Panthers finally declare Delhomme out; Williams questionable

Kudos to Panthers coach John Fox for not prolonging the obvious. Instead of waiting until Carolina comes through the tunnel Sunday to formally admit what everyone has known most of the week, he announced after practiced today that quarterback Jake Delhomme is out of Sunday's game against Tampa Bay due to a broken finger.

That makes formal the fact that Matt Moore is starting against the Bucs.

Running back DeAngelo Williams didn't practice and is listed as questionable. He hasn't practiced all week due to an ankle injury. Wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad, nursing a sore knee, was back at practice and is listed as probable.

In addition to Delhomme, defensive tackle Tank Tyler (knee) is also out.

Doubtful are wide receive Dwayne Jarrett (ankle, didn't practice), defensive end Charles Johnson (pectoral, didn't practice) and defensive back Captain Munnerlyn (concussion, fully participated).

Probable are guard Mackenzy Bernadeau (knee, fully participated), fullback Brad Hoover (ankle, fully participated), linebacker Na'il Diggs (ribs, fully participated), and running back Jonathan Stewart (Achilles, fully participated).

Duh!

Maybe they could keep Jake around as a backup (if he would be willing to restructure his contract to a 10-year deal offering him the league minimum, and spreading that signing bonus over that span, equalling less than $2M per year) and still use him as a Bojangle's billboard.

I can see the commercials now...
Jake FUMBLES the chicken, and his teammates make a scramble to recover, making a great play before it hits the ground, or...
Jake is behind the counter in a Bojangle's worker's uniform and he is passing out the biscuits, but the nasty opponents come in for the INTERCEPTION!!!

$20M Declaration: "Coach, my heart is just not in it any more." --- Jake Delhoe. Anyone esle find it interesting that both him and Poopers have a mysterious hand injurty that is limiting their participation?

Posted by: SYRPIS | Dec 4, 2009 12:44:53 PM

Its about time someone made a call that makes sense - too little, too late, but still the right call.....

Now we just need to start looking for a new QB and head coach

BTW, Chuck, ESPN made it official yesterday. Is that what really gets you mad?? Maybe if you and your buddies weren't such &^$^#, you could have broke the story first. Just an FYI for those who don't see the obvious. :)

I read ths at 3pm yesterday on espn.com

Jake GoHome.

If there's no cap next year, the signing bonus spread won't matter. Besides, Jake actually took a pay CUT with the new deal, not a raise, and gave a lot of cap relief for this year.

Hey syrpis and mee...aka genius'...it wasn't technically official until Fox's news conference today. Everyone knew that would be the outcome, but it wasn't official until today.

Who will be Moore's backup on Sunday?

Posted by: jimmyboy | Dec 4, 2009 12:59:45 PM

man i wish we could just bench williams, smith and stewart the rest of the year. no need in putting miles on their legs when the season is pointless.

Posted by: firefox | Dec 4, 2009 1:15:39 PM

Williams, Smith, and Stewart are playing for pride, stats, HOF, and Pro Bowl regardless of what happens this year. You fight with your team no matter what.

Now I believe Fox was actually holding out to see if Jake could come in and play. He wanted to see how Moore would practice before he committed to Moore. Fox is trying to be sly, but it is not working.

We are going to be beat up on Sunday. I wish us luck.

Posted by: Panthers2003 | Dec 4, 2009 1:36:48 PM

Moore's backup will be THE THIRTEENTH MAN! WHOOOOO! GO PANTHERS!

Posted by: Newsinz | Dec 4, 2009 1:47:58 PM

errr...or maybe the 12th man.

Posted by: Newsinz | Dec 4, 2009 1:49:29 PM

I hope they win this game but after this sunday, we might as well send the locker room get well soon cards and call it a day. (I'd love it if they were to beat the Patriots this season though. Tom Brady is a cocky douche!!) GO CAROLINA!!!

Posted by: Phylicia | Dec 4, 2009 2:13:07 PM

tom brady had some hot women though!

I'm glad we've officially declared Moore the starter, but it's just sad that it's b/c of injury to Delhomme! I bet if Delhomme wasn't hurt, Fox would have started him again. That's why Fox is an idiot! I'm sooo over and done with Fox and Hurney. Jerry, please fire Fox and crew! Don't make us suffer through another ho-hum year!

Posted by: stickyd | Dec 4, 2009 2:32:12 PM

First of all folks, you're collective memory must be shot, because last season was not at all a "ho-hum year". Eleven months ago the Panther's were running roughshod over every opponent and had a first round bye in the playoffs. Didn't hear a peep out of the fair-weather fan then. Enough of you bandwagoners will squawk, Fox will get canned, another fortunate team will hire him, he'll get them to a Super Bowl within three years and the alzheimer Panther fans will wonder why the team let the guy go in the first place. Crawl back under your miserable rocks girls.

Secondly, wake up and realize that Fox was just playing the strategy game every coach plays -- holding out on naming a starter as long as possible to make the opponent prepare for both. It's simple football strategy kids and as obvious as the nose on your face. Er, then again, maybe some of you don't have noses. I wish I didn't today. Then I wouldn't have to smell these nasty comments.

SYRPIS...perhaps learn to spell at a 5th grade level before you criticize others and their profession.

Posted by: PanthersFan | Dec 4, 2009 3:34:19 PM

You weren't listening if you didn't hear complaints last year, George. There have been complaints for several years about Delhomme's lack of talent. Also have been calls for years about fox's play calling. Nobody realized it was Fox's play calling until all of his coordinators jumped ship and the weak play calling remained.

And that was a pretty sweet move by Fox to try to confuse the competition. "Do we practice to prepare for basically a rookie, or a vet that plays like a rookie". Better yet, "do we prepare for a rookie or just take the week off and rest our guys and let Jake and Fox do what they do and give us the game". That's gangsta, son!

Posted by: Rudeboyardee | Dec 4, 2009 4:02:27 PM

George Orwell - You are a clown! What dreamworld do you live in that John Fox will take anyone to the Super Bowl? Last year??? Did you forget about the Oakland game last year? Looks awful similar to this year's team huh? The guy has been a cancer for years now. The Super Bowl run was when he was "new" to the league. Once the NFC got game tape on this "head coach" they started dominating us. He's conservative to a fault and every good coach out there knows it. Fox will be fired and good riddance! He can go fail somewhere else.

Posted by: Tired of all it | Dec 4, 2009 4:04:20 PM

The NFC dominated us? Are you sure about that?

Posted by: Daniel | Dec 4, 2009 4:18:41 PM

Okay, some people on here may think they are fans.It is ok to question coaches and gm's but why all the Fox haters. He is one the best coaches in the NFL.Yes is THE most conservative, but the players play hard for him.For all the talk about Cowhers, you would think he was the winningest coach of all times in any sport. He won 1 superbowl in 15 years.Get over it.
