Clausen to wear jersey No. 2

Panthers second round pick Jimmy Clausen will wear jersey No. 2. Duplicates already are available by order from the NFL and the team store.

Clausen was projected as a top 15 pick but dropped to the Panthers with the No. 48 overall selection.

He wore No. 7 at Notre Dame, but that number already belonged to punter Jason Baker.

His new number will serve as a constant reminder that he fell into the second round, which he already has said will motivate him throughout his pro career.

Motivbation is a completely natural act. Don't act like you don't do it!

Clausen might as well worn #0 because that's the amount of heismans he won, national championships,BCS wins, and top 10 rankings while at notre shame.

And that matters because......
There are a lot of great qb's that never accomplished any of those feats.

Man, I HATED this guy at Notre Dame. I'm going to have to get over that somehow.

I bet Jimmy motivbates to gay porn.

Who cares about QBs winning national championships in college?

A few QBs in the NFL who didn't win championships in college:

Peyton Manning
Tom Brady (Griese was QB in '97 share)
Philip Rivers
Aaron Rodgers
Donovan McNabb
Eli Manning
Tony Romo
Jay Cutler
Joe Flacco
Matt Ryan
Matt Schaub

Here are a few who did:

Matt Mauck
Chris Leak
Craig Krenzel
Ken Dorsey

Clausen may be great, he may be awful. But honestly, welcome to the NFL, where no one cares about what you did in college.

SM: But what about those felony arrests? Is the coast clear now, so that I can go back to using that other name again?

Posted by: David H | Apr 28, 2010 9:37:27 PM

Lay off Chandler. Yes, his typos are embarrassing and seriously he needs a spell checker, but you don't have to be such a dick about it. Bunch of jerks.

Nice comment SM. Very well said.

Dunno why Panthers fans are hating him so much, we'll see what they're saying IF Clausen makes it big. I LOVE that he's wearing number 2 (though I liked 7 more but oh well). If he really did choose it to remind him of his draft status I actually find that pretty cool.

SM, awesome commentary. Maybe the CO needs to employ you!

every q.b i ever played with was kind of a dick.you kind of have to be an arrogant bossy jerk to lead a team.look at steve young.you can tell he really thinks highly of himself.thats why these guys chose to be q.bs.you cant be a wilting flower.

I'm getting his Jersey. I thought before that he was copying Matt Ryan (not on purpose of course) and it annoyed me. But that story of motivation just thrills me and he has the attitude of a winner! We really struck for Gold with a guy like this! (hopefully his play proves all the haters wrong).

Mark it down: Pike will completely outplay Clausen through training camp and preseason, only to be stuck at 3rd on the depth chart.

That's what Fox and Hurney do.

pike is raw but he went from 4th string to leading his team to a championship.he reminds a lot of people of flacco.

This whole number thing, and equipment managers sitting on vets' numbers, made me wonder:

Who will be the next Panther to have his number retired?

I think the only chance now is #89, if he retires a Panther, but you never know about D.Will, J.Stew, or the Beast if they continue to produce and stick around.

Others' thoughts?

Come on guys give jimmy a chance before letting him down, lets be real panthers fans and back him and all the other new panthers thats joining the team this year!

LETS GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!!

Posted by: drobinson21 | Apr 29, 2010 1:46:04 PM

Scott, what's sad is they should retire #90 but won't do it. Stat, not effort, wise the best Panther to ever play here. But like 5 year old stubborn kids they don't like him so no chance. Just the way the world works in Jerry's backwards mind.

Posted by: Teke | Apr 29, 2010 2:05:05 PM

Why doesnt Claussen just take 7 away from Baker. He's a punter for crying out loud.

Posted by: djfoams | Apr 29, 2010 3:54:04 PM

Why should we retire 90? If anybody's number on this year's or last year's squad should ever be retired, its #89. He's the best player in the history of the Panthers, not Peppers.

Posted by: djfoams | Apr 29, 2010 4:16:23 PM

There are no officially "retired numbers" for the Panthers. Only numbers Miles and/or the Panthers won't issue for the time being.

Posted by: fctileman | Apr 29, 2010 5:09:48 PM

By the way,
It's entirely too early to start retiring numbers. Especially since no one even comes close to an honor like that except Sam Mills.....

Guf's Comments are what scares me the most about the QB "Competition". I don't know who will be the best QB in training camp but It's hard to have confidence that they will play the best regardless of who it is.
