LaFell stunned by promotion

WR Brandon LaFell was pleasantly surprised.

QB Jimmy Clausen was relieved there were no surprises for him.

The Panthers rookies talked a few moments ago about their paths this camp, which have taken different turns.

LaFell said he didn't expect to be running with the starters this soon, but he's also confident he belongs.

"I was real surprised," he said of his promotion for the moment.

The Panthers are still rotating players and looking combinations, but LaFell's been a quick study.

So has Clausen, who has been splitting his work with the twos with Hunter Cantwell. The biggest relief for him, however, has to be that his hair's intact. He laughed when asked if he had a Tim Tebow-haircut under his hat, saying he was happy not to have endured any such hazing.

We'll have more on both of them in tomorrow's papers, and more from practice this afternoon.

I imagine the coaching staff wants to take a look at LaFell while Smitty is out and see how he responds under pressure. I hope he does well.

I hope Panther put a good pro-football game at home, it is very disappointing when you spend time and money and end up with a college caliber game and right now our front seven can't stop the run. I hope coach Fox got something special to show us why he is a coack!

Ike:
How do u know our front 7 can't stop the run? We haven't played a game yet. If your referring to last year, our team played much better against the run in the 2nd half of the season. If your talking about the current roster, well, we don't know yet. All signs point to them being much better than expected.

Not bashing you...just saying please be patient before posting those types of comments. I'd b surprised if some of the players don't check these boards from time to time. I want them to feel confident until it is proven that they shouldn't be.

I'm just sayin...

Yo Ike, were you @ Fanfest ??They were stopping the run pretty damn well..........

Since John Fox has been here I havent seen a college caliber team out there. Maybe the year before he got there. despite all the negativity we defintely have a top 10 organization in the league, and we would all appreciate if you held your negativity to yourself until you have a valid point to make.

Posted by: zach | Aug 10, 2010 3:48:29 PM

I agree, most negative bunch I have ever seen. With such a large bunch of XPERTS don't see why the Coaching ranks in the NFL are not mostly Panther fans.

I agree with rawjem, nasty704, zach and shoz on all of your statements. From what I heard from saturday's fanfest the Defense performed quite well. Haven't played a game yet and already negativity from a select few Panthers fans. I've never seen anything like it. Like someone mentioned get the facts straight before making such inaccurate statements.

Top ten team? That is funny. We are at best in the bottom five int he league. When we are sitting at 1-8 we will be hearing a lot of these rose colored glasses guys changing their tune. Our roster is MUCH worse than last year. That is not even in question if you know anything about the game.

I'm looking forward to the 2010 season with high hopes for the Panthers. Hope Smittys arm heals well and ready for play. I also hope he has help on the other side and Moore shows everyone he's the man!

What's the deal on D. Jarrett? No news seems to be bad news for him!!!

Posted by: Todd | Aug 10, 2010 5:55:51 PM

Moore will get the job doen, running game will flourish..Beason will only get better and watch Conner step it up this year. Jerry will be sorry he didn't sign Fox this year cause it is gonna cost him next year. panthers 10 win 6 losses and playoff bound

Shut the hell up Bernz. And yes you're an total idiot.

Posted by: Kev | Aug 10, 2010 11:36:34 PM

Ok Kev, our team is younger than last year. But trading Delhomme alone automatically makes us better. Also Panthers are onna the few teams in the league that can lose either RB (D Will or J Stew) for an entire season and the other will still put up great #s.

Posted by: Smitty89 | Aug 10, 2010 11:43:31 PM

bottom 5 in the league?? ur an idiot raiders, rams, seahawks, chiefs, lions, bears, bucs, jags, cardinals, bills, dolphins, browns, are ALL def worse. teams like giants, eagles, skins, broncos, 49ers, texans, titans, and even the jets are about as good as panthers.

Posted by: Smitty89 | Aug 10, 2010 11:49:40 PM

There are just plain ignorant idiots out there that don't know apples from oranges. Many, many players who became somebody were NOBODY at one point in their career. This could be the case for a many or our front four.

Lets look a couple of things from Fanfest one positively and one negatively. On the negative side. Our offensive line was playing with a line that was partially make shift.

ON the bright side. Our O-line (including Subs) are one of the best lines in the league. So our D-line shut them down. That should say alot. Tons.

Go Panthers

panthers are going to stink, maybe go 1-15 when they had wienke, this team has the same talent level as the seifert team who went 1-15, clausen should start, they shoudl have kept peppers and jenkins and rucker, they should have traded smith for trade value..bad gm and coach decisions will ruin this team fro years

I don't understand why fans can't be at least "glass half full" people at least the first of the year. The Panthers could be better than last year, even with the loss of some starters, because some of those starters had issues at least part of the time (interceptions, poor special team play, taking plays off). Plus we're playing a weaker schedule. So lighten up and try to be happy about football season being here!!!

Hey "callingitlikeiseeit"

Bro, whatchubeensmokin??

Posted by: Chuck | Aug 11, 2010 2:54:47 PM

Well said Ron. We should all be stoked. 10-6 or 11-5. Super Bowl Champs 2011!!!

Posted by: PantherFanD | Aug 11, 2010 5:34:59 PM

1-15 talent level? with arguably the best RB tandem in the league. STFU

Posted by: Smitty89 | Aug 11, 2010 5:49:33 PM
