Panthers give QB Moore, LB Davis highest possible tenders -- 1st and 3rd round picks

The Carolina Panthers showed how much they value third-year quarterback Matt Moore and outside linebacker Thomas Davis, giving them the highest possible restricted free agent tenders to keep other teams from pursuing them when the NFL free agency signing period opens Friday.

Both players were given Level 5 tenders, meaning the compensation for any team wanting to bid for them would be first- and third-round draft choices going to Carolina if the Panthers chose not to match any outside offers. Now, there likely will be no offers coming.

Moore received a one-year contract tender offer of $3.043 million and Davis' was $3.268 million.

Moore originally was not picked in the 2007 draft and first went to Dallas as an undrafted free agent before coming to Carolina. He had a 4-1 record as a starter last season after Jake Delhomme was sidelined by a finger injury.

Cornerback Richard Marshall, tight end Jeff King, and defensive tackle Louis Leonard each received second-round tenders. That means a one-year, $1.759 million offer from the Panthers for King and Marshall, and $1.684 for Leonard. They can still shop for other offers, and the Panthers would have seven days to match. If they don’t match, they’d get a second-round pick as compensation.

The Panthers chose Marshall in the second round of the 2006 draft, and he played well last year in his first season as a full-time starter, tying for the team lead with four interceptions and second on the team with 81 tackles.

Carolina put original round tenders on linebacker James Anderson (third round, $1.176 million), defensive tackle Tank Tyler (third, $1.101 million), and defensive back C.J. Wilson (seventh, $1.01 million).

The Panthers will not make offers on kicker Rhys Lloyd, safety Quinton Teal or offensive tackle Rob Petitti, making those players unrestricted free agents, able to sign with any team without any compensation to the Panthers.

The Panthers also tendered league-minimum deals to their four exclusive rights free agents -- wide receivers Kenny Moore and Charly Martin, defensive tackle Nick Hayden and linebacker Jordan Senn.

Does this mean John-oh god, please don't kick it out of bounds-Kasay is going to be the kickoffer?

Seems like a low tender. I hope they match when another team offers a deal...which they will.

I know which paragraph Chandler wrote! It's the one where there are 3 players named and then "making those two players" free agents.

I know which Gantt didn't write, the one not being negative about Moore.

do the panthers really think they can get the production they get from marshall with a rookie second round pick? hope it doesnt come to that...

the original tender on marshall shows how high the team is on captain munerlyn

Posted by: chris | Mar 3, 2010 6:47:01 PM

chris, I think you are right, but I really hope they don't let marshall go for a second round pick. You have to have three good corners. There aren't any corners on the free agent market as good or cheap as marshall, and we def. aren't getting one that good in the second round. If we lose pep and marshall this off season this defense is only getting worse

$3 million for Matt and $13 for Jake... fair deal? guess who will start next year under John Fox

thomas davis also gets a 1st and 3rd tender...

I like Captain,I do,but he isnt tall enough to cover on a consistent basis.Think Ricky Manning Jr. all over again,Captain needs to stick on as a nickleback not a starting cb.

If Marshall is signed by another team this season the Panthers WILL be looking @ the number 1 overall pick whenever the next draft rolls around, not just because they have lost Marshall, but because it makes the defense even weaker without him,now that the Pass rush has taken a hit.

Should have given Marshall a 1st rd tender.

The fact that Moore got such a high tender almost guarantees he will be the starter next year. If nothing he will get a legitimate shot at being the starter. Everyone seems to forget Delhomme's salary is guaranteed, he is going to be on the team no matter what.

jake's gone if they can find a backup to moore. nobody want's to see jake get booed at home games. retire or we'll boo you out of the stadium. not a threat that's a promise.

Amen Joe. Amen!

Zac Robinson as the developmental/project Qb behind Moore and Jake.

Posted by: GhostOfSparta | Mar 3, 2010 7:56:28 PM

No, BG, it means they didn't want to give a mil to a KOS. They'll try and get him back cheaper.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Mar 3, 2010 8:17:13 PM

Haven't any of you heard of reaching? Why pick a loser like Zac Robinson? Screw that. I'd rather wait and draft a big timer with our first rounder (assuming we didn't trade it). We need a freaking WR. I'm sick of saying that every single offseason. Find a good one NOW. Don't reach on some loser.

Captain was one of the best seventh round picks in the entire league over the last few years. At least based on his rookie season. I don't think you guys are valuing a second rounder fairly. That's a great pick.

Posted by: Gamble20 | Mar 3, 2010 8:23:32 PM

Oh one more thing, everybody else is right. The third and first tender on Moore is really encouraging. It shows the coaching staff and ownership believe in him.

Posted by: Gamble20 | Mar 3, 2010 8:25:09 PM

I am afraid a team that needs a quarterback will offer Matt a big time deal and we will lose him. If that happens I am done with this team. I will buy season ticket and sell my tickets to other teams fans.

Posted by: kevin | Mar 3, 2010 8:29:11 PM

The Seatle Seahawks, or the St. Louis Rams would love to give up a first and a third for a proven young QB like Moore. They will offer him a contract similar to the one that they gave the second stringer that took Tom Brady's place and went to Kansas City. We suck!! and we will Lose him because they wont sign him to a real deal.

Posted by: CHUCK | Mar 3, 2010 9:08:37 PM

The first and third tender on Moore makes it a certainty that no other team will touch him. The QB crop in this years draft is the best in 10 plus years. Any team team that needs a QB can find a very good prospect in first round. They could also trade the third pick to move up near the top of the draft to go after Bradford or McCoy.
On the other hand, if another team was dumb enough to match the tender and give the Panthers the required 1st and 3rd picks the Fox and Hurney would be THRILLED with that deal.

Posted by: Jimcat | Mar 3, 2010 9:11:08 PM

Fox and Hurney would just waste the picks. If I was Richardson I would not let these clowns decide anything since this is their last year. Fox still thinks Jake gives us the best chance to win. Send Fox, Hurney, Dalehommie on a one way trip to Hatti.

Posted by: kevin | Mar 3, 2010 9:16:05 PM

for those that think richard marshall is good is crazy, he was burned the most out of all the corners we have and please dont forget we got sherrod martin who can play safety and corner. to all the hurney haters the man is doning a good job not great but good, hell since we been in the nfc south this was the 1st time we was 3rd place, plus the worst record fox and hurney done had together is 7-9, so lay off because we could be the bucs or worst the lions.
