Williams, Smith sit out Wednesday practice
On the day when newly acquired receiver David Clowney made his practice debut, the Panthers were without their two biggest offensive playmakers.
Leading receiver Steve Smith, who sustained a high ankle sprain in the third quarter against New Orleans, and leading rusher DeAngelo Williams (illness) were among the players who did not practice Wednesday.
Smith wore a protective boot on his left foot Monday, when he said he was having difficulty walking.
Starting safety Sherrod Martin, who sustained a concussion against the Saints, and tight tackle Jeff Otah, who has missed all four games since his second knee surgery in August, also were out.
Reserve linebacker Jamar Williams, who injured his neck against Cincinnati two weeks ago, was limited.
Clowney, placed on waivers by the New York Jets, was signed Tuesday to take the roster spot of Dwayne Jarrett, the former second-round pick who was let go following his second DWI arrest early Tuesday morning.
Clowney was wearing No. 87, the jersey worn by Muhsin Muhammad until he retired during the offseason.

Someone needs to get Clowney a new number.

Hey this is NO B.S...Jay Glazer was on "The Herd" a few hours ago saying the Patriots may be after Steve Smith! listen to the podcast or the replay on ESPN radio!

I hope for Steve's sake he gets out of here. On the field he has never been an issue, and he deserves to be on a team that has plans on actually winning a game. There should be zero doubt in a real fans mind what Jerry has planned for us at this point. He is cleaning off the payroll, and preparing to sell. I say GREAT!!! Maybe now an owner will step up and give a watchable product to us great fans of the area. GOOD RIDDANCE JERRY RICHARDSON!!!

Steve Smith isn't going anywhere. Especially not for a freaking 3rd rounder like the Pats just got for Moss. If he does get traded for that crap amount Marty Hurney should be shot. Whenever teams make a trade they have to take into account what they will be getting in return. Steve is under contract for another 3 or 4 years here. That makes him more valuable than Moss because he was in the last year of his deal. The Patriots got what they could for Moss. The Panthers look a lot better next year with Steve Smith and A.J. Green/Julio Jones than they do with Brandon lafell & A.J. Green/Julio Jones.

There is no way they cut Smith loose. No way. Besides the Patriots are loaded at WR - that is why they let Moss go.

I'll bet all the money I'll ever make for the rest of my life that Richardson has no plans whatsoever to sell this team. Ever.

Couldnt have said it better myself. I was just thinking either of those guys would be friggin' awesome in a Panthers uni. If we could pick up Lee Evans for a 5th or 6th rounder.....I will be salivating.

Anyone who says JR is cutting payroll to sell the team is an idiot. Our payroll this year is much closer to the middle than it is to the bottom of NFL teams. This year we cut dead cap weight in a non cap year (pretty smart) and went with a young core that went out last year 3-1. JR has never shown to be cheap when it comes to signing players.

Honestly at this point, let the rookies play. Part of what hurt Jarrett (other than the fact he's a drunk) was that he didn't get enough time on the field. This season is over, let the guys get as much experience with Clausen throwing to them and get ready for next season. If there is a next season of course.

Who said JR was selling the team? Show me a link? But I hope he does sell the team so the new owner can move the team to LA.
To get away from the whine and cheese fans in general. At least in LA, fan can embrace having a team down there. Without the bitching and moaning all the time.
Btw not a Panthers fan, but this is perhaps the worst fanbase in the league.
How about some of these ppl buy or apply for the GM job?

We could trade SS to NE for our 2nd round pick in next year's draft.
Posted by: DooWayne | Oct 6, 2010 2:25:38 PM
No, the Patriots traded Moss because he stated it was his last season with the Pats after the Bengals gam.
Not being given a contract extension also got into a confrontation with Bill B after the Dolphins game.
Wes W as the #1, Brandon T as the #2, and Juilan L as the slot isn't a threat to opposing defenses.
But they do have 2 stud TEnds, they will have to replace him by committed

here's an idea!!! let's not trade anybody.....people need to calm the hell down. a) the panthers aern't going anywhere b) as much as i hate mark smith he's kinda right, everyone of you so called panthers fans are crying like little babies and are threatening to sell your psl's...seriously go ahead sell your psl's have fun watching the panthers on tv the rest of your life. it's one down year chill the hell out, we're young, we're going to have growing pains...stop acting like the sky is falling and the world is ending

Wow the Patriots aren't going to give up a 2nd round pick for Smith. Thats stupid for them to do.
Btw do anybody know how picks they will have next year? I know they will have 2 3rd round picks( 1 compensatory for losing Peppers in FA).
Posted by: adam carter | Oct 6, 2010 2:33:22 PM
Rounds 1-4 the Pats have 2 picks each!!! They know how to collect draft picks don't they?
Posted by: Rawjem | Oct 6, 2010 2:53:54 PM
Draft pick are good and all, but they can be a hit or miss as well. Not only but also be a primadonna of wanting alot more money that they deserve or be like Jarrett or any othe felony players.
Posted by: mark smith | Oct 6, 2010 3:03:36 PM
Hey mark smith, why don't you move to LA?
Posted by: djfoams | Oct 6, 2010 3:47:29 PM
I got it...pretty damn funny man!!!
Posted by: Tommygunz | Oct 6, 2010 3:51:08 PM
Mark Smith...why isn't there a team in LA already? The Raiders moved there, and then moved back. The Rams left and went to St. Louis. So I ask you why? I'll tell you why.
LA refuses to build a new stadium; the city is just as broke as the state. There isn't a team in the NFL that will every move to LA until they build a stadium. What team would ever want to play in the LA Coliseum?
That's why the Rams left; Al Davis thought he could convince the city to build one after the Rams left because they would want football back--they didn't, so Davis left and took the Raiders back to Oakland.
Face it, LA is a dead stick until a stadium is built; there aren't any current owners in this economic climate that will shell out their own money for a stadium.

People need to quit saying the what hurt Jarrett was a lack of playing time. I think it's pretty apparent now that there was something else was going on behind the scenes...
Posted by: Scott | Oct 6, 2010 5:47:28 PM
Lmao Im not from NC buddy, but thanks fo asking though.
Well you sum it up by your team not moving to LA, how about Nebraska lol? just joking.

I really dont like the fact that Clowney is wearing # 87 that is mooses number. That needs to be changed
Posted by: Scotty | Oct 6, 2010 10:34:36 PM
Hopefully Clowney isn't a clown and knows not to drink and drive. I'd prefer that he had a different number instead of 87... If he wears it, he better live up to it!
Posted by: PantherDave | Oct 6, 2010 11:18:39 PM
I'd like to know how many other fan bases aren't b1tching and moaning? Are the Panthers really the only ones? Of course not. If you want to be sad, go find a Bills fan.
