ESPN's McShay: QB a reach in 2nd round
The Carolina Panthers would be reaching to draft a quarterback with their first pick in the upcoming NFL draft, which falls in the middle of the second round, according to ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay.
Speaking today on a national conference call with reporters, McShay said after the top two quarterback prospects, Oklahoma's Sam Bradford and Notre Dame's JImmy Clausen, who are both projected first-round picks, he doesn't have another player at the position with a second-round grade.
If the Panthers were to pick a quarterback in the second round, McShay said it likely would be Texas' Colt McCoy or Florida's Tim Tebow, but that he ranks both of them no higher than the third round.
Of McCoy, McShay said: "As much as I love his competitiveness, I think he's overrated and I think (adjusting to playing in the NFL) is going to be a big shock to his system."
There are divided opinions about Tebow. Some think he can excel as an NFL quarterback, but McShay is in the group who view Tebow as a developmental prospect who could take two or three years to be ready to play.
"In the first two rounds you have to draft players who can start and hopefully right away, or at least by the second year," said McShay. "The team that drafts Tim Tebow and expects him to play in the first two years, that's just not fair. He's not ready.
"When you talk about taking him in the first and second round, I'd pass. But in the third and fourth round, that's where he's worth it as a developmental prospect."
After releasing Jake Delhomme, the Panthers need a quarterback to backup and/or compete with Matt Moore for the starting position, and potentially to give the team another long-term option.
Two other positions the Panthers are expected to eye in the draft are defensive end and wide receiver. McShay said players with high value who could be available at those positions when Carolina's mid-second round selection arrives are Clemson defensive end/outside linebacker Ricky Sapp, and wide receivers Golden Tate of Notre Dame and Damian Williams of Southern Cal.
McShay noted, however, that the Panthers could be reluctant to draft another USC receiver given how Keary Colbert didn't last and so far Dwayne Jarrett's play has been disappointing.

No tebow-ROLL TIDE ROLL. He cries to much, so does colt. Wide receiver please, Mr. Smith needs some help. Unless Mr. Jarrett can step up! GO PANTHERS!

well I think it would be best for the Panthers to try to go after WR Demarious Thomas(how ever you spell his first name)with there pick, hes tall and fast, a perfect compliment to 89

Many people complain about the mistakes that these kids make. I really like Dunlap; I believe that he would become a great replacement for Peppers. You would need to have a great mentoring program for him thought. Remember that people had issues with Warren Sapp when he was in the draft.

Look folks, Jarrett is NEVER going to be a #1 or #2 receiver. I say that because if he was going to be that person he would have already done it. So it's time we find somebody else to slot into that #2 spot, with the expectations that in about 4 years he can become the #1 replacing Steve. In other words, Jarrett is no better than a #3 at best and never will be. End of story.

As much of an idiot Todd McShay is at looking at true talent. I agree with getting another WR to help Smith, maybe its Golden Tate, maybe its not.
But theres no way Sapp is going to that fall to us. I be surprise if he does, but Did they have the Patriots drafting him in the 1st round or mid 2nd round since they have 3 2nd rounders? Yes they did, but things change.
Sapp to me is more of OLB in a 3-4 scheme.

@ JRG
As much i like the Panthers to draft D.Thomas, hes projected to be a mid thru late 1st rounder.
A.Benn or Marty G are projected to be early to mid 2nd rounders. Both of them as potential to be good. But Marty G is more of a # 2 or WR.
Steve S isn't getting younger, why not get a big body WR in Benn or Thomas, which i hope he falls down to us.

If this guy was so knowledgeabe he would be in a NFL front office.

if tebow isn't ready now......he's not going to be ready. i mean the guy is the MOST experienced you could expect a college QB to be. the only guy i can think of in recent years that played more and played in more big games is probably philip rivers maybe eli manning. if he's not ready he never will be.

@ Big "T" Hosch
Thats why he isn't in any NFL front office.
This is the same man along with M. Kiper saying Steve S will be "nothing" but a punt/kick returner. He had no chance of being a #1 WR.
Jemarcus R is going to be a top 5 QB in this league. LMAO, look how that turnt out.
The Panthers do need to make every 5 draft picks count this yr. Not have players sitting on the bench for 2 or 3 yrs getting paid millions of doing nothing, just saying.

I do agree that a qb should not be our pick. Also, although we need depth on defense, I think we need to draft a solid WR with our first pick. As much as it pains me to say this, lets be honest, we need to draft a WR who will eventually replate Smitty. Steve has been in the league 10 years now, and is in his 30's. Im not saying that he is done anytime soon, but his window of productive playing time is slowly closing. So whoever we pick, I dont want it to be some one who can be our # 2 WR, I think who ever we draft needs to be the future.

As a USC fan in college football
Please Carolina, don't draft anymore USC WRs. Its getting to old, we need a potential #1 WRs each any every yr.
No more # 2 or 3 WRs, who can't stay on the full long enough. Also in a couple of seasons, they are no longer in the league.
We need players that can come in and contribute right away.

With lack of overall team depth. The BEST player avail. is the right pick.

NO WAY Golden Tate is avaliable by our first pick... I still say he's a first round pick.

Call me crazy, but I wouldn't mind seeing Carolina try to trade next year's #1 away AGAIN and pick up a 2nd round WR and DE. I know it sounds crazy, but 1st rounders are expensive as heck and you can still get 1st round talent in the 2nd round at a bargain.
Receivers coming out of college are starting to make a quicker impact than they used to, so we might be able to get a gem here. It would be great if Jarrett turned it on next year and had a breakout season, but you can't count on that. As far as DE, getting Brayton back is a huge help and one more starter/rotational player would be great.
I can't see us drafting a QB in the 2nd round, never even crossed my mind. That sends a message to newly appointed starter Moore AND doesn't address the greatest needs first. One thing Carolina has done in early rounds is addressed what they felt were the greatest needs first. If they shore up WR and DE in the second, they can pick up depth with the other 4 picks (assuming they trade away next year's first again).

Make that 5 picks after the 2 2nd rounders, they would get a later round with the additional 2nd as well.

Panthers will try to trade up into the first round and get a receiver. Matt Moore is the guy, and McCown will be backup. I think DL is next priority but that will be filled with later-round picks. Look for a late first-round WR...maybe Tate or Gilyard.

I say just draft the best receiver you can in the second round and let the young guys compete for who can be the #2 receiver. Their defensive line will do better than most people think. Charles Johnson hasn't just been sitting on his hands back there, you know. He has gotten 10 sacks in the last 2 years as a backup DE.

Tebow. You heard it here 1st. Again.

If we can get D. Thomas 2nd round or Golden Tate we'd be insane not to take them. If we go DE in 2nd round we should get Jordan Shipley in the 3rd. He is a great runner w/ the ball, strong routes and a great returner.
I don't really believe in drafting a QB until later rounds unless its Payton Manning, Matt Ryan or maybe Bradford this yr. Too many busts for tons of money.
Any insight into some good DEs in 2nd anfd 3rd round out there?

Best available player. Just like when they drafted Kahlil or Connor, take the highest rated player on your board - PERIOD. The Panthers' could use depth everywhere except maybe RB, TE and DT. We will always need LBs, DBs, OLs.
WR is a tough one to draft, at least for us -with the exception of #89 & #87 of course. I'd like to see them sign Antonio Bryant. He's a hot head but a heckova player. Remind you of another receiver? Then spend a 3rd or 4th on a player like Armanti.

DEMARYUS THOMAS 6'3 225. The next andre johnson let's make matt moore the next kurt warner!
Posted by: ken | Mar 18, 2010 11:37:12 PM
Demarius Thomas is projected in all (that I've seen) mock drafts to go solidly in the first round, so you can forget him. Golden Tate is probably the best bet, but Benn may fall far enough, too. Interesting note about a couple of NFL.com mock drafts... both only had 6-7 offensive skill players drafted in the first round of 32 picks. Shows you how much more dependable good defensive picks are. After Stefan Lefors, Hunter Cantwell, Chris Wenke, and (another Louisville QB-?), the Panthers have proven they aren't great at drafting QBs.
