Clearing up Panthers scouting change

Despite a report this afternoon saying the Panthers fired scout Pete Russell, the reality isn't nearly as sensational as it sounds.

The note on profootballtalk.com also insinuated age discrimination in the termination of the 45-year-old Russell, who's been with the team three seasons.

According to the Panthers media guide, they have three scouts older remaining on the payroll: 61-year-old John Peterson, 52-year-old Jeff Morrow and Jeff Beathard, who will turn 46 in two weeks.

Russell was the one member of the Panthers scouting department whose contract expired this year, and his deal was scheduled to end on June 30, 2010. The Arizona-based scout was informed this week his contract would not be renewed, and began spreading the word to other personnel men around the league, who confirmed the move.

The rest of the Panthers scouts got two-year extensions last year, which carry them through the 2011 draft. While many personnel contracts around the league run through the end of May, the Panthers have always carried their scouts through June.

Panthers officials confirmed Russell was gone but wouldn't comment otherwise. Calls placed to Russell weren't immediately returned.

I think the team will be good this year, but the future is starting to look murky. I hope Jerry has a plan the includes signing these young guys. I worried that the labor situation is going to cost them much of their core.

Thanks for that clarification Darin. I see why this tabloid lured you in now (and why YOU are writing all the reports). Keep this up, and I won't have anyone to criticize.

This was good reporting. Mike Florio is an idiot. He makes all these sensational claims about the Panthers and they are so off base. I suggest you read the article after reading this forum.

hurney and the panthers run a topnotch front office. the moves that have been made are to keep the young nucleus intact.

Blackkat, I agree, the young core is beyond solid. The have the makings to create a good team for the next 8 years. The CBA could really kill the longterm plans ofthis team.

Steven, as soon as I set my eyes on their new leader, I knew fans would lose out and that the NFL would never be the same. People with egos that big (so big it rips into all those that are associated with them) should be ostracized for the greater good.

Anyway, look at what the NFL Network (via NFL.com) has to say about Jordan Pugh:

----"The Patriots continue to add athletic players to their secondary with the selection of Jordan Pugh. Though New England has a roster full of young talent at the position, Pugh is another competitive player to throw into the mix. He will have to earn a spot as a backup/special teams standout."

What excellent coverage, eh?
