Third quarter update: Saints 20, Panthers 20

The Saints struck with two huge pass plays in the third quarter to change the complexion of the game.

Drew Brees' 63-yard completion to Devery Henderson on the third play of the period set up a 10-yard touchdown run by Pierre Thomas to cut Carolina's lead to 17-13.

The Panthers then drove 78 yards from their 21 to the New Orleans 1, but a broken play caused them to settle for a field goal instead of a touchdown.

On first-and-goal from the 1, quarterback Jake Delhomme bobbled the ball and wasn't able to make a handoff to Jonathan Stewart. That resulted in Delhomme being dropped for a 6-yard loss and the Panthers getting a 25-yard field goal from John Kasay for a 20-13 lead.

The Saints struck with a big play again when Brees completed a 54-yard pass to Robert Meachem on the final play from scrimmage in the quarter. Meachem beat Panthers' cornerback Chris Gamble on the play.

The extra point tied the score at 20 heading into the final quarter.

This game is as good as over. Fox's conservative "play not to lose" gameplan, is going to get us another L.

It's sad that we have a QB, that can only be trusted to attempt between 15-20 pass attempts per game. All the pressure is on the defense, every week, to get this team a win. Delhomme and Fox are both pathetic, and they are dragging this team down with them.

such a shame we play not to lose........ and then fritter the game away and lose by at least three now does Jake throw an INT to end the game here????

And there you go. You have just witnessed another Hurney-Fox-Delhomme "play not to lose, but we will anyway" production. Thank you and drive home safely.

It's hard to win, when you play without a QB every week.

Nice try but they should have won it.Another painful throw away game.

running out of your own end with no timeouts left????

hopefully this is the start of the end of the Fox era.....

I don't blame Jake today. Not at all . . . . heck, he seemed frustrated with the play calling. It is absolutely correct to criticize Fox!

Look at the Miami Dolphin's offense (run by Dan Henning) . . . they are amongst the most innovative this year. Remember Dan who Fox made the scapegoat a couple of years back.

The players were great today given their lack of leadership.

"Great game manager & leader" my arse!!! I am so sick of hearing that. I do feel bad for the guy having such a bad time with it, but at least I don't have to listen to/read as much of the BS anymore!

Richardson, by relocating your sons in their place with the franchise, you have shown a glimpse of understanding the basice economic principle of "seperate entity." Now, it is really important we move on to the next important and basic economic principle of "sunk cost." IT IS TIME TO BENCH JAKE in favor of anyone available.

Finally, someone said something about him burning timeouts regularly. Other QB's don't always have to do that. Game manager my arse. Secondly his turnovers have finally been well publicized. Thirdly, now he can't handle a snap!? Finally, yeah, "he's an emotional guy and it's a great asset" my arse! What kind of leader screams at the bench that he wants to throw the ball downfield (using hand motions so the whole world can see, no less)?? Also, he is going to not only point fingers but get into a lengthy lecture and shout at his players on the field??? Lack of maturity much??

Richardson, I get that you threw $20M at him despite him still being under contract for the next couple of years, being pretty old, apparently not fully recovered from a serious injury, and a disastorous playoff performance. OK, you messed up, but by CONTINUING TO INVEST THE REST OF YOUR FUTURE INTO THE GUY IS AN EVEN BIGGER MISTAKE!!! Consider the $20M a sunk cost, count your losses, and move on while you still can already!!
