RB Stewart on mend after surgery, provides in-depth details about his '09 injury problems

In today's editions of the Observer, Panthers' running back Jonathan Stewart talks in-depth about the Achilles injury that bothered him all last season and the Jan. 20 surgery he hopes will alleviate the pain he played with in 2009.

For the first time, Stewart explained that he had a bone spur pressing into his left Achilles and also suffered from tendonitis and bursitis.

He wasn't permitted to put weight on his foot for the first month after the operation. For the third consecutive year, he'll miss the Panthers' post-draft minicamp and summer school practices, but expects to begin running in June and to be ready for the start of training camp in late July.

Stewart revealed that when last season began -- after he'd sat out all four exhibitions in the preseason -- he and team trainers thought he might not last more than six games before requriing surgery that would've ended his season. Instead, he played in all 16 games and led the Panthers with 1,133 yards rushing, proving his toughness to coach John Fox, who last week called him "one tough cookie."

Stewart also told us that he and fellow running back DeAngelo Williams will try to do even better than last season, when they became the first pair of teammates in NFL history to rush for 1,100 yards in the same season.

As long as he's ready for the regular season. He's already proven for two years despite missing mini-camp and training camp that when it's time to play he does his thing.

not just tough cookie proved to be better than williams last year.

......and we thought he was dangerous last year !

Stewart has definitely proved how tough he is. He proves it when 75% of the time, making the first guy bouce off him (or stiff-arming him into the ground). I just hope injuries don't catch up with him. He has the potential to be great.

He and DeAngelo are going to have the going a little rougher out there without #45 paving the way for them. I hope they will still find their way.

He did not prove he was better than Williams. First off, Williams battled injuries also and missed more regular season games but still as many yards. Secondly, that's based off what? 3 games? Giants run defense sucked saints defense sucked AND benches their starters and the Vikings were missing key starters (but he deserves credit for crushing them). I'm not saying he isn't better but you can't definetly say he is. He hasn't rushed for 20 touchdowns and 1500 yards like Williams has. And you say that now but how many games do we see out of Stewart where he had 14 carries for 50 yards while Williams had 16 for 110?

JStew - aka the Iron Duck.

How dang fortunate is this city to have not one but TWO absolute STUDS in the backfield?

I agree with what you are saying about nobody knows who the better back is now. But I will say Stewart is having a better start to his carear than Williams did. Plus Stats wise last year they were very close.

J. Stew stats
221 1,133 5.1 10

D. Will
216 1,117 5.2 7

And a lot of Stews Runs were from 5 yards or less to the goal line. Which is where the touchdowns and amount of carries are different

Thank god some of the fans from last summer aren't involved in running this team. Who here can remember when so many people left posts saying that we should trade this kid because he is always hurt? I remember, and I thought it was just as stupid a suggestion as I do now. GO J-STEW and CREW!!!

And just think we also have a stud in waiting in Tyrell Sutton. If we only get a second and (hopefully) third receiver....

stewart can wear a defense out.i love dewill but stewart can make holes where none exist.stewart demoralized the giants and vikes last year.

Stewart is a thug, just like smitty, get rid of these thugs and draft good home school white kids, i am sick of the steve smiths, williams, muhammads, i will boycott this team until they draft some white kids from good schools, like duke, stanford..no more thugs
