Singletary: Hudson a better fit in Panthers' D
New Panthers cornerback/special teamer Marcus Hudson should be a better fit for the "Cover 2" defense Carolina employs than he was in San Francisco's 3-4 scheme, says 49ers coach Mike Singletary.
"The more physical he can be, the better," Singletary told the Observer during the NFL meetings in Orlando, Fla., last month. "In terms of (playing in) more of a Cover 2, Tampa 2, I think he would really excel. I think it gives him an opportunity to compete and use his tools a little bit more."
Cover 2 corners generally are called upon extensively in run support and to play press coverage on receivers at the line of scrimmage.
"He's a great special teams guy," said Singletary, adding that Hudson can play cornerback or safety and is "very valuable" in the nickel and dime defensive packages.
Hudson, a former N.C. State standout, was a restricted free agent who wasn't tendered by the 49ers and subsequenbtly signed with the Panthers. He played in 58 games for the 49ers over the past four years, but had no starts.
"We just felt right now (because) we knew Marcus wanted to play, and the position he played, we were pretty good in those areas and he was looking behind someone all the time, we wanted to give him an opportunity," Singletary said.

Yaaaarg. You know it's a horrific offseason when the local guys are forced to extoll the virtues of Marcus Hudson.

You guys are wrong. Hudson can play. Like the article says, the defense in SF was a bad fit for him. Hudson is a great athlete and has a nose for the ball i.e. interceptions.

Thanks for the article on one of our newest additions. My opinion is that many of our fans are calling for signings. For those of you who fill this boat, please do some research (and I have). If you browse the other NFL teams active rosters and compare these to ours, You will notice many teams lack quality starters, depth and youth in comparison. The Panthers RB, OL, TE depth is outstanding on the Offensive side of the ball. Defensively we are deep at LB and DB. DL could use depth. QB as well. WR is one of our only positions that is void of a true starter opposite of Smith. Special teams play suffered last season and this seems to be where the Panthers Staff's attention has been devoted. As a team we have added 4-5 strong contributors in each draft over the last 5 to 6 years. I can not think of many teams who can boast the same level of success. We will be fine! It's is a new era in Carolina and this should be enough to excite any fan. We enter this season with a very young and talented team and I personally am very anxious to watch this team compete!

Are the Panthers going to draft, or if undrafted, sign some of the following players that seem to have very good special teams numbers?
LB/TE-Jameson Konz (6-3 1/2, 234, 4.38-40, 46 inch vertical)
FS/WR-Quentin Scott (6-3 7/8, 224, 4.40-40)
S/QB-Michael Greco (6-2 7/8, 224, 4.40-40)
WR-Kelton Tindal (6-2, 197, 4.28-40)
PR/KR- Trindon Holliday (5-5 1/4, 165, 4.21-40, "official" 4.34-40)

Good George, stay home. Not sure how you could call Williams and Stewart thugs. Or is that what you call all black people. Racist Idiot.

I'd hate to sit behind George at a game...that big pointy hood would be tough to see over.

Don't be so dumb, just ignore him.

Coming from a Niners diehard, you guys got a decent player in Hudson. He's a back up type who has potential to be a decent starter in a perfect situation, but will never be a pro bowler. He' couldn't crack the lineup when we were in desperate need need of a nickel, which led to the signing of Bly. Singletary is a consummate professional who truly cares for his players, so take his comments with a grain of salt. Hudsons greatest contribution is likely to be special teams, where he is solid.

@josh smith
I hope you were being sarcastic as Andy was. If not you come off as the dummy on this one.

Maybe they beef him up and put him back there in the backfield with Harris and dump that idiot Charles (scrawny missing plays) Godfrey.

Wow obviously and good thing there has been some comments removed because this string makes no scense to me. Anyway Singletary has never seemed to be a politician to me so I would take him at his word. Ok lets see what this guy has got.

I am sure we will sign more people after the draft - at that point teams will be cutting players because needs have been filled. I dont understand why people are panicking right now over this.

Thank goodness they do tell us about every signing and not just ones that are considered a big splash. It is these special teamers and backups that are hard to find out about. You can read about the big free agents on a thousand web sites.

Goldent Tate is the next Steve Smith?? As long as he is not as hot-headed. He should be available when the Panthers pick.
