at halftime, the Saints outscored the Panthers 27-3 in the second half.

Williams opened the game’s scoring with a 66-yard touchdown drive and added another first-quarter touchdown.

Brees finished the game 24 of 35 passing for 330 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Williams rushed 21 times for 149 yards, raising his season total to 768. He's on pace to surpass his 2008 total of 1,515 yards.

Why must we pull back the throttle every damn time we get ahead. You cant stop gunning against the number 1 offense in the NFL. Thanks again Coach Fox

"Panthers upset bit unravas down the stretch"

You all really need to hire some copy editors.

"unravas"?? Interesting word choice in the headline.

Jake, worst QB in the league. Not only you cant throw, but you can take snaps or hand the ball off correctly either. 1 yard line and messed up a TD

And he still is our starter. I am so glad Fox wont be here next year. His contract is up next year and its a great feeling

This one's on the guy who dropped two TD passes and fumbled. Doesn't matter if you hve 534 yards in a game, when it counts and you blow it it all means nothing.

Posted by: Aaron | Nov 8, 2009 7:17:55 PM

Ouch this is worse than getting blown out.

Here we go again. Up in 1st quarter, play it safe the rest of the game.

Jake gets to pad his stats in the last few minutes of the 4th quarter so Fox can say that Jake didn't have a bad game. Really? Jake had a bad game because until the 4th quarter we were scared to throw it. We can't run every single play!

Can we sell these guys to someone dumb enough to waste the money on them? Or perhaps shoot them, or throw them off of a cliff... anything entertaining to make up for 138 MILLION wasted dollars on these losers.

If you noticed after the game, I was talking to the Saint. Thats where Im headed!

Posted by: Steve Smith | Nov 8, 2009 7:21:08 PM

Fuck you delhomme haters are pathetic. Blame Deangelo Williams for fumbling at his own two or dropping two (one easy) touchdown pass. If two of those three don't happen WE WIN.

Aaron, how about we stop using D.Will for every thing. Stop telling him to be our offense. First off, Jake shouldn't have messed up the hand off on the 1 yard line, then maybe D.Will wouldnt have dropped a tight TD pass. And that last fumble means nothing, we wouldn't have won with Jake leading the come back

Geaux Saints!!!! We are sending your kitty kats home in a cat carrier!!! Saints 8 and 0 baby!!!

Posted by: nolagirl | Nov 8, 2009 7:22:59 PM

Wow Jake the snake posted the most ignorant post I have ever seen.

Posted by: Gamble20 | Nov 8, 2009 7:23:10 PM

Congrats Panther fans we have the DUMBEST TIME-OUT WASTING ,NON-GAMEPLANING ,PREVENT DEFENSE CALLING , COACH MAYBE EVER. That little timeout wasting COST Carolina the GAME and not to mention turn-overs...heart ripping out sh** I'm tellin you what!...Now that's finding a WAY to LOSE at it's best...did FOX bet the spread or something!

Not a girl probably plucks his eyebrows and says "Vegas, baby"!

Posted by: Steve Smith | Nov 8, 2009 7:24:22 PM

Nolagirl... Are you that immature? We were supposed to lose you know. You guys are overrated.

Posted by: Gamble20 | Nov 8, 2009 7:24:25 PM

they played hard...made a few mistakes and the Saints took advantage on them. Good game by the Panthers....bad play calling in the second half. This isn't the end of the world....we'll meet again Saints.

As for Saints fans....I'd like to know where half of them have been hiding..I have never seen so many in my life. I know they will be on here sometime talking trash...but if anything the should be ashamed for letting the "Kitty Kats" as they say even come close to beating them. Shut up and accept the fact that it was a good game and that the Aints aren't unbeatable. Good..yes....unbeatable...no

Posted by: Dustin | Nov 8, 2009 7:24:36 PM

Until this team gets a QB that is capable of throwing the ball more than 15 times a game, and a coach that has enough functioning brain cells to know that 17 points is not enough to beat the Saints.

Fox-Delhomme-Hurney, just leave, please.

Posted by: heelatious | Nov 8, 2009 7:24:38 PM

Was it just me or did John Fox try to run the ball, and milk the clock with 45 minutes left in the game?!?

Posted by: Dan | Nov 8, 2009 7:25:00 PM

Delhomme defenders are a sorry excuse for a Panther fan

He had his chance to lead a win.. and what happened, he held the ball too long and took a sack

Posted by: jake the snake | Nov 8, 2009 7:25:20 PM

Can't blame on Jake, he wanted to go for the kill with 2:00 left in the first half after Williams 13 yard 1st down run but 3 very predictable runs lost that chance. This is the worst offensive play calling I have ever witnessed. They called plays like the British Redcoats lining in formation to fight the gorilla style Patriots. It was easy for the Saints to figure this out. This was 3rd grade level coaching on offense. Until that changes and Carolina get some receiving, its no use to watch this one dimensional joke.

Posted by: cmoore | Nov 8, 2009 7:29:35 PM

When they had first and goal on the one, why did they hand the ball off?! Always do a qb sneak so there's no chance of them going backwards!

Posted by: Reid | Nov 8, 2009 7:29:38 PM

gamble 20: you are a moron. The odds were in the Saints' favor, yes we were the favorite but upsets happen. Overrated? I don't care what you think about us, we won plain and simple. Yea, I am happy about it after all the trash talk from some panthers fans all week. Yes I am here to rub your nose in it. If you were "supposed" to lose why did you bother showing up in the first place? That is a really stupid mentality.
