Fox: QB, RB announcements likely gametime

Although it remains obvious that Matt Moore will start at quarterback Sunday against Tampa Bay, Panthers coach John Fox said the decision likely won't be announced until gametime Sunday.

"It probably won't be until they trot out of the tunnel," Fox said of the quarterback decision and also when an announcement might be made about running back DeAngelo Williams (ankle).

Jake Delhomme (broken finger) didn't practice again Thursday. Delhomme said Wednesday he'd be "hard pressed" to throw a ball this week. Matt Moore has been practicing with the first team.

Aside from Williams and Delhomme, receiver Dwayne Jarrett (ankle) defensive end Charles Johnson (pectoral), defensive tackle Tank Tyler (knee), defensive back Captain Munnerlyn (concussion) and receiver Muhsin Muhammad (knee) didn't practice.

Muhammad said later he expected to play against the Buccaneers. -- David Scott

Definately covering and insulting everybodies intelligence! That is what irritates me, seriously!

Instead of doing all of these articles on how Jake is hurt and how Jake is struggling, how about you do ONE article on how Matt Moore is the worst backup in the NFL?!?! I swear, why does this team keep a guy around that they have absolutely no confidence in? It makes NO sense!!!! I never heard of a team this afraid to send in a backup.

Posted by: Clay | Dec 3, 2009 2:46:51 PM

Jesus H. Christ.....does this guy think he is Vince Lombardi now? You are no Belichick here John, go ahead and announce that Jake is DONE so we can all celebrate. What a moron.

By the way: Moore is 2-1 as a starter. He is much better than 50% of the backups in this league.

Posted by: AppGrad04 | Dec 3, 2009 3:09:01 PM

The worst backup in the NFL is Jake Delhomme. He's also the worst starter in the league. Congrats!!

Posted by: david | Dec 3, 2009 3:10:32 PM

why should he announce now if he doesn't have to? He's trying to utilize every competitive advantage he can and win the game, not appease the fans.

Posted by: anonymous | Dec 3, 2009 3:27:12 PM

I have no idea if this is a realistic possibilty, but who likes Josh Johnson of the bucs if he becomes available?

Posted by: Nick | Dec 3, 2009 3:30:37 PM

But the fans feel that they should be appeased...we pay good money and should know everything, from when the coach takes a dump, to how he takes his coffee...sarcasm for those of you that don't get it.

Jason Campbell with be the starting QB for this team next year. He'll be the best available option for the Panthers. He and Jake will compete, and Jason will win.

Way to rip out a page from the Eric Mangini playbook. It worked wonders for the Cleveland Browns this year. I hope you and Eric meet the same deserved fate at the close of the season.

I wish Richardson would have some cajones and fire Fox for stupidity at once.

While I do not have a RIGHT to know what the game-day plan is, I must admit that I cannot fathom any reason at all why Fox will not announce the starting quarterback for Sunday. I'm sure the Bucs are preparing for Moore to be in since Jake hasn't taken any snaps at all in practice this week. Can anyone out there tell me what we have to lose by making the announcement now? I never have believed the nonsense that the injury to Jake's hand is phony--that's just way over the top. I do wonder, however, why all the secrecy as to his status? Broken fingers don't heal sufficiently in seven days to recover the dexterity needed to grip and pass a football (remember Tony Romo was out for three games plus the bye week when his pinkie was broken). For goodness sake--the man's finger is broken--give him a break (no pun intended) and just announce Moore will start!

The Richardsons are going to replace Fox with Weis--- watch.

Posted by: SYRPIS | Dec 3, 2009 4:11:42 PM

ESPN reported an hour ago that Matt will start.

Posted by: Mee | Dec 3, 2009 4:25:01 PM

TB will prepare for Moore, but if they trot Jake out TB will just be able to relax a little.

Posted by: lvis | Dec 3, 2009 4:38:33 PM

I will not go back to the stadium or purchase anything panthers until Fox and Dellhome is fired.

Posted by: JAY | Dec 3, 2009 4:42:14 PM

John Fox is Richard Cranium .

Posted by: dee gray | Dec 3, 2009 4:42:23 PM

Fox are you serious???? I would fire your ass today and mail you your shit. The worst coach in the league this year based on the talent he has. 3rd and 1 and he has Jake throw a hell mary against the Dolphins. Walking Papers!!! IT's coming John. Back to a Def Coordinator if you're lucky!

it is what it is!

I don't understand they had Rodney Pete and he was much better than Jake and they benched him so fast it made your head spin now Jake throw interception like he breaths air and John Fox is still saying he won't make announcement until game day. What is going on is any one asking why does Fox protect Jake so much ???? I have never seen anything like it in my life. Someone please help me to understand why does Fox seem to not let go of this man Help Help please

Mee, yes, I saw the ESPN report and went back to Charlotte.com thinking they would've updated the article...but that wasn't the case..just thought the local media would have the latest news.

Posted by: Panthergirl | Dec 3, 2009 4:43:38 PM

I thought so too Lori.

Posted by: Mee | Dec 3, 2009 4:45:20 PM

This is getting ridiculous! What Moore (HA) does Fox need to see in order bench Jake? Does Jake need one more 4 int game to proove he should be benched? The season is lost Fox, accept it, look to the future and start Moore to see if he has any potential as a starting QB. The thing is, Fox knows he's going to be fired and doesn't want to play Moore in a real game and enable the Panthers to get a grasp of what we have. He's not going to help this franchise from here on out. He's going on cruise control and will just bore us with the same old boring comments and responses. I HATE YOU JOHN FOX AND MARTY HURNEY! GO AWAY!!!!!

Way to keep the Bucs on their toes Fox. Worst kept secret in the NFL. EVERYONE knows Moore is going to start.
