LB Davis returns as minicamp opens

The new-look Carolina Panthers had a beautiful, sunny day for their first practice together Friday morning.

As draftees Jimmy Clausen, Brandon LaFell, Armatni Edwards, Eric Norwood & Co., joined forces on the field for the first time, Carolina also had a surprise appearance by veteran outside linebacker Thomas Davis.

Davis suffered a torn ACL midway through last season and apparently has had a speedy recovery. He participated fully in practice.

Clausen, the former Notre Dame quarterback picked in the second round, looked sharp and accurate with his throws. LaFell, a wide receiver from LSU, dropped several passes. Edwards, the former Appalachain State quarterback-turned-receiver, showed very good, soft hands, catching most everything thrown to him.

Cornerback Richard Marshall didn't attend due to his disatisfaction with not having a long-term contract continued. Coach John Fox said he didn't know how long Marshall's protest could last, but that he knows Marshall is working hard and staying in shape.

Since Marshall hasn't signed his restricted free agent tender yet, the minicamp is not mandatory for him.

Players present who didn't participate because they're recovering from surgery or for other health reasons were left tackle Jordan Gross, right tackle Jeff Otah, defensive tackle Tank Tyler, defensive end Tyler Brayton, running backs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, tight end Dane Rosario and guard C.J. Davis.

Charles, did you get to assess Edwards speed? I know everyone looks fast in shorts and the real stuff starts in late July, but any word on his and the other draftees speed? thanks.

Was Lafell given Carter, Colbert or Moose's old locker? He could be cursed.

What's the practice schedule for tomorrow? Was thinking about walking over and checking the new guys out...anyone know?

How did our STARTING quarterback look? Please do your job and report on what is important to Panther fans - you cease being relevant when you are servile to ESPN and their story lines.

It's a disgrace to mention Moose in the same sentence as Colbert and Carter. Moose was a capable receiver his entire time here save for last year, and it's tough to judge any receiver on last year's numbers considering the poor quarterback play for most of the season.

I work with a guy who is an LSU alum, so I asked about LaFell. He said he had a serious case of the "dropsies" early in his college career, but eventually got better. Hopefully he's not reverting to his old ways.

You can't drop by...all of these workouts are closed to the public.

I don't think this minicamp is open to the public.

GREAT to hear that Davis is back. I was expecting him to miss most of camp and not get up to fully speed until late September or October.

Disturbing to hear that both the tackles are still out. If they aren't healthy, we're screwed.

You can't just walk over and "check the new guys out." These workouts are closed to the public, so we get what we get from the beat writers. I'd check the NFC South blog on espn.com...Yasinskas is at camp.
