UPDATE: Beason disputes assault charge, to plead not guilty, says his attorney

Panthers linebacker Jon Beason disputes a misdemeanor assault charge against him and will plead not guilty, according to his attorney.

Beason was arrested this afternoon and charged with assault with the intent to inflect serious injury stemming from an incident at Uptown Cabaret in the early morning hours of Nov. 16, after Carolina's home win over Atlanta the previous day.

He was released today with the promise to appear in court.

Beason was arrested after his accuser, Gregory C. Frye, obtained a warrant despite the fact that a police investigation in the matter was not yet complete, according to Beason's attorney, George Laughrun.

"Jon is adamant that he had nothing to do with the assault and he will plead non-guilty," said Laughrun. "He looks forward to his day in court and to getting his good name cleared."

A copy of Beason's arrest warrant said probable cause was found that he "did unlawfully and willfully commit an assault and battery" on Frye "by punching the victim in the face with his fist, inflicting serious injuries," resulting in Frye sustaining a crushed nasal cavity and swelling to his nose and eye area.

Frye has a long history of legal troubles, according to court records, including charges of assaulting a female and writing a worthless check in 2008, both of which were dismissed.

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney released a statement saying, "We were aware of the police department looking into the incident and have addressed it with Jon. At this time there appear to be two different versions of what happened.”

Ok, nothing good can really happen at the Uptown Cabaret. Surely WFNZ will no longer allow him to appear on the Pack Man show weekly any longer. Why couldn't the guy just go home like 99.9% of the rest of America?

Whatever. Sounds like if Beason did actually deck this guy the dude probably was asking for it. He already has an assaulting a female charge and the guy is drinking in a strip club. Looks like Jon was more of a good Samaritan.

This looks totally bogus, if he did anything he was provoked. It's a shame an upstanding guy like Beason has to deal with this. Just goes to show you have to be careful about where you go and whom you associate with when you're a high-profile NFL star.

Jon Beason Has no Criminal Record ...... The accuser has a LONG History of legal troubles...... Do the Math ! This is a Loser trying to drag Jon Beason into something for purpose of cashing in ! No doubt that if Jon did hit the Guy, He had to put jon in situation where he had no choice !

Posted by: Donald | Nov 30, 2009 5:54:36 PM

This guy is trying to get $$ from Beason! You can pull up arrest record & he has a some charges from aggrevating asault on a female & bad check!!

Gregory Frye is his name! He is a big guy though too! Probably not as tough as Beason!!!He looks like a punk wanting to get $$ by provoking! LOSER!

It would take CMPD a year to do anything. Obvioulsy the magistrate found enough evidence. That is what Jon gets for going in a place of ill repute.

Probably because 99.9% of America isn't a 25 year old millionaire. Strip clubs aren't illegal and if that's where he wants to spend some money after a win at home then more power to him. If you were in his shoes you would at least want the right to do the same thing.

Gotta stay awaaaaay, from that Uptown Cabaret! LOL for some reason, Professional ball players, strippers, drinks and drunks are a bad mix. Go figure....At least Stephen Jackson wasn't involved...this way at least the Bobcats won't blow like the Panthers

Oh my god. He punched him so hard it crushed his "naval" cavity. Is that like crushed chest capacity Q?

Posted by: MrK | Nov 30, 2009 6:40:52 PM

I just wanna know how you crush someones belly button... Surely they meant nasal cavity, not naval?

my god a young man with money being around women i'm shocked. i can't believe it. what will become of him. how the hell can you hold this against him. 99.9 percent of us do the same thing

i have known greg frye for over 10 years. he used to go by kasey frye when we were in school. he goes to clubs and pretends he plays for the panthers to get free drinks and attention. he some how got an nfl players card a while back. we all used to run together back in the day. now most of us will not go with him because he is always in "panther mode" and quite frankly it is embarrassing. to bad he didnt really get taught a lesson.

@ MrK, dude That's exactly what I was about to point out. I hope smitty ain't taking lessons from this guy lmao

First of all, nothing good can happen being an NFL player in a strip club.

Second of all, regardless if the guy has a criminal history or not, the question still remains "Did Beason punch the guy"? Which it appears he did, so the question is "Why did Beason punch the guy"?

I'll withold my two cents until I hear the complete story.

Well a few things here Beason has ever right to be at any strip club in the world he feels like, No one says a word when Rich old white guys hang out in strip clubs...but when a young "public figure" especially a black one does it then oooo he's a thug. I don't know Beason personally he may be a thug...he may not be But I don't think we should assume. As for the Guy involved So what! the guy wrote a bad! check..who cares! that doesn't mean it's not possible that he was wrongly assaulted! I can go break the law twice! tommorow but that doesn't remove the fact that I'm a citizen and entitled to protection from violent acts just as any other person is.
I don't know....I really don't care one way or the other about this....if he did he'll pay the price as he should..and if he didn't...the accuser...has a broken! face...trying to get money..so one way or the other justice will be served.

Those "Rich Old White Guys" are the root of all evil. Get a life Chevron.

If I remember correctly, Frye played at the Naval Cavity before he was drafted by the Panthers.

I know the guy beason hit, here is what happened, true story. The guys name is Greg Frye. He saw beason doing cocaine. He told a stripper he saw beason doing cocaine...stripper tells beason guy is telling people he is doing coke. so beason runs over there and beats the shit out of him.....and actually dante rosario jumped in and helped, but he can't get the proof he needs to get the warrant for dante so beason is taking the hit. I met this guy a few times through acquintances and called him earlier to get the story. believe it or not!, i've known greg a long time too from college. we were in the same fraternity.....hey levi.....how do you know greg? are you "the bartender" i just talked too hahahahhaha? call me

Dude i know greg too, he is a stand up guy and a great person. there is no need to bash a guy just because he got jumped. grow up greg is a great person.

Greg is the biggest loser I've ever known!
Went to school with the wannabe. Serves him right to mess with the the BEAST!

Posted by: Got Em | Nov 30, 2009 8:40:38 PM

Innocent until proven quilty. Hang in there Jon

Posted by: DG | Nov 30, 2009 8:50:26 PM

Greg is an idiot. I have known him since high school. I have no doubt he started something he could not finish.

Posted by: woodberry | Nov 30, 2009 8:57:20 PM

Jon already admitted to doing it, its just not public he said, "guys shouldn't be going around saying im doing drugs, it could cost me 100grand, so yeah i hit him". greg's lawyer has this statement on file from a witness.

Posted by: annoymous | Nov 30, 2009 8:58:49 PM

I know Greg, and he saw Beason kill a stripper in the back room, but the judge wouldn't issue a warrant for that becuase strippers don't have souls. So Beason hit Greg (the next day) just to prove the point. But he couldn't kill Greg because Greg has a soul and Beason would have been in jail for a few years. True story.
