Peppers' goal: Find right match

Julius Peppers' statement, via agent Carl Carey, on the Panthers' decision not to use the franchise tag on him, making him an unrestricted free agent:

"Last night, I learned that the Carolina Panthers would not restrict my availability during the upcoming free agency period.  I feel good about having the opportunity to visit with other teams.  My goal will be to find the right match for my skill set.  I am thankful for the eight seasons I have spent in the National Football League thus far; and am looking forward to beginning this new phase of my career."

Thomas Davis 3.7

Otah 2.9
Maake or Lewis 3.8
Diggs 1.67
________
total = 13.77
Peppers 22 Million (plus bonuses) minus 13.77 = 8.23 million
I'll take 5 above average players with 8 million leftover over Peppers any day including in his best season. 8.23 million is almost CB or WR francise numbers and above DT franchise. Surely we can improve our team at key spots as well as cover some of our restricted FA's with this amount. I've watched thru binoculars focused on Pep thru the years and tired quickly of him protecting his legs (can't really blame him though) jumping back from collision, hold and grab (as in I'm taking this play off unless they run past me then I'll try) and stand and stare (as in watch the play like he bought a ticket instead of getting over $2,200 per play(conservative estimate and for comparison steve smith got about 1,050/play) cya!!!

Wow, not even a thank you directly to the Panthers organization......classy

Don't let the screen door hit you in the butt.

Good riddance.

I hope the door hits ya where the Good Lord Split ya!
I am so happy he will not be around. Yes, when he plays hard, no one is better. But the problem was, walking into that stadium, for every home game, I had no clue if I would see him play Paddy cake with the Tackle, or come close to breaking the QB's back.

I hate to use it but ("it is what it is"). Remember this is a business and things like this happin.( it never ends on a positive note)Let's move on and focus on making the Panthers better for the upcoming season. I will be curious to see what Pep gets from whomever he signs with. How many #90 Panthers jerseys will you see on E Bay.

Bye!

Posted by: mark | Feb 23, 2010 3:24:49 PM

Congratulations Pepp, you've gotten what you wanted now you will get what you deserve. The Panthers (organization and fans) have been agonizingly patient with you because of your freakish talent. The only consistent part of your game was the apathy with which you approached it and I for one applaud the decision of the team.

Go chase your millions, go be where you want to be but be prepared for a level of scrutiny you have never known and certainly will not be able to handle, regardless of all that freakish talent.

You never had the will to succeed, just a natural gift to and I guess that's what makes you and your story all the more pathetic.

Good riddance.

Panthers fans have no one to blame but themselves. They treated him like an outcast from day one because he wasn't vocal enough. The Panthers just wanted to hold him up one year because they felt they were going to win the Super Bowl this past season based on the season before. Then, they would let Peppers walk having saved Fox and Hurney's job. That didn't happen so now they have to sell Richardson on a new direction before they lose their jobs. He finally had something to stay for and now they won't give it to him but pay someone who gave it all away last season (Delhomme). Such a shame. Julius is a Hall of Famer and will go into it with his new team.

Now, give Moore a long-term contract, Pay Joke Turnoverloomie to leave, sign a veteran backup. Take some of Juliu$$$'s money a sign a proven WR and we are READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL.......

I'm sorry but J.Peppers. don't let the door hit you in the rear...

Posted by: good bye | Feb 23, 2010 3:48:46 PM

Ok, So we let JP walk. Are these guys serious?? We get NOTHING in return.

PantherNation this is SAD. Someone please explain one thing to me. It was b/c we had Pep on the books, that in 15 years of existance we are still left to search for a starting QB! This organization has just taken from hard working people and stuffed MILLIONS in their own pockets. Im left to believe b/c of Pep---We NEVER take advantage of free agency, We have never drafted a Franchise QB and theses morons just let our best player roll! We all knew the Panthers had issues when the SONS left the family business!! and thinkabout it, to go do WHAT??? This Organization puts subpar talent on the field and continues to charge $8bucks for hot beer! We took advantage of some weak NFC teams and had premature success and the BIG CAT just kept getting paid! Of course we all studied EVERYTHING that Peppers did, because he was our BEST PLAYER! Just think about the last couple free agents: Ken Lucas(joke),Sean Gilbert(please)Jake Delhomme(He is horrible)Nail Diggs one bust after the next! I will be very interested to see the moves made since apparantely JP money is availabe. Fox may just QUIT next.

One day this will be looked on as the camel that borke the back between the love affair with the locals and this owner/management team. We are the laughing stock of the NFL right now! Richardson, Hurney and Fox can be lost at sea tomorrow, and it would only mean good things for the Panthers. With these stooges running things, you can bet on yet another 9-7 team that is about as fun to watch as the grass growing. NEXT!!!

Posted by: Fox_is_an_idiot | Feb 23, 2010 3:52:45 PM

What did we do with him besides have up and down seasons? Did we win a superbowl? NO! It doesnt matter how much upside or talent a player has if he doesnt have the heart and desire to put his talent to use. The knock on him coming out of school was that he would take plays off and not show up some games. It carried over for 8 seasons with the Panthers .You never knew going into that stadium if he was going to show up or not. What gets me is the guy grew up here, went to school here, and had a chance to win a championship with his home state.Yet disses his home state. Panthers, go put his money to good use and spread the wealth on players who wanna be here. Its over, lets move on.Good riddance you low life ugly, big ear, no heart piece of sh_ t!

I hope Mr. Richardson will not give Fox and/or Hurney any say in the draft or free agency. They said that Jake gave us the best chance to win. Fox still thinks that. Jake is posion in the lockerroom now. The team and fans see that Matt is so much better.

Posted by: kevin | Feb 23, 2010 3:53:58 PM

We have a sports writer as our GM and a washed up def coord as our head coach. Our President of the team quit last year. Our President of the stadium quit. What should we expect..... So is Jake still married to Jerry's daughter??

Posted by: kevin | Feb 23, 2010 4:06:35 PM

Good grief. Peppers was dumb at UNC-CH and he's even dumber now. What a waste of talent. Who enrolled him into UNC-CH? Hmmmmmm.

For all you morons who are bashing management over this...get a clue. It is not like they did not try to re-sign him for the last two years. He and his dumba$$ agent (or should I say academic advisor) flat out just does not want to be here. What if the team frahchised him no one wanted to take on his insane 20 mill contreact??? Then we are stuck with that on the payroll for 2010. If you guys think you are so smart, then why the hell are you not running a team?

1. Actually, we aren't the laughing stock of the league. Just ask any fan/player of another team. We are actually a pretty good team when Jake the Fake isn't at QB.

2. JP really didn't want to be here. It was time for him to go. Sure, we could have paid him the money, but if his heart wasn't in it, then whats the point. It's not always about the money. Heck, he doesn't even stay in Charlotte or North Carolina for that matter during the off-season.

3. As Fox is going into his final year as Head Coach, be prepared to see him do things that Fox generally doesn't do. Vanilla Fox is switching to Cherry Garcia.

You seem to be confused on your stance, or have used bad examples. You yourself just laid down the reason why Carolina got rid of Peppers. Peppers' salary has single handily made it so that we could not go after anyone in free agency. Peppers' salary would cover paying those players who want to be here. How does it benefit Carolina to sign him?

Peppers doesnt care about Carolina, if they were to franchise him, he would decline a trade to another team, and we would be in the same boat next year. Sounds great! Julius has held the Panthers hostage worse than what Brett Favre did to the Packers.

Its time to move on.
