Moore: Panthers' youth movement 'no excuse'

Panthers quarterback Matt Moore said in a telephone interview this afternoon that he's excited for the Panthers' offseason conditioning program to start on Monday. He'll walk into Bank of America Stadium in a new role -- as the starting quarterback.

Despite the role change, he said he doesn't want to seem any different to his teammates.

"I'm going to try and keep everything the same," said Moore, who signed his one-year. $3.043 million offer sheet this morning. "I don’t want it to be different other than just being accounatable and being there for my teammates and things like that. I don’t think I have to change or be different, (but to) just be reliable, perform, work hard, and try and be as prepared as I possibly can for the season."

Moore said he was surprised and sad when the Panthers cut veteran Jake Delhomme last week, which opened the way for Moore to be the clearcut starter without a lingering quarterback controversy.

"I'm definitely sad to see Jake go; he's a good friend of mine," said Moore. "I learned a lot from him and appreciate everything he did for the team and me.

"To be honest, the thought (of Delhomme being released) never crossed my mind. I didn’t think anything of it. When it happened, it was a shock to me. But I understand that’s how the business goes.

"(But) what an opportunity for myself. I've just got to be prepared and start this season the same way we finished last season. That all starts with the offseason workouts. I'm just really excited and kind of stepping back and taking it all in. A lot’s going on. I've to get better this offseason."

Moore stepped into the lineup in the 12th game last season after Delhomme suffered a broken knuckle on the middle finger of his right (throwing) hand. Carolina was 4-7 at the time.

Moore led the Panthers to a 4-1 record, allowing them to rally for an 8-8 finish. He threw eight touchdown passes and one interception in those games. Delhomme had endured his most difficult season as a pro, throwing a career high 18 interceptions.

Moore said he was also sad to see numerous other Panthers'  veterans players released recently, but that he doesn't question the moves.

"It’s been interesting. It’s sad to see them go. But at the same time, I’m not going to second guess Mr. Richardson, Marty Hurney or anybody like that.

"Those guys know what they’re doing. They have a vision of what they want and  and I guess this is how they’re getting there. It’s sad to see but we've got to move on, work with what we’ve got and be ready to go."

Moore said the Panthers' roster depletions are no reason to think the team  can't be competitive next season.

"The youth movement -- that term everyone is using -- that's no excuse," he said. "There are quality guys here. There are going to be younger guys who are going to have to step up and play those roles. That's why we're all here -- to play the game at a high level.

"The challenge is to be consistent. I know we have the guys to do it. I definitely feel we can be competitive."

Moore knows the Panthers are going to add at least one quarterback to either back him up or provide competition. He said he doesn't know how the team intends to address the need.

"I know they’ve got to bring somebody in, possibly in the draft, or an older veteran, somebody to learn from, or somebody who’s been around wouldn’t be bad.

"There have been a ton of names out there. I don’t know how much water (any of) that holds. I'm excited to see who they get and move forward with whoever that is."

I have high hopes for Matt doing very well this season. Do hope for a veteran back-up to be brought onboard and a developmental QB be drafted in either the 3rd or 4th round (according to how the draft sorts out with other teams selecting QBs). I like Jevon Snead as the developmental QB and going to Miami for Tyler Thigpen as vet b/u.

Not a Panthers fan

But Matt M is a classy guy. Im glad hes getting a shot. Also it seems like he wants to be a leader, which is surprising for a person who only started 8 games.

Make the best of it and proved the "doubters" wrong.

With building chemistry with the WRs and TEnds through off season. They can have faith in u in making good decisions with the ball.

Every QB will have ups and downs. But at the end, its all about getting better.

I have high hopes for Matt Moore. And I have high appreciation for the writers for actually writing about the...well...Panthers. See that wasn't that hard.

Okay, so you egotistical bankers drilled our country’s economy into the worst recession EVER, and now you’re trying to tell real managers of real THINGS how to do real things? LOL CUTE! Jesus. ( I’m only talking to the wine-wankers who show up at second quarter and leave at half-time. We ALL KNOW you. Yep, you, the loudest and stupidest BLOOGERS - YEP – YOU AH -- with the most retarded comments… YOU A-holes. AND if you EVER tell me to sit down again when I’m cheering, I’ll splash your face with the finest chili from the finest Stadium chilidog I can find. Amen. Oh, wait, bitching about jacked up the price 3 whole bucks. Hopefully the Fantasy League Fooks will sell their seats. The fantasy for them is to have a running back stop just before the end zone, and cut the finest of cheese… AH’s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG Bankers are such sticks of MEAT! We need a new sponsor.

I know this isn't going to get posted. FU

I don't see why we can't be a good team neither, especially on offense.
QB-Moore
RB-Williams, Stewart, Sutton
FB-Fiametta, Rosario
TE-Barnidge, King, Rosario
LT-Gross
LG-Wharton
C-Kalil
RG-Bernardeau (forgive the spelling if wrong)
RT-Otah

Defense won't be so Shabby either
DE-Johnson, Brown, and whoever they bring in
DT-Tyler, Leornard, Johnson, Irvin, Hayden, Landri
LB-Beason, Davis, Anderson, Connor
CB-Gamble, Marshall, Munnerlyn,
S-Harris, Godfrey, Martin

I honestly believe that Charles Johnson can produce in the 8-12 sack range if given the chance to start and play DE full time. As a 2nd string and rotation player he had 4 sacks last year and 6 as a rookie.

You did great last year Matt. A little rough in a few areas, but that was just inexperience. So that's a good thing as you'll be able to train to be "the" guy this year. I like our chances with you very much. We lost a lot of dead weight (sans Hoover who is never dead weight- I sure hope he comes back)and the new additions will make us better. Good luck Matt. "Quack - quack- quack", or whatever the call is for the Oregon Ducks.

"SECURITY"! "HELP" "SECURITY"! --- Hey guys, "FINALLY!!! =)" is out of his cage again.

Posted by: charlesbright | Mar 12, 2010 7:45:36 PM

hey verman, what about WRs? we have no receivers, our D-line has NO starting experience, and our QB, as good as he's played when given the chance, is still unproven. even with a soft schedule I think we'll struggle in the end. it sucks but its true.

You cant say how the team will play yet. You have no idea who they will get, or how well new plyaers will step up & play. I think the Panthers coaches know more than the people that are saying theyre making mistakes left & right, after all, theyre getting paid & the people posting here arent. I dont get why we have to read about how Moore won 4 of 5 games in every article they write about him. If everyone reading here doesnt already know that they will never learn it.

At least we know we will not be SI's pick to win the Super Bowl. I hate to see the older guys go but am very excited to see what the new guys can do.

Sounds like he has his head on straight. Priority one: Check.

Panthers are in bad trouble they do not have enough offensive starting power and no run stopping defense. The running game is all they have and you need more than just that to go anywhere in the NFL. Good move releasing Delhome, but should of had a QB signed before releasing him. Peppers is now on my team so thank you for nothing. He shouldn't be playing in this league he is a one down play maker. He makes one play the whole game and rests the rest of the game. Big money for a half A** player. Should have stayed with Basketball Bobcats could surely use him. So sorry Panther's fans but you will have to look forward to another 1-15 season and be ready for a big coaching change after next season.

...LMAO @ these fools STILL doubting Matt Moore. Did you not see him play last year? Do you not see his stats to end last season compared to Jake's start of the season?

lol everybody hates Jake and still doubts the kid who put up damn near identical numbers in far fewer games. Are you ever satisfied? What do you want us to do? trade our entire defense for Peyton Manning? Pull a Mike Ditka and trade our entire draft for Sam Bradford? lmao GTFOH!!!

SMH ("shaking my head" for you old farts out there)

get a life and stop whining so damn much. i'm tempted to start maintaining a list of all these so called "fans" complaining now, so that when y'all simple asses start to hop on the bandwagon -- we can call your wishy-washy asses out.

Now...w/ that being said...GO MATT MOORE! AND GO 'CATS!!!

Posted by: Styles | Mar 13, 2010 7:10:16 AM

wow really charlebright, and what did I say that you hate so much. Why don't you and your "guys" hop of my nuts and cry about those who really make negative comments? Maricon!

Posted by: FINALLY!!! =) | Mar 13, 2010 7:34:45 AM

as far as problems with our WR's, i think jake was the ultimate problem with the WR's because he absolutely refused, time and time again, to look at anyone but steve smith... when moore came in we saw moose getting more involved, jarrett actually scored a TD, smith was still smith, but even the TE's like Rosario and King were getting looks! it was a breath of fresh air.

Dude D, I think U need some Vicadin !!

Posted by: nasty704 | Mar 14, 2010 9:55:18 PM

4sho tmack652, M3(in the last 5 games),was hitting receivers that Jake kept missing in his 1st 11 starts. Some people need to just do the damn math !!! Hey, 8 TDs, to 1 int ? I'll take them odds any damn day !!
