Panthers RFAs sign tenders; Davis update

Panthers LB Thomas Davis and CB Richard Marshall each signed their one-year restricted free agent tenders Tuesday, the team announced.

The deals were essentially formalities, as both had been here working out -- in Davis' case, for most of the spring.

Davis will make $3.268 million this year and Marshall $1.759 million. Both would have been unrestricted free agents under the old labor rules, but were stuck thanks to changes that came along with the uncapped year.

-- Speaking of Davis, it sounds like we'll know more about his condition tomorrow.

He tweaked his right knee during an individual drill Tuesday morning, the same knee in which he tore the ACL last November. Davis walked off the field under his own power, alongside head trainer Ryan Vermillion.

Some tests were performed Tuesday, but more are pending, and that casts an ominous note on the proceedings.

If he's out any amount of time, it will thrust trade acquisition Jamar Williams to the fore, and again make them incredibly thin at linebacker.

Williams was picked up in the deal that sent SS Chris Harris to Chicago.

Update 7:44 p.m.: WBTV's Nate Wimberly got a great shot of Davis going down. Seeing it again only raises the concern. Take a look here.

we need to get davis signed long term.i think we may as well forget about marshall.hes a good, not great corner.in the tampa 2 system you dont need great corners.marshall will be asking for elite corner money.bye bye.maybe the browns or lions will be dumb enough to give it to him.

Yeah, ray, that sounds like a good plan. Sign up a guy who's coming off a devastating knee injury that can't even make it through a week of non-contact practices.

Come on, man!...TD is a gamer...he'll be ready to play by the time the season starts...somebody needs to tell him to stop overexerting himself before he's fully healed...we all know he works hard; he doesn't have anything to prove...let him sit back, chill out, and rehab...that's all he needs to focus on right now.

Nice excet why does Trotter continue to refer to some of these guys as kids? What is she 18?

You got to remember he is a linebacker, want's his knee got hurt he would never be the same player,Because he is hurt again,The Panthers do not need to sign him to a long term contract,He is going to be another Dan Morgan.

Thanks for that coverage. Bad news. As soon as it was reported how FAST HE WAS COMING BACK FROM HIS INJURY, I was concerned somthing like this might happen. Even one of the posters complained about that. This is very unfortunate and I hope they are more cautious with him now. Two wrongs don't make a right.

This is concerning, but everything I've heard about Williams is he is more suited for TD's side as linebacker anyways. TD will just have to slow down so it can fully heal, and where do you get a Dan Morgan Comparison? Morgan suffered from concussions...a situation he could die from or have serious long term complications. TD just needs time to heal. He will be fine given that..

Im a beast.

Marshall is undersized and overrated. The tender is all he deserved at this point.

Maybe now people can STFU about Davis being all the way back already. He's been pushing too fast too soon, and hopefully it's not biting him already.

TD - rest, recoup, and be ready to go in September, not June.

My God, I actually agree with Procto. And how are they thin at LB? Conner hasn't even had a chance to get on the field, then they still have Anderson and this Williams guy.

They need to move Richard Marshall to Safety and get rid of that wanker Charles Godfrey. He sucks and wouldn't make any other team in the NFL but yet is our starter? C'mon man

I called this one. Davis was coming back WAY too fast. He should not have been out there until at least training camp, if not later. He's gonna be done for the year.

they're doing the right thing by signing NOBODY longterm right now. until a new cba is in place, there are several teams shooting themselves in the face right now by giving big money to young guys long term. not to mention this isn't basketball or baseball where the teams are smaller and players primes can be 10+ years on the regular. this is football.......3-5 year lifespan.

Did anyone else try to pull up the WBTV video and get a 'no longer available' msg? Didn't take long for the Panthers to censor that, what a joke.

Posted by: Hurneyblows | Jun 9, 2010 1:35:26 PM

I pulled it up and watched it...no problem.

Posted by: Jrauhauser | Jun 9, 2010 2:44:52 PM

Same here... I could watch the vid without problem. The way TD immediately dropped and grabbed his knee looks serious! I hope it isn't!

Posted by: Rodger | Jun 9, 2010 3:51:36 PM

Pretty safe to assume that he was rushed back before he was ready. He had no business running 40's or taking any part of practice until training camp at the earliest.

another smart move by fox.letting a guy 8 months out of acl surgery be on the field without even a brace.i think fox is trying to get fired.
