Report links Fox to Browns' job

Though Panthers coach John Fox said last night he expects to be back next season, a report in the Cleveland Plain Dealer today cites speculation linking Fox to the Browns' head coaching job if it becomes open.

New Browns president Mike Holmgren is weighing whether or not to retain Eric Mangini, whose team won its last four games to finish 5-11.

The story says Holmgren would be interested in a defensive-minded coach, such as Fox, and that Holmgren might have a hand in the offense.

That would be an interesting mesh. Fox is from the Chuck Noll school of coaching, relying heavily on defense and a strong running game. Holmgren is from the Bill Walsh school, employing a West Coast passing attack.

However, Holmgren also has had standout running backs in the past when he was a head coach, especially Shaun Alexander in Seattle.

The story also notes that Holmgren, Fox and Browns' general manager candidate Tom Heckert all are represented by the same agent, Bob LaMonte.

Fox has one year remaining on his contract. The Panthers declined to give him an extension, though his salary of around $6 million would make him one of the league's highest-paid coaches.

In order to go to another team, the Panthers would have to free Fox from the final year of his contract. That might require another team to give Carolina compensation, though the Panthers have the freedom to let him go without receiving anything in return.

This is totally unfounded. Cleveland runs a 3-4 defense, Fox runs a 4-3. Holmgren would install a west coast offense which conflicts with Fox's style of run first offense. And there is the fact that Fox would be leaving a team that is playing well which he built for a team that is playing poorly.

If the Cowboys tank their playoff game, I totally could see Phillips getting canned and Jerry paying draft picks to get Fox.

Don't see it happening, but if it does then I hope he takes his boys Jake and Pep with him. Hell anyone want to having a moving party, I am sure we could get all 3 of them outta town within an hour or 2 if we all pitch in.

If Jerry Jones were to ditch Phillips after this season, he's more likely to go after Shanahan, if he hasn't already signed with the Redskins.

I suspect its just another case of shoddy reporting. I read an article on the nfl site that said Fox might be a candidate for them but i think that article was posted b4 Fox said he sees himself back with the Panthers next year.

Please let the Browns hire Fox........and send Marty Hurney with him!

"There is also increasing speculation that Carolina coach John Fox could switch teams and be Holmgren's top choice as Browns coach." That is the comment in the paper they are basing this story on. The Observer is basing the link on a line that openly says "there is speculation". Like i said before, shoddy reporting.

This is ridiculus. Hope Fox does not accept or entertain the offer. Cleveland is a merry-go-round and Fox showed he still has the respect of the team after the last four games.

Man that would suck if Fox went to the Browns and the next coach failed. We would be worse than the Browns. Ouch!!!

I'd love it, but it sure doesn't seem likely. But think of the possibilities - can you picture this trade - Brady Quinn for Jake Delhomme? Works for me!!

Posted by: Wayne D | Jan 5, 2010 7:26:42 PM

Good, Let them figure out how to get a straight answer out of him. I'm tired of the status quo, "It is what it is"!!!

Posted by: Chuck | Jan 5, 2010 7:27:54 PM

And No!! he cant take Meeks with him!!

If Coach Fox were to leave, be prepared for the Panthers to go 3-13 like Tampa did this year. And the Panthers to be in a full rebuilding mode.. Which means, letting go (Trading, or not resigning) Premier players (Steve Smith, DeAngelo Williams, Peppers, Thomas Davis, etc). I would rather keep Fox, and have a shot at the playoff's next year, before the lockout (2011). The lockout is looking more and more like it will happen.. Be careful what you wish for, we could be a very bad team for years to come.

Why does nobody recognize Matt Moore. You so called fans only see the negative, seems none of you want to see the plus side of anything. You want Brady Quinn who lost his job to Derek Anderson? What about Matt Moore??

Posted by: Virman | Jan 5, 2010 7:29:47 PM

I really dont think there is any possibility of trading Delhomme to any team for anyone. He is to get 12 mil, what team is going to want to pay him that? The Panthers only did it so they could save 2+ mil this season & they needed that 2+ mil desperately to sign draft picks & replacements during the year for all the injuries.

GO!GO!GO!GO!GO!GO!GO...SWEET NEWS!!!!

Authority - Jerry Jones does not have any Draft picks to trade to the Panthers for Coach Fox. He traded away their future for Roy Williams..Cowboys look like the team to beat in the NFC (and 'No' I am not a Cowboys fan). But they have been smoking the competition the last few games. You have to peak at the end of the year. None of the current playoff teams would want to play the Panthers now. Panthers ended the season as one of the better teams. And I don't think, it was only because of Matt Moore, I think the defense played great, special teams, coaching, it all came together.

FIRE THESE STUPID REPORTERS!!!!!!!!!!

By the time they released this story, Holmgren had already been hired as new Brows coach ...

@Wang Chung ,Uhh he is the Browns GM looking for a coach!

Pretty sure it says right in the lede that "a report in the Cleveland Plain Dealer today cites speculation". You do note the word speculation there right? It's called reporting. Sometimes all you got is little stuff. Sometimes you got big stuff. But you report it all so the fans know what you do.

You know I've been lurking these blogs for a while and as far as I can tell most of the people that post here do so for one reason, to be jerks. It's sad really.

Virman - Matt Moore is a good QB (not great).. I agree, he can manage a game, and he needs to learn how to throw the sideline pass better, that is your bread & butter in the NFL.. Simply throwing the ball long down the field, teams can eventually defense against those passes. Matt Moore has upside, which next year, he should get a shot at starting.

I was refering to the headline for the story that caught my eye to click on it, & the headline is "Report links Fox to Browns' job" that doesnt say speculation links it.

I love my Carolina-Jersey connection. Here is a post on NJO.COM. There are more than a few like this post. Giants fans up there still like their old D coordinator. I found it interesting

I like Romeo. Who doesn't? But there's a man out there with all the qualifications. Brilliant Defensive mind. Great communicator. Young enough to stay with us for many years. Friends with management and has strong ties to the organization.

John Fox.

What they are doing to him down in Carolina isn't fair. He turned that team around and plays a system which is perfect for the Meadowlands.

Offer him the DC and Asssitant Head Coaching job. TC has two years left but the last one can be dropped. John Fox gets the D back to form and takes over in 2011.

i want john fox to stay. look what meeks is doing with the defense and the players respect him

Posted by: matt | Jan 5, 2010 7:48:53 PM

Hellfish what happened to all your posts yesterday, stating that Fox wouldnt coach without a long term deal & the Panthers wouldnt budge?
