Panthers claim another WR

The Panthers claimed former second-round pick Devin Thomas off waivers Monday, adding another body to the mix at wide receiver.

Thomas, a 2008 second-rounder (34th overall) from Michigan State, caught 40 passes for 446 yards and three TDs in two seasons with the Redskins, before being waived Saturday.

At 6-foot-2, 218 pounds, he gives them good size. And hey, with the current state of their receiving corps, what can it hurt?

To make room for him on the roster, they released backup offensive lineman Tim Duckworth.

In keeping with Jerry's philosophy, I am now in off-season lock-out mode. In other words, why bother and who cares?

Posted by: Brent | Oct 11, 2010 4:39:14 PM

who is going to throw him (or anyone else) the ball?

Posted by: Ed | Oct 11, 2010 4:40:49 PM

once we get otah back this is gonna be a new team

Posted by: jeremy | Oct 11, 2010 4:44:19 PM

you mean IF we get Otah back...

Posted by: dw | Oct 11, 2010 4:47:13 PM

I'm afraid it's going to take more than Otah to save this team!!!

Don't blame the players, don't blame the coaching. From what I understand Jerry Richardson is leading the lock out cause for the owners. Thus not picking up any marque players this off season (free agency). So now all the PSL owners and Panther fans will suffer thru one of the worst season's the Panthes will have. So Jerry when you send me my bill for PSL's tickets this off seaon maybe I or 69,000 other Panther fans want send in any money. It want just be bad this season, but probably for 3 more years to come. Why don't you sell the team. Your pockets are not deep enough for me.Where is the emphasis on winning the superbowl Jerry?

Honestly im just as down as the restof you with the teams performances, but that being said this move excites me. The guy is a good returner and has good speed. I know clauson looked bad but who's looked good? D. will and....o ya thats it. Look davidson has to let the rains go a bit and let the kid throw the ball on downs they may not expect us to throw. How about helping the kid out and throwing some screens...and not just to running backs. TE's catch too and matbe slip a WR into the back field and fool the defense for once instead of lining up and saying "hey guys were gona run the ball!" or"hey its 3rd and 8 i wonder if were gona pass the ball?" Im just sayn. Off coords are supposed to help out rookie qb's not put them in your gona fail mode. Anyway, im glad they claimed this guy. Reminds me of steve smith. Just gota piss him off to getm motivated.

You Have to Agree though Thomas is currently the Best reciever on the active team minus Smith its still a freebie......

See the following:

Panthers claimed WR Devin Thomas off waivers from the Redskins.

Thomas is worth a flier for any receiver-needy team, but the fit is odd. Though Thomas hasn't had any DUI arrests, his pedigree is similar to fellow former second-round flop Dwayne Jarrett's as a talented underachiever. Don't look for Thomas to pass David Gettis or Brandon LaFell on the depth chart prior to Steve Smith's (high ankle sprain) return. Heading to an extremely run-heavy offense, it's not a good long-term landing spot for the immature 23-year-old.

That gets me real excited

Good signing to me, Thomas should help Smith out alittle.

Smith at #1 WR
Thomas at #2 WR
Gettis at #3 WR

Would help only if Jeff D and John F is willing to get creative, but wishful thinking on my part.

Maybe next year they won't have to draft another receiver, just focus of DT, CB, OLine(good quality ones at that) LG and RG.

Also a new coaching staff who is agressive, creative, can make halftime adjustments.

How long will it be before #89 turns Devin's lights out?

Posted by: AJ | Oct 11, 2010 5:13:35 PM

True that get creative! Fn idiots! The days of lining up in a this is what were doing try and stop us wont work with this talent. duh

Posted by: Randy | Oct 11, 2010 5:15:40 PM

Whats funny to me when they go shotgun formation, is why do they have the receivers all bunch up?

Spread them out, which leads to not facing 8-9 man fronts everytime. Also do a quick slant, comeback route or screen instead of looking for the homerun play.

Basically getting a 1st down to keep the chains moving. Wish I could be the GM or head coach.

Devin to me wasn't giving a fair shot with Mike S. Knowing Mike S ego and stubborness he even doesn't like you or he sees you don't have it.

But he is immature, which 23 year old isn't? Maybe a fresh new start with do him good, just like every other player teams get rid of.

Posted by: adam carter | Oct 11, 2010 5:24:02 PM

don't blame the players? Come on,they are the ones on the field, the owners own,the coaches coach ,and the players play the game. Why not try Armanti at QB more,he looked like the best option to me!Stop blaming the owner.Haven't we been here before with the Hornets,I bet you would love to have the Hornets now!

Posted by: DHARDEN | Oct 11, 2010 5:32:15 PM

Why not at this point. Hopefully Thomas will realize this is maybe his only chance left and apply himself. He does have the measurables and speed to help if he really works hard. We'll see.
