Fox has faith in Schwartz

With Jeff Otah experiencing a setback in his recovery from two surgeries on his left knee, the right tackle job is Geoff Schwartz's for the next two or three weeks. Schwartz started the final three games for Otah last season, including the Panthers' 41-9 handling of the New York Giants in their last game at Giants Stadium.

"We've got a lot of confidence in Geoff Schwartz. He's a starter in our mind, and he did last year," Panthers coach John Fox said Friday. "We'll see how it goes. Obviously, we'd like to have Jeff Otah up, but it's part of the game. Schwartzy's got to step up."

Fox said Schwartz brings versatility to an offensive line that has some questions marks behind the front five.

"He's very smart. He can play both guard and tackle. Primarily lately, we've used him at tackle. But moving forward, he's capable of playing the guard position, as well," Fox said. "So this week we'll be calling upon him to be right tackle and go from there." ....

There were no changes to the injury report. The three players who did not practice all week -- Otah, running back Tyrell Sutton (shoulder) and linebacker Jordan Senn (ankle) -- are listed as out for Sunday's game against the Giants. Defensive end Tyler Brayton (ankle) is probable. ...

Following Friday's light practice, Carolina players had the blue carpet rolled out for them. Staff members, all wearing grey Panthers' T-shirts, cheered players as they walked across the blue carpet making their way back to Bank of America Stadium from the practice fields.

The "spirit walk" and T-shirts were the Panthers' way of participating in the NFL's $50 million marketing initiative called "Back to Football." Panthers president Danny Morrison, who was wearing a Panthers' T over a collar shirt, viewed it as a good team-building exercise, as well.

"Our whole staff is a very important part of the team," Morrison said. "They do it without a lot of fanfare, and they're a critical part of our organization."

We are thin at LB and start the season even thinner? At least the CO could have told us who are taking those roster spots for week one.
Well Joe, who are taking those spots?
