Panthers release Leonard

The Panthers released defensive tackle Louis Leonard Tuesday, cutting bait on a guy who never reached expectations here.

Leonard was dogged by knee and ankle problems through the offseason, and failed to live up to the potential he showed last year. He played well in two games, with 11 tackles and a sack before breaking his ankle on the final defensive snap at Atlanta.

His departure means they have a spot on the 53-man roster, and still more questions than answers at his position. They start Derek Landri and Ed Johnson, and have Nick Hayden and undrafted rookie Andre Neblett in reserve. It also leaves them with nothing to show from the 2009 trades for him and Tank Tyler, who was released before the opener. They gave up fifth- and sixth-round picks in this year's draft to obtain them.

say all you want about hurny and fox but we have all of our first round picks since they've been here with the exception of dan morgan who retired from concussions and julius peppers who played here for 8 years.

2002-julius peppers
2003- jordan gross
2004- chris gamble
2005- thomas davis
2006- deangello williams
2007- jon beason
2008- jonathan stewart and jeff otah

you can't name another team that's had that kind of success in the first round. you can't be perfect all the time so shut the hell up and stop your bitching. it's the nfl, shit happens all the time. if you're not gonna support then go jump on someone else's bandwagon. look at their situation, they had barely any experienced players coming in including at quarterback. they only problem with this team is jeff davidson. he is an idiot. ron meeks is a great coach that is under rated.

Bashar, i think just about everyone would agree that our best draft years have been under Fox and Hurney. But the on-field product has been extremely disappointing ever since the Arizona playoff game. Fox's gameplans are ridiculously predictable and he is almost always out-adjusted at halftime by the opposing coaches. I'll give Fox credit for giving us some nice pieces to work with thru the draft, but we need a new head coach and offensive coaching staff to bring it all together and make a winning product. Getting rid of Davidson isn't enough, he just does what Fox tells him to do. They're a package deal.

Probably making roster space for Trent Edwards. We put in a waiver claim on him today along with 5 other teams.

THANK YOU BASHAR!!! FINALLY! Yeah, these guys have pulled some pretty questionable moves from time to time, but overall, I think there's way more good than bad in terms of personnel.

Not that I'm a conspiracy theorist, but I've come to believe that this year is Richardson's way of holding both Fox and Hurney accountable. Follow me for a second here.

FACT - Ownership wants a winning PROGRAM, not winning seasons. Big Cat wants consistency.

FACT - Fox has had three winning season during his time here. Some seasons had issues, like the injury bug of 2004 and Jake going down. But all in all, Fox hasn't been consistent.

FACT - Fox's QB let him down last year and against Arizona at the end of the 2008 campaign.

That brings us to now, and something tells me that Big Cat told Fox, "You're under contract, and you've built this team over the years through the draft to be what you wanted. You want to be a head coach here next year? Win with it."

just another stupid fan that believe any thing told them....you cant win with first rounders alone..you got to hit on late picks as well..just about every team knows who the best players in the draft is..but 2..3 4..5and 6..7 round this where the draft is made..

Posted by: sdot | Sep 28, 2010 5:32:00 PM

Scott, if Big Cat wants consistency, that is exactly what Fox gave him. Never less than 7 wins, usually in the hunt. Big Cat wants more than one up season, followed by one down season.
Bashar, I agree with you, Davidson is horrible. While I agree that the first round has been good, we haven't hit it big in the later rounds often enough to sustain a winning team. Last years moves were in response to injuries along the line, and they did what they had to do to get guys in here to be competitive. I'm not going to say the moves were for nothing.

i meant to post one time so dont say anything smart mouth people

Posted by: jamie | Sep 28, 2010 5:52:36 PM

Yeah I'm thinking its time for Hurney to go, I mean all this time to find another wr and you couldn't find that one yet? To let the D-line, which was suppose to be our bread and butter just drift off over the years? Why? They talk about keeping an identity but they lose focus on those very things. I mean...Richardson claims he wants to be like the Steelers, GUESS WHAT?! Steelers are 3-0!

Posted by: Tman | Sep 28, 2010 5:54:49 PM

Few people will argue with the front offices ability to pick in the 1st round. Where we fail in the draft are later picks. And we also have failed lately with game planning and execution.

Posted by: Clay | Sep 28, 2010 6:08:14 PM

So, 2 guys acquired in emergency trades for bottom-tier draft picks being released because it's not longer an emergency is grounds to criticize? Okay...

Posted by: KCPanther | Sep 28, 2010 6:10:55 PM

I agree it's the Offensive Coordinator who can't get a damn thing out of all of that talent we have. Who know's, some of the ones that we consider busts may have lived up to their billing under another coordinator's scheme. Jeff Davidson sucks a$$ and it continues to show. I could pick some offensive plays off of any Madden Football game and have better success than him.

No we didn't put in a claim for Trent Edwards, yahoo sports was wrong (what else is new) but it makes you wonder if we are making room for another DT. Skins fans have started a rumor involving Haynesworth and Steve Smith but hey its only a rumor.
