Carolina DB's discuss crackdown on big hits

Panthers defensive backs Captain Munnerlyn and Sherrod Martin were discussing the NFL’s crackdown on vicious hits following Wednesday’s practice – specifically, how difficult it will be to change the mentality of players accustomed to going for the big hits.

Martin was asked how he was taught to tackle as a kid.

“Keep your head up,” Martin replied, “but …”

“Kill ‘em,” Munnerlyn interjected.

Besides causing concussions and possible long-term memory loss, those kill shots now will come with an additional penalty as the NFL has vowed to suspend players for illegal hits to the head.

Martin was fined $5,000 for such a hit on New York Giants tight end Kevin Boss in the season opener. Boss sustained a concussion on the play, which did not draw a penalty but was described as a “dirt-bag move” by the Giants’ Travis Beckum.

Martin said he understands why the NFL reacted to last weekend’s spate of violent hits, calling it a “business” decision to protect the league’s players. But Martin said he’s not going to alter his approach.

“I think you continue to play the game as you always played, and things just happen. If you change yourself too much, then it can take away from you,” Martin said. “So you just try to make a play to the best of your ability within regulations and go from there.”

The key phrase there is “within regulations.”

The NFL has rules in place to protect defenseless players from getting drilled in the head. Now it’s up to the league to start making an example of those who choose not to follow them.

I hope we goes 0-18 so we get first round pick!! we shud trade Smith while he good for a second round pick so we can get a good receiver! Fox must go!!! he can go with Richardson and Daviidson!!! we get 3rd round pick for them! Sallery cap will be good next year so we afford a good coach! CHIN POWER!!!!! Next year we pay all the players to sit out anyway. We dont need a coach, save money!! save cap space by not hiring Chin till 2012!!! We should trade Williams for 3rd round pick!, we get good rb in 3rd round!

With the Panthers track record of drafting/developing WR's it would be a stupid ideal to trade Smith. Even though he deserves a chance to win a title.

Williams will bring back more than a 3rd round pick. A 2nd,4th, and a 6th round pick is good value for Williams.

Bill C isn't going to want to come to a rebuilding team. I doubt JR will make the same mistake of overpaying another HC, who hasn't coached since 2006.

As well give him full control of the team, one boneheaded move by Cowher and the whiny fans will throw him under the bus.

I don't think the Panthers db's have to worry about the new rule.

This team will never amount to more than a pile of beans. We need a whole new team. We should trade our team and next years draft for the Falcons team.

Every time there is an article that is borderline critical of the Panthers some pitiful little man has to post the obligatory "we're lucky to have a team, stop complaining" comment. SO SICK OF IT!! We have an NFL in Charlotte. Deal with it! Just like Tampa Bay, just like Green Bay, just like St. Louis. Get over your freekin inferiority complex and see the trees through the forest! We're in the game, come to terms with it, and accept that now that we are at the table, we demand a level of professionalism. If the team doesn't perform on the field, boo em. If the team management is dropping the ball, call em out. That's the big leagues, kids. I love that we have a team, but I don't feel lucky for it. We've paid for it, and we continue to pay for it season after season. It's not a gift, it's a business. We support it. If you can legitimately question whether it's holding up its end of the bargain...ladies and gentlemen that's fandom, and we have arrived!

To be honest... these rules are getting a lot of attention but I really doubt it will change much. Sure there will be a suspension that gets a ton of attention now and again.. but come on. Its not that big of a deal.

LOL at James Harrison IM GONNA RETIRE. Boo Hoo! No you aren't! Only an idiot would pass up that much money.

I just dnt understand y u wud draft a quarterback an try 2 convert him 2 your #1 or #2 reciever....and never use him for anything. The big issues in carolina are quarterbacks and recievers so jus imagine Armanti Edwards behind the snap for a few plays..tell me u dont want to see that?!?! have u seen the guy in college??

Jim Harbaugh for our new coach!

Martin is right--keep the head up--but Robinson went running full force with his head down when he should have kept his head up.

When you see that head go down and full force ahead you know someone is going to be taken down.
