Grant likes Panthers; Is it mutual?
Former New Orleans DE Charles Grant put the Carolina Panthers on his three-team wish list of destinations Wednesday, but at the moment, there's no reciprocation.
Grant, appearing on Sirius NFL Radio, mentioned the Panthers, Falcons and Titans among his preferred teams. The 31-year-old said the two NFC South teams are attractive so he could play the Saints twice a year.
From a football standpoint, they could certainly use Grant, who had 5.5 sacks last year and 47.0 in nine seasons with the Saints. But there's also some off-field baggage they'd have to consider (he could still face a league suspension in the StarCaps case), along with their own youth movement.
Grant's agent, Bill Johnson, said Wednesday he hadn't heard from the Panthers but thought they'd be a great fit.
In many respects, it's similar to the conversations about Jets DE Marques Douglas. There's some degree of interest because the Panthers could use a veteran behind kid ends Charles Johnson and Everette Brown. The fact Douglas lives in South Charlotte dovetails conveniently as well.
But one league source described it as "just talking," at the moment, meaning no visits have been set up.
The Panthers might still invest in a veteran end, but if they do, it will likely be later.

Sign him--do something this off season beside watch people walk!!

If we can get him cheap he'll be a good rotational player and be to us what Charles Johnson was on passing downs. Not a bad pickup but I doubt it happens.

I'd like to see us sign Grant. Would be a good veteren player on the line.
In other news, Jake Delhomme has a scheduled visit with the Browns tomorrow. Good luck Jake

Yea,John, we need to sign him before we're scraping the bottom of the barrel for a decent F/A DE !!

What is the difference between him and Brayton?
Posted by: Tyler | Mar 10, 2010 4:58:54 PM
wow. really? we might as well get jason taylor or kearse if that's the case

If you read my post on the Tyler Brayton story, you don't need to read this. Folks, this is all about the money. Due to the uncapped year, which means the teams have NO MINIMUM PAYROLL to meet, anyone over 30 with (which translates to years of service)a large salary is in jeapordy. Because the owners want to save money for the lockout if it comes to that. Read the Feb 22 edition of ESPN mag for insight. They forecast LT would get cut by the Chargers.

Oh yeah, the main point of my previous post is don't expect the Panthers to be aggressive, with the possible exception of another receiver.

LT getting cut was an easy one to see coming...what was harder to envision was the firesale of the Carolina Panthers 2009-2010 roster. At this point, are Smitty and Kasay the only guys on the roster over 30? Barring some unforeseen miracle, it's REALLY hard to envision the Panthers being competitive in the NFC South next year, let alone the rest of the League. Looks like we've conceded the crown to the Saints for now, with an eye on rebuilding for a few years from now.

Panther Dan, it's not a firesale. A firesale is where you get rid of talent. We've cut Kemo, who wasn't going to be healthy, Lewis, who wasn't too good, Diggs and Johnson, who are mediocre at best, and Delhomme, who was horrible.

what are we conceding panther dan.we just got rid of a lot of old dead wood and cap buster poopers.the saints are already losing sharper and his 9 interceptions.so whos the one conceding.

I agree that we really haven't lost much.(Except for Hoover, which I believe was a horrible move)..however I do believe we should re-sign Brayton. BUT....we are doing NOTHING to get any better either...ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!! Somebody from the Panthers organization please tell us what the heck is going on....are you trying to lose the fan base on purpose???? I am really starting to get upset about this!!!!!!!!
Posted by: tc | Mar 10, 2010 8:36:15 PM
@ tc - they are not losing the fan base, just because they let a few old, over-piad players go. Plus, there are no FA's out there that woud help us, this is a very limited FA market due to the CBA. Please get a grip, right now the Panthers are doing great in their off-season moves. Panthers #1 priority is to resign all their Core palyers, period.. DeAngelo, Beason, Davis, Steve Smith, those contracts will add up to well over 100 million. So calm down..

the panthers never spend wildly in free agency.they build their core thru the draft and pick up inexpensive role players like thomas and chris harris.this is the way good franchises do it.the only mistake the panthers make is being too loyal to washed up players and ultra conservative head coaches who play not to lose.

Cats,
I appreciate your company line...really...and I hope you are right. But I don't see it. The Panthers have few draft picks this year and have glaring needs at wide receiver and defensive line....not to mention fullback now that they cut Hoover, who I believe was neither over the hill nor overpaid. I believe in keeping the core together, but nobody can tell me, for example, that the best the Panthers can do to improve the wide receiver position is to HOPE Jarrett is finally ready....how many FA wide receivers did we let go and not even pursue. Are we gonna draft another one and hope he is the answer??? THat's worked real well in the past. Sorry, I am not as convinced that the Panthers are in it to win in 2010.

Look for a mid to upper star to be traded for picks soon... Nothing in writing, it's just a very plausible scenario. If the Panthers want to get younger and fill in the gaps through the draft, then they HAVE to have the picks to do it? The only question I have is who are they going to sacrifice?
Candidates:
WR Steve Smith (Not Likely)
RB DeAngelo Williams (Not Likely)
RB Jonathan Stewart (Possible)
LB Dan Connor (Possible)
TE Dante Rosario (Possible)
TE Gary Barnidge (Possible)
CB Richard Marshall (Possible)
RB Mike Goodson (Not Likely)
WR Dwayne Jarrett (Possible)
