Smith: Panthers' passing game "isn't up to par;" Saints' QB Brees so good it's "ridiculous"

Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith had an interesting interview with Atlanta sports radio station 790 "The Zone" (WQXI AM) on Thursday, saying:

(On the Carolina offense) "... I guess you could say that the passing game isn’t up to par as it usually is,"

(On the Panthers'  passing woes) "... if you don’t address it at some point it is going to come back and haunt you and the passing game has came back and haunted us because sometimes we just go with what is working and not necessarily fix or attempt to fix or to improve the passing game"

(On whether the Saints' receivers are great) "You sneeze good and turn around Drew Brees is really just putting the ball square in between their numbers.  I am not hatin’ but I think honestly I have watched those guys run routes and they don’t necessarily have to run the best routes because their quarterback is ridiculous.”

If that doesnt spell I want Delhomme gone I dont know what does.

jeh, I agree he probably wants Delhomme benched, but that interview didn't really show that.

You delhomme haters are dick heads.

That being said, good news! Cutler now leads the league in INT's, and while I wouldn't put it past him, Delhomme has cushion now being 4 away from Cutler :-)

All of this is management's fault...the panthers could have gone after brees a few years back when he was leaving san diego but didnt even ATTEMPT to look into at least talking to the guy. everyone knows jake has never been more than an average qb at best. fox always talks about creating competition at every position but did nothing at the qb position. now he has to try and 'hide' jake during games...all 'safe' throws etc. u CANNOT hide your qb in the nfl...if your qb sucks everybody knows it and they gameplan for it. unfortunately we r stuck with jake due to management's belief that he is the right qb for the team...which he sadly is because the others r just what jake is...BACKUPS! its just a shame to sit and watch steve smith waste his prime years here in carolina because our qb is barely better than those of us sitting here posting comments. i KNOW i could throw 5 ints in a game if they put me in. and they would only have to pay me league minimum. until we get a REAL qb here and put Fake Gohomme on the bench with a clipboard the panthers r gonna be exactly what they r now....SORRY.

I don't think he wants Jake benched. We don't have anyone who can actually replace him effectively at this point. I think he is more or less saying we need to get this fixed in the off-season and probably should have already done so this past off-season.

How many passing attempts versus Jake's?

Posted by: John | Nov 13, 2009 12:26:16 AM

Reckon Poopers wanted the same thing?? I tried posting that notion on here months ago, but these capatalist communist hacks were censoring EVERYTHING I tried posting. Much unlike now, where they are just selectiv.

Posted by: SYRPIS | Nov 13, 2009 12:57:48 AM

And John, thank you for making that point. It is obvious some hypocites (like ones that thow out lables like "Jake-haters") have issues admitting the obvious. I mean, should I be calling Gamble 20 a "common sense-hater??" LOL And it is amazing how my political (because I attack management or billboard players) comments get censored, but d*ck head doesn't even get a second look???? REALLY, you communist capital hacks!!!!

Posted by: SYRPIS | Nov 13, 2009 1:03:49 AM

btw, let me clarify that I don't care what Poopers wants!! He should have been traded weeks ago!

Posted by: SYRPIS | Nov 13, 2009 1:05:36 AM

Capitalist Communist hacks? how do you even wrap your mind around calling someone that?

Peppers haters are the worst. The guy has played great in all but maybe two games this year. I think the biggest Peppers haters must not watch other teams much, because other elite DEs aren't great in every game either. Peppers is held to a higher standard for some reason.

I have to agree with the poster who said that no competition has been brought in to challenge Jake since he has been the starter. It stuns me how QBs like Donovan Mcnabb and Drew Brees when he was in San Diego could have quarterback controversies and we even have a peep in Carolina. We cant move forward as a team if we let the most critical position be manned by a person who cannot give you a legitimate chance of winning crucial games. Every other team in the league (with the exception of the Raiders) knows this. It is time to get a Franchise QB this off season. It is not Jake hating because I don't hate him. I just see things for what they are.

Brees is good, and I just dream about what Steve Smith could do with a QB of that caliber on our roster. We need to do whatever it takes to get a good QB in here, along with a new coaching staff. John Fox is pretty much done here, as well as Jeff Davidson.

panthers my fav team and if we had a elite qb and kemoeatu was not injured wed win the superbowl 4 sure.

A quarterback, no matter how great can't hit a WR in the numbers when that WR can't run a route. Smith needs to look into a mirror and fix things in his own game. Seems the JD haters forget that Smith dropped one pass and made no effort on another pass that was perfectly thrown, complained throughout the last game but yet still had more balls thrown to him than any other WR. When is the last time you saw Smith wide open on a route. Oh yea, against Atlanta and he caught a perfectly thrown pass for a TD. Smith needs to keep his mouth shut and get his game going, then I'll feel sorry for him.

I hope Steve Smith gets out of Carolina. I love the panthers, but I want Steve Smith to have a super year and he can only do that with a REAL QB and offensive coordinator.I would love to see him play for the Patriots, Colts, or Saints.

End of Line.

He doesn't want Delhomme benched, he wants the play calling to be better. He doesn't mind blocking for the run and you can see it when he plays, but he wants more passes. he feels that he has proven himself enough for them to get him involved in the offense. Jake is a part of the problem, but the play calling is horrible and not aggressive enough. But when they call them aggressively, the players (including jake) have to make the plays. The receivers also have to go and get the ball as well. Hopefully, the panthers will get angry and play with everything they have.

Fake Delhomme needs to go!!! There are other qb that deserve a chance!

MattyNice will show "Joke DellhommO" what a QB should look like!! Go Birds!

Jake Delhomme is certainly John Fox's emperor wearing no clothes and it's ridiculous to watch. As I said before great running backs, a good defense and a terrible quarterback is good for about 3-5 at the mid season mark.

I too hope Steve Smith goes elsewhere because for his sake I'd love to see what he could do with a Drew Brees or another top shelf quarterback. He's way too good of a receiver to put up with this nonsense much longer. And he is handling it very, very well.

here is a sad stat. jake delhomme is the LEAST BLITZED QUARTERBACK IN THE NFL. think about that for a second.......

wow he really sucks.

"Jake's my man, If Jake goes I go, Jake is my Man"!!! now the fat lip punk turned on him. Phuckem all!!!

First and far most; I blame Fox and Hurney. They drafted for depth and brought in free agents that are capable of starting every since they have been with the organization. The problem is Fox and Hurney never tried to upgrade the backup quarterback position since they have been here. No knock on Jake but he never has been a franchise quarterback. He's a manager of the game. Hand the ball of to the tailbacks and every now and then use play action to keep the defense off balance. Sure it's not all his fault with way the passing game is going; but he is a big part of the problem. I think it's hard for any of the receivers to keep running 30, 40 yards downfield and either have the ball underthrown or overthrown. To keep have to defend against a bad throw or a pass that is thrown into double coverage. It's time to sit Jake anytime Fox has to protect him by keep running the ball to insure that Jake don't turn over the ball. I agree with someone who said that everytime Jake goes back for a pass, I hold my breathe praying that he don't throw an interception or holds unto the ball too long and have it slapped out of his hands. We need someone in here that can be a playmaker. One who can win games if opponents are stopping the run. Franchise quarterbacks can win games for you. At this point; can anyone say they have confidence that Jake can win games for us anymore? Also, just not to put things all on Jake; our play calling is too predictable. I'm sure that everyone who watches the game can call out the play call before it happens. If our offense improved like our defense; we'd probably talking about long playoff run.

Come Register at WWW.REALPANTHERFANS.COM/FORUM.

This is not a fan site...but a movement! While it still needs work so do we, the fans. Not sure if you have noticed but there are two kinds of fans at Panther games, fans and "REAL FANS".

If to you Carolina football is a passion and you leave the games hoarse and feeling like you just played the game yourself, then you have come to the right place.

While the song may have not been the most inspiring, the first line was the point... " Stand and cheer for the Panthers. Stand and cheer for the team!"

We are off to a rough start but silence is not the answer. Be it Boos to show that we care or a growl after a first down, in the stands, at the bar, or on your couch show that you are a "REAL FAN" and encourage others to do the same! Stand up and have a voice!

Don't be a "fair-weather", be "REAL!"

I am not enjoying any of this with the Panthers. Very poor management that will only cause dissent in the ranks.
