Fox: 'I see myself being back'

Panthers coach John Fox indicated he will return to the team next season in an interview aired last night on the weekly "Panther Talk" radio show on WBT (1110 AM).

Team play-by-play announcer Mick Mixon taped the interview before the show, asking Fox about his future, referring to Fox's comments the previous day after a win over New Orleans in which Fox was noncommittal about his plans and wouldn't say whether he wanted to return to the team for 2010.

Fox was much more committal Monday in his response.

"Going in front of the press group yesterday, you're fresh off a win," Fox said. "I don't have a lot of answers at this point other than I have a year remaining on my contract. I see myself being back here a year from now. That's just the way it is. It starts there and we'll move forward from that."

With the Panthers not extending his contract but not looking to make a coaching change either, Fox stands to enter the '10 season in the final year of his deal but set to be one of the NFL's highest paid coaches with a salary of around $6 million.

Fox is 76-60 in eight seasons with the Panthers, including the post season.

The team's position on Fox's contract is believed to be heavily influenced by the ongoing difficulty of the negotiations between league owners and the players' association for a new collective bargaining agreement. If no deal is reached  by March, the 2010 season will be played without a salary cap as owners begin gearing up for a potential lockout of players for the '11 season.

Was Fox told by Richardson to keep Jake as starter? If Richardson told Fox to stick with Jake then how can he fire Fox for the results?

I told you guys that I would be back

So, It is what it is....

LOL......Fire him?? Who were the clowns that signed Jake to another contract before the season started...?? When everybody and their mother could see this guy had hit the "Wall" talent wise. He played like garbage in the playoff lost last year, and beginning of this year, and he cost us the season. I think more than Fox needs to go, for sticking by Jake, and killing our chances of another playoff run.

Glad to see Fox back. We finished strong, D looks much better, and have the best RB duo (trio?) in the league. All we need is a competent QB to be back in the hunt. I appreciate Jake's professionalism and the Panthers' loyalty to him- but enough is enough. Moore deserves his shot, just like Jake did when he came in and beat the Jags years ago.

Don't care that much about Peppers. I like having him, but not at a crazy cost. Anything apart from having him walk with no compensation is Ok by me.

I'm not even cautiously optimistic about next year because I don't see any indication from Fox that he plans to make changes in his coaching style. His love affair with Jake could have ended up with the Panthers being the laughingstock of the NFL if Jake hadn't gotten hurt. Matt Moore proved what people have been saying-we need a QB change. Jake's career is over and it's pathetic to watch the coaching staff continue to act like he's the best in the league. We'll see what happens next year but if things don't improve, I hope Richardson has the nerve to do what should have been done this year.

Did Mark Richardson quit because his dad made gave Jake all that money and force Fox to play him?

Posted by: kevin | Jan 5, 2010 9:25:30 AM

I'm glad Fox is back. His biggest mistake was being to set on a certain quarterback. Players need to understand that they will replaced during a game if they aren't performing. Don't wait until you are half way through the season. Loyalty is fine to a point, but only when it's deserved. We have a much better team now because of our injuries. Football is a team sport and loyalty to individuals, has to have limits. I like John Fox, but my loyalty to him has it's limits, when it affects to the overall good of the our team.

Should everyone call the panthers @ 704-358-7800 or email ticketinfo@panthers.nfl.com
and ask who made the decision to stay with Jake because "he gives us the best chance to win"?
Was it Richardson or Fox?
Whoever it was needs to be fired.
We will not win with Jake. He is a backup and has never been more than that.

Posted by: kevin | Jan 5, 2010 9:40:13 AM

This has to be a money issue. I know deep-down, Richardson was hoping we would win a few at the end, so he could just announce Fox was staying. If we had lost the last 3, he'd have no choice but to fire him and pay Fox off, which he never wanted. The same goes for Jake too. You have to believe, the team is hoping he starts with what he's owed. This is a difference between a team that throws money round like Washington and us. On the contrary, we've a better run franchise, but you have to take things for what they are.

ncsports fan you are dumb.. how can you fire richardson.. and why would you fire fox in the final year of his contract.. its simple he either guides us to the playoffs next year or dosnt get a new contract.. simple.. for the record i like our chances

I have to agree. Fox made a poor decision when he kept a struggling Jake on the field! A good coach would have sat him. Fox refused, until he got hurt. To say that Fox turned this team around on his own coaching skills, is sort of insane. This team got good because our QB got hurt and a better QB stepped in. Fox did not recognize the talent on his own.

Posted by: Ged | Jan 5, 2010 9:46:12 AM

Fox is the reason we are sitting home now instead of playing next week. Him and him alone are to blame. Fire this bum.

Maybe it was Mark who pushed so hard to keep Jake. Mark left because he was a very bad influence in the front office and in the locker room, not because he didn't like his Dad's decision. Remember that Jerry had a heart transplant and was completely out of the day to day running of the team for months. As to John Fox, He's done a good job here and deserves to stay. I do think Fox and Hurney together are bad news because they are too much alike. We need some constructive disagreements in the front office.

Posted by: gene | Jan 5, 2010 10:05:44 AM

you guys are idiots!
Richardson made a good business move by not firing Fox b/c he would have still owed him that money minus what ever Fox would have gotten as a head coach somewhere else next season. On top of that to get a coach like cowher it would have cost him a lot of money especially for the 2011 season which looks like wont happen.
We all know that Moore will be given a chance to win the starting job next year and if he is truly better than Jake then he will win it.
If Peppers wont sign a long term deal we all know that they will franchise him then trade him, so get over that as well.
What you need to worry about is if we can get a solid #2 receiver before the season begins!

If the Panthers truly want Cowher, they would fire Fox now. Cowhers services will be out of their price range next year.

screw Fox his man crush cost the pathers a payoff season!!!!

Posted by: boydsgrigg | Jan 5, 2010 10:25:39 AM

1. Fox is staying and that is a good thing.

2. Hopefully, Jake is going or staying on the bench. That too is a good thing.

3. Peppers will get tagged and then we will trade if a long term deal cant be worked out. There really isn't more too it so why try to create options that don't exist.

4. Receivers are a much bigger issue, critical even. We are solid on every other part of the field but unless some serious upgrades are performed in the offseason then prepare for 2009 Part Deux.

5. And finally, black beans and brussel sprouts make for some eye watering farts.

Yours truly,

3 meaningless wins against teams that didn't care whether they won or not, saves Fox's job again. Every other yr he wins these meaningless games at the end of the year....why?
Because Fox coaches the meaningless games to win, as opposed to coaching not-to-lose. There's a huge difference. For example, at the beginning of the 3qtr vs NY & MN, they came out throwing, aka agressive play calling. We didn't see that all yr, when a loss would matter. You Fox lovers have a very short memory...like when we couldn't beat an AWFUL Buffalo team...at HOME! He sucked then, he sucks now. If it weren't for the uncertainty of 2011, he'd be long gone by now. Believe it!
Believe this as well, Jake will be starting when the season starts. If not, the 1st pick Moore throws he's gonna get pulled.

I heard that Mark wanted to bring in Vick and Jerry, who emphasizes morales, would not allow the ex-felon to play for the Panthers. This situation blew up and the sons found something else to do. Clearly, they understood that we had a QB problem, although I agree Vick was not the answer.

Posted by: panthster | Jan 5, 2010 10:37:35 AM

I'm glad he's back because I think our team is on the right path now and I would hate for us to go backwards by making changes. Not being signed to a long term contract should send Fox a message that he can't start Delhomme another year so I think we'll see Moore next year and our team will be competitive.

Posted by: Elizabeth | Jan 5, 2010 10:45:45 AM

Glad to have coach Fox, for his given mistake's like clinging to Jake 4 games too long and a few other's, let's be honest the good outshine's the bad as far as coach Fox. I think I would cling to a QB who helped the team get to the superbowl on the first year he was the starter, and I did as a fan, it is sad to see Jake struggle, tommy john is not like a pulled hammy. But their are MOORE option's for the panther's next year, GO PANTHER'S!!

Posted by: Bobby | Jan 5, 2010 10:49:16 AM

1. I am baffled by the love affair with Bill Cowher. He's not that good and would cause more of a disruption that anything.

2. With Moore leading the offense, this current team is dangerous and will only get better.

3. Medium rare steak makes my farts burn something awful.

Posted by: TheFlatulentOne | Jan 5, 2010 10:54:14 AM

Draft Tim Tebow. He will be the only QB that can play left tackle

Posted by: JJ | Jan 5, 2010 10:55:11 AM

Does Jerry's crush on Jake have anything to do with Bojangles?
